ADHD: an overview
ADHD is neither a "new" mental health problem, nor is it a disorder arising in the context of personal gain or financial gain by the pharmaceutical companies, mental health, or the media. It is a very real behavioral and medical conditions that affect millions of people nationwide. According to the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), ADHD is one of the most common mental disorders in children and adolescents. According to research sponsored by NIMH, estimated the number of children with ADHD to be between 3% – 5% of the population NIMH also estimates that 4.1 percent of adults have ADHD ..
Although it has taken quite some time for our society to accept ADHD as a bona fide mental health and / or medical condition, in reality it is a problem that is known in modern literature at least 200 years. Already in 1798, ADHD was first described in medical literature by Dr. Alexander Crichton, who he described as "spiritual restlessness." A fairy tale with an apparent ADHD youth, "The Story of Fidgety Philip," was written in 1845 by Dr. Heinrich Hoffman. In 1922 was recognized as ADHD Post encephalitic behavior disorder. In 1937 was found to stimulant help control hyperactivity in children. In 1957, methylphenidate (Ritalin) was commercially available for treating hyperactive children.
The formal acceptance and mental health / behavioral diagnosis of ADHD is relatively recent. In the early 1960s, ADHD was called "Minimal Brain Dysfunction." In 1968, the disorder became known as "Hyperkinetic. Reaction of Childhood" At this point the emphasis placed on hyperactivity than inattention symptoms in 1980 was the diagnosis changed. "ADD – Attention Deficit Disorder, with or without hyperactivity," equal emphasis on hyperactivity and attention problems. In 1987 the disorder was renamed Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and was divided into four categories (see below). Since ADHD is considered a medical disorder leading to behavioral problems.
Currently, ADHD is defined by the DSM-IV-TR (the generally accepted diagnostic manual) as a disorder that is divided into four categories:
1. ADHD, primarily inattentive type – formerly known as ADD – is characterized by impaired attention and concentration.
2. ADHD predominantly hyperactive, impulsive
Type – formerly known as ADHD – is characterized by hyperactivity without inattentiveness.
3 ADHD, combined type. – The most common type –
includes all the symptoms: inattention, hyperactivity and impulsivity.
4. ADHD not otherwise specified. This category
for ADHD conditions that prominent symptoms of inattention or
hyperactivity-impulsivity, but not meet the DSM-IV-TR criteria for a
diagnosis.
To further understand ADHD and its four sub-categories can be helpful for hyperactivity, impulsiveness and / or inattentive to illustrate through examples.
Typical symptoms are hyperactive in childhood:
• Often "on the go" or pretend "driven by a motor"
• feel restless feel
• Moving hands or feet or squirming nervously
• Get up frequently to walk or running around
• Running or climbing excessively when inappropriate
• Difficulty playing quietly or engaging in quiet leisure
• talk much or too fast
• Often leave my seat during the stay expected
• Can often be involved in social activities still
Typical symptoms of impulsiveness in childhood are:
• Acting lightly or suddenly, without thinking first
• blurting out answers before questions have been asked to complete
• After a difficult time in anticipation of a turn
• Often interrupting others' conversations or activities
• Poor decision or decisions in social situations, leading to the child is not accepted by his / her own peer group.
Typical symptoms of inattention in childhood are:
• No attention to details or makes careless mistakes
• Has trouble staying focused and easily distracted
• Appearing not to listen when spoken
• Often forgetful in daily activities
• Having trouble staying organized, planning ahead, projects and finishing
• lost or homework, books, toys or other objects
• Not seem to listen when spoken directly
• Failure to follow instructions and not to activities, homework completion,
chores or tasks at work
• Avoidance or dislike of tasks that require sustained mental effort or
concentration
Of the four subcategories of ADHD, hyperactive-impulsive type is the most distinct, recognizable, and the easiest to diagnose the hyperactive and impulsive symptoms are disturbed behavior reflected in the different environments in which a child responds.: ie, home, friends, school, and / or during extracurricular activities or sports. By the hyperactive and impulsive characteristics of this subcategory, those children naturally arouse attention (often negative) from people around them. Compared with children without ADHD, they are harder to instruct, teach, coach, and with whom to communicate. Addition They are sensitive to disturbing, seemingly oppositional, reckless, accident prone, and socially underdeveloped.
Parents of ADHD youth often report frustration, anger and emotional exhaustion caused by inattention to their child, impulsivity and hyperactivity. By the time they receive professional services many parents of children with ADHD to describe the complex feelings of anger, fear, despair and guilt. Their multiple "errors" in trying to get their children to concentrate, focus, and to persevere with directions, responsibilities and duties have led to feelings of hopelessness and despair. These parents often report feeling guilty about their resentment, loss of patience, discipline and reactive style. Both psychiatrists and psychotherapists have worked with parents of ADHD youths who "joke" by saying "if someone does not help my child, give me some medication! "
The following statistics (Dr. Russell Barkley and Dr. Tim Willens) illustrate the far-reaching consequences of ADHD in childhood.
• ADHD is a youth rate of occurrence of 6-8%, with the disease continue
in adolescence for 75% of patients and 50% of cases continued to
adulthood.
• Boys are diagnosed with ADHD 3 times more often than girls.
• Emotional development in children with ADHD is 30% slower than their non-ADHD peers.
• 65% of children with ADHD exhibit problems in defiance or problems with authority figures. This can include verbal hostility and temper tantrums.
• Adolescents with ADHD are nearly four times as many traffic citations as non ADD / ADHD drivers. They have four times as many car accidents and are seven times more likely to crash half.
• 21% of teens with ADHD skip school regularly, and 35% drop out of school before the end of high school.
• 45% of children with ADHD are suspended from school at least once.
• 30% of children with ADHD have repeated one year of school.
• Youth are treated with a medication six times less likely to developing alcohol and drug abuse disorder through adolescence.
• The juvenile court judicial system is composed of 75% of children with undiagnosed learning disabilities, including ADHD.
ADHD is a genetically transmitted disease. Research funded by the National Institute for Medical Health (NIMH) and the U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) have shown a clear evidence that ADHD runs in families. According to a recent survey, over 25% of first degree relatives of the families of children with ADHD ADHD too. Other research shows that 80% of adults with ADHD have at least one child with ADHD and 52% two or more children with ADHD. The genetic link of ADHD has important implications treatment because other children in a family may also have ADHD. Moreover, there is a possibility that the parents may be ADHD. Obviously, matters are complicated when parents get with undiagnosed ADHD problems with their child to have ADHD. It is therefore crucial to evaluate a family occurrence of ADHD in the assessment of ADHD in childhood.
Diagnosing Inattentive type of Attention Deficit Disorder in youth is not an easy task. More harm than good is done when a person is wrongly diagnosed. Misdiagnosis may lead to unnecessary treatment, ie, a prescription medication for ADHD and / or unnecessary psychological, behavioral and / or educational services. Unnecessary treatment such as ADHD medications can be emotionally and physically harmful. Conversely, if an individual is the correct diagnosis and subsequently treated for ADHD, the potential for dramatic changes in life are endless.
Psychologists, clinical social workers, Licensed clinical professional counselors, neurologists, psychiatrists and paediatricians / General Practitioners, the diagnosis ADHD. Only doctors (MD or DO), nurse practitioners and physician assistants (PA) under the supervision of a physician can prescribe medication. However, psychiatrists, because of their training and expertise in mental disorders, are best qualified to prescribe ADHD medication.
While the ADHD Hyperactive Type youth readily observed with ADHD inattentive type are sensitive to misdiagnosed or, worse yet, not even noticed. Moreover, ADHD, attention deficit type people are often mislabeled, misunderstood and even the debt of a disease over which they have no control. Because ADHD inattentive type manifests more internal and less behaviorally disturbed, these young people are not often reported by potential practitioners. Therefore, these youngsters often do not potentially life threatening improvement of the treatment, ie, psychotherapy, school counseling / coaching, educational services, and / or medical / psychiatric services. Unfortunately, many "falling between the cracks" of social services, mental health, juvenile justice, and educational systems.
Youth with unrecognized and untreated ADHD may develop into adults with poor body image concepts low self esteem, associated emotional, educational and employment problems. According to reliable statistics, adults with unrecognized and / or untreated ADHD are more prone to alcohol and drug problems to develop. It is common for adolescents and adults with ADHD to try to calm or "self medicate" yourself using addictive substances such as alcohol, marijuana, narcotics, sedatives, nicotine, cocaine and illegal prescription or street amphetamines (stimulants).
There is no "cure" for ADHD. Children with the disorder rarely outgrow is.
Approximately 60% of those signs as an ADHD child, the symptoms as adults. And only 1 in 4 adults with ADHD was diagnosed in childhood and even fewer are treated. Thanks to increased awareness and the pharmaceutical companies' marketing of their drugs, more adults are seeking help for ADHD. However, many of these adults were not treated as children, carry emotional, educational, personal, and occupational "scars." As children, these people did not feel "like smart, successful and / or sympathetic" as their non ADHD counterparts. With no one to explain why they struggled at home with friends and at school, she naturally turned inward to explain their shortcomings. Eventually, they internalize the negative messages about themselves, thus reducing opportunities for success as adults.
As with adolescents, adults with ADHD have serious problems with concentration or attention, or overactive (hyperactive) in one or more areas of life. Some of the most common problems are:
• Problems with a job or career, lose or quit jobs frequently
• Problems as well as you would at work or school
• Problems with the day-to-day tasks such as housework, paying bills, and organizing things
• Problems with relationships, because you forget important things, can not finish tasks, or upset about little things
• Constant stress and worry because you do not meet targets and responsibilities
• Ongoing, strong feelings of frustration, guilt, or guilt
According to research on adult ADHD:
• ADHD affects be 30% of people who have ADHD in childhood.
• ADHD do not develop into adulthood. Only those who have the disorder since early childhood lot of trouble ADHD.
• An important criterion of ADHD in adults is "disinhibition" – the inability to stop acting impulsively. Hyperactivity is much less likely a symptom of the disorder in adulthood.
• Adults with ADHD tend to forget appointments and are often socially
inappropriate – making rude or offensive remarks – and disorganized.
• They find the front too difficult.
• Adults with ADHD find it difficult to form lasting relationships.
• Adults with ADHD have problems with short-term memory.
• Almost all people with ADHD suffer from other psychological problems, particularly depression and substance abuse.
Although there is no consensus about the cause of ADHD, there is a general agreement in the medical and mental health communities is biological in nature. Some common explanations for ADHD include: chemical imbalance in the brains, power shortages, said the head trauma / head injury, or obstacles to the normal development of the brains (Ie the use of cigarettes and alcohol during pregnancy). ADHD can also be caused by malfunctioning of the brains or neurological damage. dysfunction the areas in the frontal lobes, basal ganglia and cerebellum can affect regulation of behavior, inhibition, short-term memory, planning, self-monitoring, verbal regulation, motor control and emotional regulation.
As a successful treatment of this disorder can have significant positive emotional, social and family outcomes, an accurate diagnosis is extremely important to diagnose ADHD Requirements include:. education (and postgraduate), further training, guidance, experience and licenses. Even with the essential professional skills, cooperation and input from current or former psychotherapists, parents, teachers, staff, physicians and / or psychiatrists leads to more reliable and accurate diagnosis. The value of cooperation should not be underestimated.
Sound ethical practice is forcing doctors to the least restrictive and least risky form of therapy / treatment for youth with ADHD. Psycho-therapeutic medication or intensive services should be provided if the customer did not respond positively to less invasive treatments. It is therefore crucial to determine whether "disability" or not present. Clients who are functionally impaired in their environment will not be successful without specialized assistance, services and / or psycho-therapeutic or medical treatment. Once disability is established, it is the responsibility of the treatment team to work together in the most effective method of treatment.
Too often a person wrongly diagnosed with ADHD, not due to attention deficit issues, but rather because of their unique personality, learning style, emotional makeup, energy and activity, and other psychosocial factors that better explain their problematic behavior. A misdiagnosis can also be linked to other mental or emotional conditions (discussed next), a condition of life including a parent, unemployment, divorce, family dysfunction, or medical conditions. In a small but significant number of cases the diagnosis of ADHD is more an adult must be a challenging, stubborn and unruly child, even with these problems may have ADHD Manage.
It is crucial that before an ADHD diagnosis is reached (in particular before medication is prescribed), a doctor may consider if other coexisting mental or medical conditions may be responsible for the hyperactive, impulsive, and / or inattentive symptoms. Because other conditions share similar symptoms with ADHD, the necessary to the likelihood that a mental / psychological disorder to consider on that of another that may be associated with the symptoms of a customer. For example, generalized anxiety disorder the proportion of depression and symptoms of disorganization, lack of concentration, and the work completed issues. ADHD is a trained and qualified specialist will consider differential diagnoses in order to achieve the most logical and sound clinical diagnosis. Typical problems to be excluded are:. generalized anxiety disorder, depression, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, and substance abuse disorders also have medical certificates to be found in the same way: sleep disorders, nutritional deficiencies, hearing impairment, and others.
When a non-formal doctor diagnoses a patient with ADHD, that is a licensed psychotherapist, it is recommended that a second opinion (or confirmatory diagnosis) are sought from a psychiatrist. Psychiatrists are physicians who specialize in the medical side of mental disorders. Psychiatrists are able to medications that may be necessary to prescribe to treat ADHD. In partnership, parents, school staff, the referring psychiatrist and psychotherapist, will monitor the effectiveness of the medical component of treatment of ADHD.
In short, ADHD is a mental health and medical condition that is becoming more accepted and therefore more efficient. treated to high professional assessment, diagnosis, treatment and education to achieve, it is important that trained and qualified practitioners understand multi-dimensional aspects of ADHD: history, diagnosis, statistics, etiology and treatment. Education, experience, a keen interest in details, a solid base of information, and a system of cooperation creates the potential for positive results in the treatment of ADHD.

You have some really good boys names. I like almost all of them, but my favorites would be: Zachary Adam Ezra Alexander James Marshall In order of favorites to less. But these are my top three from the list. I'm more picky with girls names in general, but I think Brooke Victoria Lilly A few of your girls names that sound like a description, honest. Mila Summer Willow "= a kind of tree, flowering in summer. "Violet Skye" = a sunset. "Autumn Maria" I do not know, but This makes me think of leaves. Or a wood nymph. I love Wendy and Kimberly, but the names do not really blend that well together, since both end in y. Since I already have on your list to see Brooke, I'd suggest Wendy Brooke. It has a bit of a more classic look than your other names. Jessica I can see with your assembly name as well, I'm not sure how you want it. Jessica Kimberly is a nice name, I think.
