Weave through good-natured hipster kitsch and endearingly goofy girl power, director Drew Barrymore's roller derby dramedy, "Whip It" is a gas. In her feature film debut contact sports, Barrymore hams it up as an injury-prone skater "Smashley Simpson," but pays equal attention to all players in a vibrant femme-centered ensemble led by Ellen Page – which, as blooming wallflower Bliss Cavender (aka "Babe Ruthless"), finally has a role to match her star turn in "Juno." Young women will roll in the aisles, and generally zippy BO prospects look for Fox Searchlight's October 2 release, in particular the decrease of track on full display with heavier opponents.
Faithful adaptation of her novel "Derby Girl" screenwriter Shauna Cross follows the basic rules of the coming-of-age film, such as punk-spirited Texas teen Bliss (Page) yearns to distinguish themselves from old-school mom and dad (Marcia Gay Harden and Daniel Stern) who have registered with it cheesy, "Little Miss Sunshine"-style beauty contests. When bespectacled Bliss, a waitress in a small town BBQ joint, happens on the rough and tumble world of roller derby women, the discovery not only frees her, but the film, which also finds her true calling in and around the track.
Hiding her age to try out for the Hurl Scouts, Bliss shows surprising speed even in her old Barbie skates and landing a coveted spot on the team, pushing, despite an initial reluctance and push the competitors – the raison d'être sport, with especially honking fans.
Although Barrymore is not much interest in mapping the spatial complexity of roller derby action, her recordings of the games – equal parts stupidity and violence – much visceral for these purposes. What distinguishes "Whip It" by the sports pack is the movie director's sharp focus on the details of the team camaraderie, as Bliss teaches body-check opponents and is gradually accepted by her older Hurl Scouts – tough-as-nails chicks with self-styled army green getups and names like "Maggie Mayhem" (Kristen Wiig) and "Bloody Holly" (Zoe Bell, "Death Proof").
As coach of her team, Barrymore has assembled a crew game of alt-movie All-Stars, including dp Robert Yeoman ("Rushmore"), editor Dylan Tichenor ("Magnolia") and ubiquitous music supervisor Randall Poster, the soundtrack, ranging from the Ramones to the Breeders corresponds to the fast-moving hit for hit. Kevin Kavanaugh's production design captures working class Texas beautiful, and Catherine Marie Thomas 'costumes – especially the skaters' outfits, helmet nets – are a hoot.
If "Whip It" seems to pushing her luck with a nearly two hour running time, it's a forgivable offense under Barrymore's palpable desire to make the relationships to solve not only happy, but credible. Until the climactic championship game (clumsily held on the night of Mom's beloved Blue Bonnet parade), the film's last third a wide range long two-handers between Bliss and various intimates: harassing her rival (a rad Juliette Lewis), her fave team mate / confidante (Wiig), her overbearing mother, cheerleading her father, her jealous best friend (Alia Shawkat) and her cute, but unreliable beau (Landon Pigg). Remarkably, none of this dialogue heavy scenes takes the easy way out.
Course material credit for winning ways the film belongs to Page, whose performance – complete with its own skates – is one of grit, grace and speed. Acting much less stubborn than she did in "Juno" and "Hard Candy", the young thesp takes a bright and welcome return to realism here while the hot heels whimsical tone that the film defining quality goals.
As if the emotional content of a food fight Hurl Scouts were not surprising enough, the credits' use of clichéd comedy bloopers feels downright poignant, as "Whip It" reluctantly take leave of her lovably butt-kicking heroines – in least until the sequel.

I use to love playing with Barbie dolls, it was my favorite thing to do. I use to pretend that Barbie was a sex slave and for her and her friends to get out they would perform sexual acts on Ken: DI also use Barbie always in bad situations were Ken would always save her. I miss playing with barbies. I played with barbies until fourth grade.
