Happy Birthday, Barbie. Go away now!
Yesterday was the 50th anniversary of Barbie. A celebration of a half century of the obsession of young girls with a pencil-thin, wasp-waisted, pointy-breasted doll. It is estimated that over 1 billion Barbie dolls have been sold worldwide in over 150 countries since the doll was first introduced in 1959.
Mattel, Barbie manufacturer, claiming three Barbies are sold every second.
In her 50 years on the planet, Barbie has received 100 different careers, had more than 40 pets, including cats, dogs, horses, a panda, a lion cub and a zebra and 73 acres of clothing, furniture and other equipment and Assessories.
Barbie was primarily a fashion statement (still is, mostly), but the feminist movement, she had become a career woman. Arts, cowgirl, astronaut, soldier, politician are just a few. In 1994 the Winter Sport Barbie was introduced with skis, poles, and of course, dressed in designer skiwear. In 1998 NASCAR Barbie started race cars, followed by FIFA World Cup WNBA Barbie and Barbie. Ultimate female soccer player Mia Hamm was selected as the Soccer Barbie. It was a momentary trend.
Yet for a while it looked like Barbie would find the strength to real women, rather than keeping the number she was unnatural (mature), born 50 years ago … 5-m-11 long, 18 inch waist and 33 inch hips. Mattel Barbie as renewed in 1974, she was a little wider waist, but she still has the legs to here.
Child experts have labeled the Barbie doll as a bad influence on young girls. They say they fall in (or maybe leads) the stereotype of the skinny-is-beautiful ideal that is on a gullible public dictated by fashion designers, the media and Madison Avenue. Adverts for just about everything-from clothing to cars to cosmetics function reed-like, sunken cheeks Waifs.
But instead of indignant rebel or exuberant laugh at this utter nonsense, many girls and women be excluded if they are far from ideal. Some see themselves as too fat Barbie dolls. They look in the mirror and what they see as a trick mirror … inaccurate and biased. This distortion can lead to dissatisfaction and eating disorders.
Women participating in sports or other physically active are less likely to buy the hype. They see their bodies in healthy ways. Their mirror reveals curves and muscles, broad shoulders and a straight, a body-proud attitude willing to work hard and play.
Where are physically active, seeking dolls that girls can emulate? Dolls with skates, bicycles and water skies. They can be an ensemble of fashionable sports outfits, hair can be braided into a ponytail or pulled or combed out before the party after the game and come up with tennis rackets, volleyball and hockey sticks. Other Assessories perhaps headbands, sports sox and ace bandages.
Barbie up to form, fill and close the softball team, maybe they should be kicked off the playing field. Happy Birthday, Barbie. Now, go away.
