Anna Akhmatova

Early Life

Anna Akhmatova in 1914

Akhmatova was born in Bolshoy Fontan in Odessa Andrey Antonovich Gorenko and Inna Erazmovna Stogova. Her childhood seems not have been happy, her parents were divorced in 1905. She was educated at Tsarskoe Selo (Where she first met her future husband, Nikolay Gumilyov) and in Kiev. Anna began writing at age 11, inspired by her favorite poets: Racine, Pushkin, and Baratynsky. If her father did not want verses printed under his "respectable" name to see that they chose the surname of her grandmother Tatar as a pseudonym. Many of the male Russian poets of the time declared their love for Akhmatova, back and forth to the attention of Osip Mandelstam, whose wife, Nadezhda Mandelstam, would eventually forgive Akhmatova in her memoir, Hope Against Hope.

In 1910 she married the poet Nikolay Gumilyov, very soon left her for lion hunting in Africa, the battlefields of World War I, and the society of the Parisian gris convenience. Her husband does not take her poems seriously, and was shocked when Alexander Blok explained to him that he had preferred his poems. Their son, Lev, born in 1912, was a famous neo-historian Eurasianist become.

Silver Age

Anna Akhmatova and her husband and son Nikolay Gumilev, Lev Gumilev, 1914

Published in 1912 her first collection, entitled evening. It contained short, psychologically taut pieces which English readers can find distance, reminiscent of Robert Browning and Thomas Hardy. They were praised for their classical diction, telling details, and deft use of color.

By the time her second collection, the rosary, appeared in 1914, there were thousands of women composing poems in honor of Akhmatova. " Her early poems usually picture a man and a woman involved in the most moving, ambiguous moment of their relationship. Such pieces were often imitated and parodied by Nabokov and others later. Akhmatova was prompted to exclaim: "I learned how our women to speak, but they still do not know how. "

Together with her husband, Akhmatova enjoyed a high reputation in the circle of poets Acmeist. Her aristocratic manners and artistic integrity won her the title "Queen of the Neva" and "Soul of the Silver Age," as the period became known to stand in the history of Russian poetry. Many decades later, she would have this blessed time of her life in the longest of her works to remember, "Poem without a hero (194,065), inspired by Pushkin's Eugene Onegin.

Saint Anne Mosaic, Marian Year 1954, by Boris Anreep

Mosaics in Ireland and England

After the breakup of her marriage, Akhmatova had an affair with mosaic artist and Boris Anreep poet (1883 – 1969) during the First World War, at least 34 of her poems are about him. He in turn created mosaics in which they function. The Cathedral Christ the King Mullingar, Anreep mosaic of Saint Anne is spelled Anna. Moreover, the sacred image bears an uncanny resemblance to that of Akhmatova in her mid-20s.

Akhmatova Anreep Also shown in a mosaic entitled Compassion, located in the National Gallery in London.

The accursed years

Nikolay Gumilyov was prosecuted in 1921 and subsequently executed for activities such as anti-Soviet, Akhmatova, then married a prominent Assyriologist Shilejko Vladimir; at the same time she began business with the composer Arthur Louri, which many of her poems put to music, and theater director Mikhail Zimmerman. She then married an art scholar, Nikolay Punin, who died in the Stalinist Gulag camps. After that they ignored several proposals of the married poet Boris Pasternak.

After 1922, Akhmatova was condemned as a bourgeois element [citation needed] and rarely published between 1923 and 1930. She earned her living by translating and publishing essays Leopardi, including a number of brilliant essays on Pushkin, in scientific journals. All her friends either emigrated or were ousted.

Only a few people in the West suspected that she was alive when she came out with a new collection of poems in 1940. During World War II, when she's nightmare the 900-day siege witness, her patriotic poems found their way onto the front pages of Pravda. After Akhmatova returned to Leningrad after the Central Asian evacuation 1944, she was distressed by "a horrible ghost that pretended my city."

In learning about the visit of Isaiah Berlin to Akhmatova in 1946, Stalin's associate in charge of culture, Andrei Zhdanov, publicly labeled her "half whore, half non ', had forbidden her poems from publication in the journals Zvezda and Leningrad. Her son spent his childhood in Stalinist gulags, and they even resorted to publishing several poems in honor Stalin for his release. Their relations remained tense, however.

Although officially smothered, Akhmatova's work remained circulate in samizdat form and even by word of mouth, as she became a symbol of oppressed Russian heritage.

The thaw

After Stalin's death, Akhmatova's superiority was among Russian poets grudgingly acknowledged even by party officials, and a censored edition of her work was published strikingly absent Requiem, which Isaiah Berlin had predicted in 1946 would never be published in the Soviet Union. Her later pieces, composed in verse and neoclassical mood, seems she has the voice of many survivable. Her dacha in Komarovo was visited by Joseph Brodsky and other young poets, who continued the traditions of Akhmatova St. Petersburg poetry in the 21st century.

In honor of its 75th anniversary in 1964, celebrations were held and new collections of her verses were published.

Akhmatova was a chance for some of its pre-revolutionary acquaintances to meet in 1965, when she was allowed to travel to Sicily and England, with a view to Taormina prize and an honorary doctorate from Oxford University to receive (she was accompanied by her lifelong friend and secretary Lydia Chukovskaya). In 1962, her dacha visited by Robert Frost. In 1968 a two volume collection of Akhmatova's poetry and prose published by Inter-Language Literary Associates of West Germany.

Monument to Anna Akhmatova in St. Petersburg near Kresty Prison

Akhmatova was deceased on the age of 76 in Moscow. She was buried on Cemetery Komarovo.

Akhmatova's reputation continued to grow after her death, and it was in the year of her centenary that one of the greatest monuments of 20th century poetry, Akhmatova's Requiem, was eventually published in her homeland.

There is a museum dedicated to Akhmatova in the apartment where she lived with Nikolai Punin the garden wing of the Fountain House (better known as the Sheremetev Palace) on the Fontanka Embankment, where Akhmatova from the middle of 1920 to 1952 lived.

A minor planet discovered by Akhmatova 3067 Soviet astronomers and Lyudmila Karachkina Lyudmila Zhuravlyova in 1982 was named after her.

Examples of Poetry

Grey-Eyed King (1910)

Hail to thee, O inconsolate pain!

Gray eyes, the young king is slain yesterday.

That autumn evening was stuffy and red.

My husband, returning, had quietly said,

"He had left for his hunting, they carried him home;

They found him under the dome of the old oak.

I feel sorry for his queen. He, so young, died! …

And at night all her black hair turned gray. "

He took his pipe from the fireplace shelf

And went into the night, the work itself.

So now my daughter I will wake up and –

And I will look in her little gray eyes …

And rustling poplars outside will be heard:

Your king is no longer here on this earth.

Song of the latest meeting (1911)

My chest grew helplessly cold, but my feet were light and agile, I drew a glove on my right hand, the One that was meant for my left.

It seemed the steps were many, but I knew – there were only three! Amid maple, autumn whisper PLED softly: "That to me!

My fate as capricious and evil is coldly betrayed me again. 'I replied, "My darling, Mine will die too.I my love with you "

The song of the last meeting. I glanced at the dark home. In the bedroom With a burning candled the indifferent, yellowish glow.

My Way (1940)

It is in simple ways,

One in a circle roams:

Waiting for a girl from his past,

Means to return home.

Nd downs but I'm going there

By a road or straight, nor broad,

But never and nowhere,

As the railway trains ff.

Courage (1942)

We know that vibrates on the scale,

And what we must steel ourselves to face.

The bravest store hours on our clocks:

must have the courage not abandon us!

Allow use bullets to kill not afraid,

nor are we bitter, although our roof fall.

We will keep thee, speak Russian,

servitude of foreign chains,

keep you alive, great Russian word

suited to the songs of our children's children,

pure on their tongues, and free.
