Jazz, Drink and Bootleggers: America in the twenties

Human life in this world has seen many transitions. These transitions have occurred in every age, in every age. However, the latter transitions, which occur in the twenty-first are never impressed me. The twentieth century was a little better, but not the best. The nineties saw some positive developments, but obviously had to be from the twenties, which I feel every individual of the current era would like to live in. Oh, there are few of that period; who are still alive, and most of them are in their late nineties or hundreds. Still, their memories are so sharp, after all everyone could forget the days of the golden age of America.

The Prelude 1918 – 1923

The period of progress and transition referenced to as the "Roaring Twenties" or the "Jazz Age" had its origin in the optimistic and progressive thinking of a new generation of Americans who have emerged from the hardships of the First World War. The Treaty of Versailles of 1919 had destroyed the power of the enemy they had so completely so that Americans feel safer feared. Due thereof, the economy rose to new heights. Their purchasing power had increased dramatically and she spent lavishly on pleasure and dress. This phase of the progress was as old as the passage of the Volstead Act on January 29, 1920 banning the sale of all shapes made of alcohol, illegal. This led to the birth of a thriving bootlegging business whose masters smuggled in alcoholic beverages from Canada. For this reason, the period from 1920 and ending with 1933, when prohibition was introduced by an amendment to an end, is also known as the "Prohibition".

Another important invention embodied American thought and culture during the year 1920 the Colt Thomson sub-machine gun which the inventor General John T. Thomson one version to the public in 1919. This gun, popularly known as the "Tommy gun" was the most lethal weapons ever handled by the American public and soon found favor with the managers of the bootlegging business, who used them to force some of the most gruesome murders ever committed.

The Golden Age 1923 – 1929

Prosperity and development in America was at its peak between 1923 and 1929. Cars were the most appropriate way of transportation. Ford, Dodge Brothers, Packard, Haynes and Winton were some of the top car manufacturers. Lavish lifestyle, expensive vacations, expensive jewelry, the tendency of time.

The year 1923 which saw the death of U.S. President Warren Harding, the emergence of a hitherto unknown thug named Alphonse Capone or saw Al Capone in the distant city of Chicago. Capone quickly rose in the ranks of organized crime, eventually moving his boss Johnny Torrio and grabbed control of the crime syndicates throughout the United States. popularly known as "Scarface" Capone was the most feared gangster of Chicago virtually eliminated the time and until the early 1930s with his money and muscle power (at one time, he even had a Chicago Mayor William "Hale" Thomson, popularly known as "Big Bill" in his wages). This period is remembered in Chicago for current wars, night clubs where illegal liquor was served and jazz music, rampant corruption in the administration and the police and the gruesome civil murders and police encounters that took place.

Costume

A typical man of the year 1920 wore a shirt made of cotton or silk and suspenders. Men who belong to the rapidly growing American middle class wore their coats unbuttoned shirts and a jacket on top of their jackets. Not infrequently, ties or bow ties replaced buttoned jackets. Hats, eyeglasses and walking sticks were the fashion of the time and were even used by men not bald or blind or crippled. Sunglasses were sported by movie stars.

For women in fashion skirts decreased in size over time. It was a clear Notwithstanding the conservatism of the Victorian era. A typical woman of the period bopped her hair and wore short skirts and high makeup was known as a "flap".

Jazz Music

Jazz originated in New Orleans in the early 1900 as a fusion of Afro-American, Jewish, Italian and European post-Victorian styles. However, most jazz music flourished during the 1920s supported by the active support of the Mafia Dons like Al Capone, who roped in jazz stars to play in their clubs. Louis Armstrong, perhaps one of the greatest exponents of jazz, performed during this period. The fast-paced jazz rendition appeared more glamorous and attractive to the critical and unorthodox American public than the slow-tempo classics of the 18th century European musicians. Jazz marked the transition from waltzes and sonatas by Mozart and Beethoven to pop and rock music of our time.

Movies

The year 1920 saw the transition from monochrome to color and silent to the talkies. The film production company, during the early 1900s, was the domain of adventurous couple, grew manifold during the year 1920. Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, Greta Garbo, John Gielgud, John Barrymore, Charlie Chaplin, Spencer Tracy and Bob Hope are among the stars whose careers flourished in the 1920s. Comedian Bob Hope deceased in 2003 at age 100, once recounted his experience nerve cracking run for Al Capone. The toll of the sea, the first film in Technicolor Type 2 was produced in 1922. The Jazz Singer (1927) was the first talkie while The Viking (1927) was the first film shot in Technicolor type 3. At the show in 1929 was the first talkie produced in Technicolor. After these firsts, there were so many movies filmed in Technicolor, it was estimated that color would be black and white films completely replaced by the year 1930. This was not to be as the Great Depression and Hollywood beaten back to black to cut down on production costs.

Walter Elias Disney released his first Mickey Mouse animated movie in 1928. This was a milestone in the history of motion pictures. In the coming years, many cartoons were made, mostly by Disney, but some also by Metro Goldwyn Mayer and Paramount. Most of these early cartoons were filmed in Technicolor.

Sports

The year 1920 saw impressive achievements in various sports and track and field events of the time. Baseball legend Babe Ruth was at its peak in the early 1920s. He put towering records have stood for decades. Finland Paavo Nurmi's record for long distance running (1,500 m). Charles Lindbergh made the first nonstop transatlantic flight in 1927 and became a celebrity in his time. But celebrity status did prove to be a curse for Charles Lindbergh when his son was kidnapped for ransom in 1932 and later murdered.

The Wall Street Crash and the last phase 1929 – 1933

On October 24, 1929, famous in history as "Black Thursday" the Wall Street crash. The prices of the shares quickly fell back to the U.S. economy. It spells the demise of millions of Americans and beaten down the Great Depression. Millions were left unemployed and destitute. However, the Roaring Twenties did well until 1933, when half brought ruin to decline.

The impact of the Great Depression was widespread. Production of expensive color film were stopped. Car companies were filled with unsold cars. There were workers' movements in the U.S.. Elsewhere, Communism was always touted as the best alternative to the capitalist system of economy that prevailed in the U.S.. United Kingdom, another country that was hit hard by the Great Depression. The government of British India dramatically increased the price of salt and other commodities have led to widespread famine. These events indirectly led to MK Gandhi's Dandi March. In Burma, there were nationalist movements calling for the separation of the colony of Burma from British India and for the expulsion of extortionary Chettiar moneylenders from India.

The strength of the Labor Party increased variety in Britain. A series of round table conferences were held to chart a solution to the Indian question. There was general disappointment in all developed countries with the existing capitalist system of economy.

On February 14, 1929, assassins from Al Capone's outfit in disguise as police "raids" a palisade of illegal liquor belonging to a rival gangster "Bugs" Moran. Assuming them to be police officers, seven members of Moran's outfit their back to the "officers" and stood with their arms held in the air. Immediately the police "opened machine gun fire killing seven of them on the spot. Forensic evidence showed that the seven victims were almost cut in two by machine gun fire. The "police" later led some men to the car and left. This act called for widespread public condemnation and outrage. A newspaper Al Capone branded as "public enemy number one". The expensive and luxurious lifestyle of the gangsters, while the rest of the American people suffered in poverty at the height of the Great Depression called the wrath of the public. Al Capone, however, had escaped again for lack of evidence, but was arrested in 1932 on charges of tax evasion. He was convicted and sentenced to a term of eleven years the longest jail term ever awarded for tax evasion. Al Capone, but not served his full term. He was released after six and half years because of good behavior. However, by the time he was released from prison, his crime empire was liquidated. Thus ended the career of a the most dangerous criminals of the twentieth century.

Legacy

The year 1920 characterized the interwar mentality of America. It was the transition from the Industrial Revolution to the age of computers. Most of the gadgets that we come into our lives today as vacuum cleaners, refrigerators, fluorescent lighting, lawn movers, televisions, washing machines and elevators gained widespread acceptance during this period. There was also an increase in the popularity of theme parks and rides. A number of groundbreaking discoveries were made during this period. John Logie Baird invented the television in 1927, Alexander Fleming invented penicillin in 1928. Zippo, The first modern cigarette lighter was invented in 1932.

The year 1920 witnessed a spurt in demand for cars that were available at a much cheaper prices. The horseless carriages of the early 1900s with their heavy and expensive brass fittings and headlights were shunned for more compact, fashionable and cheap cars. Ford told its Model A in 1927. This was perhaps the first car that targeted the lower middle class American people.

By the early 1930s, roads were extended to cover the whole of America. This gradually threw railways of business. The sustainability of vintage-era cars created long distances easily and comfortably.

This period also witnessed many political changes. Imperialism was widely condemned and human rights and values respected. Monarchism was avoided in favor of democracy. Apparently there were many movements for democracy around the world. There was an amazing amount of racial equality in America, where African-American African-American artists and culture were held in high esteem for the first time, despite the ultra-racist Ku Klux Klan was at the height of his popularity in this period. Almost all popular jazz musicians of the period were African-American ethnicity and extravagant amounts received as salary. In Europe, the period saw the rise of right-wing movements such as Fascism in Italy and Nazism in Germany. In India, the Montagu-Chelmsford reforms adopted in 1919. Under the provisions of these acts, free and fair elections held for the first time in Madras province. The League was founded in 1919 to mediate in disputes between different countries in the world. Dramatic growth in transport and communications facilitated globalization and inter-cultural dialogue.

The year 1920 will be viewed by some as a dark age where there is widespread degeneration and immorality. For some it was a Golden Age when one could aim for the sun and the stars and still get them. America was at the height of its prosperity. Monarchs had lost much of their power and influence over the world as the general tendency of popular thought was in favor of democracy only to be replaced by movie stars, smugglers, inventors and entrepreneurs who lived in royal splendor. However, we never chose to ignore the twenties, as the twenties made the America we know today. This was probably the period when the United States surpassed the UK in the quest for leadership among the nations of the world. Above all, the year 1920 more than any other period in U.S. history, illustrated the great "American Dream".

"The poorhouse is vanishing from our midst. We have not yet reached the goal, but a opportunity to go forward with the policies of the last eight years, we will soon … in the sight of the day when poverty is eradicated from this nation …. When the war ended was the most vital of all problems, both in our own country and around the world was whether governments should their war experiences and many resources remain the property of production and distribution. We were challenged by a peacetime choice between the American system of rugged individualism and a European philosophy of diametrically opposed doctrines – doctrines of paternalism and state socialism. The acceptance of these ideas would have meant the destruction of self-government through centralization of government. It would have meant undermining individual initiative and enterprise which our people have grown to unprecedented greatness. By adhering to the principles of decentralized self-government, equal opportunities, and freedom of the individual, our American experiment in human welfare has led to an unprecedented degree of welfare in the world. It has come closer to elimination of poverty, the elimination of the fear of failure than mankind has ever achieved. Progress of the past seven years is the proof. This alone provides the answer to our opponents, who ask us to introduce the destructive elements in the system by which this is accomplished. "

-Herbert Hoover, President of the United States of America, 1929 to 1933.

I am trying to trace information about a Doll Maker?

I had several dolls in the late 80's / early 90's and I have no idea how to locate. It was an American doll maker, and I had 4, Jane Eyre (in a wedding dress), Princess and the Pea (came with multicolored satin mattresses and a bag of peas), The Small Mermaid (not the Disney one! She was in a blue dress, with a net and shells) and a doll named "Jenny" that was in a blue dress with a pink apron. I know this one total shot in the dark, and no, they were not made by M. Alexander.
