Martial Arts Are Useful?
People sometimes ask me, upon learning that I am an advanced degree in martial arts are, "have you ever used it. "I do not have an exciting story to tell about how I bested a bunch of thugs in a dark alley somewhere, somehow, on one day. It never happened, and do not that will ever happen, not now and never, I guess.
When an early student of the martial arts often feels 'hard' and may even have a little swagger. Sometimes even hoped for a meeting where skills … happy to demonstrate that rarely happens to everyone, including the student. As studies progress, skills to increase confidence level builds, there is less of a need or desire to show and more of a feeling that "if I had I could."
After a time, and I am now a third degree black belt, and if lucky might have the right teachers and other studies as well, there is no need to prove himself and radiates an aura or a presence that is visible to others which were brought in.
But back to that question "Have you ever used your martial arts training." Well, yes, there was a time, but it was not really a fight, but it did, I think, to save someone's life. Here's what happened.
It was a few years ago on a Friday just after work in New York City, subway, steaming, on the platform at 42nd St. go uptown. I was waiting for my train someone came in, packed solid. The doors open and no one on the platform moved because it was hopeless to get into … except one man. Who knows what his story was, why was he so desperate to get on, or foolish, it seems, but he threw himself on the solid mass of humanity in an attempt to board the train. Happened that the person he hit was a long, broad young man in his late years '20, Who, I would say, not friendly to the thrown. He shouted "Get out! There is no space. "
Because of the way the self-pitcher a good foot shorter and a good 20 or 30 years older. But that did not stop him from making a new attempt to get, unfortunately in the same place and at the same long, strong looking young man. This time his efforts were greeted with abuse of power and really angry look. Now at this point, would anyone with half a brain take the next train. What happened next almost the cost of this unfortunate guy his entire brain.
Yes he did! He tried a third time to get in, pushing at the same furious sportsman. What happened next was unpleasant but predictable. The young man exploded off the train, the smaller, foolish, older man for him and scream at the top of his lungs, "I'll murder you!" (I can not say what he said in print and I think the same rules on the Internet, right? But you get the idea.) Reiterated that the same string of epithets rising again intensity as he beat the poor, stupid, unhappy on the ground with a flurry of kicks and blows.
In less than two seconds, the older man was on the ground with the young man continues to batter him with devastating consequences. Here was the situation: The older man was on the ground with his head bounced between the steel column and the concrete platform. I gave him about five second to damage the brains and perhaps ten seconds no brains at all.
I considered my options. No one else on the platform, of course, made a move. On that moment of my perception of others, I noticed a clear distinction between men and women. The men were nervous gaze away or pushing their nose in a book or newspaper if they would eat. The women, on the other hand, were watching in shock and horror, unable to tear their eyes away. Remembering later I thought, well, the guys are probably ashamed, think they have something but afraid to do something, while the women, knowing that they are not expecting anything, just could allow themselves to their feelings of fear, compassion, horror etc.
Here's what I did. I jumped on the young man and pushed him hard in the chest, screaming at the same time, "Stop it, you go to kill him and a policeman sitting there!" He stopped kicking, I had actually pushed him a few meters away from the sensitive figure of the battered, bleeding older man and he stood motionless for a moment staring at me. Now this guy had about 30 or 40 pounds on me and it was not fat either, and I was twice his age. On the other hand, I could tell by the way he was flailing away with his hands and feet that he was not a trained martial arts practitioner.
Here's what went through my head at that time. I thought I could handle what may happen because of my martial arts training, but I did not think I would have something to process and you'll see why. What I did and the reason why I did it was to him a instant to take over its reasoning his animal instinct.
In more technical psychological terms, what happened to him was that he was hijacked by his amygdala. The amygdala is a small part of the brains that is a "lifesaver" from primitive times. This is the part of the brains that springs into action immediately to save lives when a rock falls from the top of your cave or a saber-toothed tiger jumps on you. It is no time for rational thought. The higher thinking areas of the brains, the cortex, and so has no time to act. The amygdala and the adrenaline pumps immediately places us in a defensive / offensive / flight mode you instant life saving action is necessary.
Now, with less saber-toothed tigers to jump us, the amygdala still "hijacks" the higher thought processes. Only now can be for a number of reasons which are certainly not directly related to our immediate survival. For example, can trigger these events range from cut off by another car in traffic (the famous "road rage") to a number of clumsy person spills something on us. The reaction the same instant unreasoning, towering rage. We have all seen a thousand times and usually the best thing to do is to stay in the background until it works itself out.
On that hot Friday on the New York subway platform, the young man was pushed by the rather foolish fellow fighting to get into the crowded train and probably did not want anyone Death did not hurt anyone, but he could not help himself. But he did a bit of help, and that's what I gave him an instant I gave him back to his higher reasoning functions in the action and overruling the lower part of his primitive brains that was telling him "kill, kill, kill."
I guess you're wondering what happened next, he redirect his anger to me? He returned to kick the fellow on the ground, by this time, had crawled to the other side of the pillar? Has the "policeman" do anything to anyone?
Well, for starters, there was no "police". There was a man in a uniform, a sort of underground station attendant, and he did not want to get to all concerned – it was not his job. He became edges away from the whole scene. And then, in a moment, another train pulled into the station and we all stormed it, including the angry young man continued, shouting in lower and lower pitches, the same set of expletives.
We were a foot or so apart that the uptown train for the few minutes until I get off at my stop. He never even looked at me. I did not exist as far as he was involved. Part of him, I'm sure, was glad that I existed and had saved him from doing something he undoubtedly would have regretted for a long time. There is one thing, however, I am sure about and that is, if I or anyone else, had not stepped forward in those few seconds, there would be another of those little articles in the Daily News the next day a fight and a senseless murder in the subway.
So, I guess my martial arts training to use, because I'd been afraid to bang that big, powerful and very angry looking man in the chest at that moment if I'm not quite sure and confident that I could do anything he chose to try to do to treat me. But that's just a graphic and somewhat dramatic construction. I think many days and in many ways, I 'use' my martial arts training because I feel the peace of mind and confidence knowing that nothing to fear.

How do I write letters of the alphabet, as they are written on country style arts and crafts?
I have searched my heart on the internet trying to find a font that matches the letters I've seen about the arts and crafts. Little evidence that the cute, curvy writting with the dots on the ends of the letters have. It's so hard to explain, but it is a kind of primitive writing countrymen. This is the type of individual letters you would on country style wall hangings to see the 'primitive' looking for dolls, sand, stars, etc. Anyone know where I can find samples of this writing, so I can learn to do it myself?
I know exactly what you mean …. I use that technique when I scrapbook. Basically, you just write your regular letter, either all uppercase or lowercase or both, and make dots at the end of each point. This is all I could find on the net … hope that helps. Make sure the arrow down the page a bit, look for "Dot letters".
