Kings Dominion is an amusement park located in Doswell, Virginia in Hanover County, 23 miles (37 km) north of Richmond and 83 miles (134 km) south of Washington, DC on Interstate 95.
The 400-acre (1.6 km2) park is currently in owned by Cedar Fair Entertainment Company, and was part of the former Paramount Parks chain that Cedar Fair acquired from CBS Corporation on June 30, 2006. The park is named after her sister Park Kings Island in Kings Mills, Ohio, which opened in 1972. Both parks were originally built and owned by Kings Entertainment Company aka KECO. While Kings Island was mentioned as a combination of Kings Mills (the location) and Coney Island (the theme park that was built to replace), Kings Dominion name was more than likely a reference to Virginia's nickname as the "Old Dominion".

Early history as Kings Dominion (1975-1989)
The entrance of the park as seen from the observation deck of the replica Eiffel Tower
Kings Dominion officially opened in 1975 with 15 rides. However, in 1974, the park had a "soft" (Partial, low key) opening only for the now defunct Lion Country Safari attraction and a junior roller coaster, now called Scooby Doo's Ghoster Coaster. Also in 1974, had Rebel Yell complete the park racing coaster (designed by John Allen of the Philadelphia Toboggan Company), but it would not open until 1975 with the rest of the park. When the park debuted in the spring of 1975, but also a Log Flume, antique cars, steam trains and a collection of flat rides. Another roller coaster, Galaxie, was located in the Grove next to the man-made Lake Charles, which took up 10 acres (40,000 m2) building of the park. In addition, Kings Dominion 1:3 replica of the Eiffel Tower, an observation deck from which visitors could see the entire park features, the park was open by first full operational year. In addition to the Lion Country Safari, the original theme of the park were named The Happy Land of Hanna-Barbera, Old Virginia, and Coney Island (renamed Candy Apple Grove prior to the next season).
Kings Dominion added their fourth roller coaster, a Schwarzkopf shuttle loop known as the King Cobra in 1977. The King Kobra was characterized by a 50-ton counterweight drop off and the park was first launched roller coaster. The was in the park for nine seasons before being moved to Jolly Roger Amusement Park in Ocean City, Maryland. After several relocations, it continues now as scatters working at Hopi Hari in Brazil. Also in 1977, Kings Dominion was one of the various theme parks, used as sets for the film Rollercoaster.
In addition to the King Kobra, Kings Dominion opened a campsite Lost World and its famous mountain for the end of the year 1970. Originally, the Lost World featured three rides: a flume ride called Journey to Atlantis, a children's attraction known as Land of Dooz, a rotor and called Time Shaft. Journey to Atlantis was replaced by the River Haunted themed flume ride in 1980. Kings Dominion would add their second wooden roller coaster, the Grizzly in the woods of the Old Virginia section of the park in 1982. Kings Dominion opened its rapids ride, White Water Canyon, in Old Virginia in 1983. In 1983, a Deceased 13-year-old boy while riding on the roller coaster, Galaxie. A swinging, inverting pirate ship known as the Berserker was added on the next International Street Theatre Festival years. In 1984, riding a Smurf, Smurf Mountain would take the place of my ride in the Lost World. From that moment, the Lost World was known as Smurf Mountain. The mountain was rebuilt in 1997 and exclusively occupied by Volcano: The Blast Coaster since 1998.
The replica Eiffel Tower at Kings Dominion
After three seasons without a new coaster, Kings Dominion unveiled its TOGO stand-up roller coaster, Shockwave, in 1986, the same year that the park removed King Cobra. Shockwave, like King Cobra, has a loop, but also a helix. (The same King Cobra roller coaster at Kings Island, which was a stand-up coaster similar to Shockwave, closed in 2002.) The third and last roller coaster Kings Dominion added during the year 1980 was Avalanche, which remains the only Mack bobsled coaster in the United States. The trains of the Avalanche are named after the United States, France, Germany, Canada and Switzerland bobsled, so riders in different trains can simulate in a bobsled race at the Olympic Winter Games.
Although the Lion Country Safari attraction was the first part of the park opened, was phased out after Paramount bought the park. Many of the Lion Country Safari occupied the land behind the Anaconda roller coaster, Kings Dominion still owns the land, but has used most of it mainly for storage instead of opening new attractions. Diamond Falls, another flume ride, premiered in 1985 until its closure in 2002. Three sets of slides slides Rivers Racing premiered in 1987 and remained open until the early 1990s.
Early 1990s/transition to Paramount Property
Kings Dominion continued adding new areas to the park in the early to mid 1990. In 1990 they extended Hanna-Barbera Land to include more attractions for children. The 1991 season saw the addition of their next big roller coaster, the Arrow looper Anaconda, which is also the world's first coaster with an underwater tunnel mode. (The tunnel was under a section of Lake Charles.) Anaconda was originally announced as well with six loops and stays that way will be charged. However, unlike Drachen Fire, a six-inversion Arrow looper which was released on Busch Gardens Williamsburg the following year, the Anaconda has only four inversions: a vertical loop, a sidewinder, and two consecutive corkscrews.
Kings Dominion opened her as Hurricane Reef water park in 1992. In the inaugural season for the first time recommended the Monsoon Chutes (two pairs free fall body slides, 70 and 50 feet (15 meters) high, respectively), The Severe Twist (two enclosed body slides that wrapped around each other), the Pipeline (four open body slides), Cyclone (three enclosed body slides, the center and that was a free fall), Tidal Wave (two open slides, which riders rode on inner tubes, Splash Island (a children's area with five slides), and a lazy river. to build the water park, Kings Dominion completed two thirds of Lake Charles closest to the Candy Apple Grove area of the park, the Anaconda continued to have the rest of the more.
Paramount's Kings Dominion (1993-2006)
Kings Dominion Theatre (named "The Paramount Theatre" in the Paramount Parks era)
Kings Dominion logo used from 1993 – 2002 At the Paramount Years (a revision was used from 2003-06)
Kings Dominion continued its growth when it became part of Paramount Parks in 1993 and switched its name to Paramount's Kings Dominion. New attractions and areas of the theme park Paramount's television shows and movies released by Paramount's Kings Dominion almost every season that they were under Paramount's ownership. In 1993, they added a motion simulator attraction, originally in the movie Days of Thunder, and Lion Safari County was removed at the end of the season. The 1994 season saw the addition of a new theme park, part of the 1992 Paramount film Wayne's World, their third full-size wooden coaster, The Hurler recommended a store called the Rock Shop, Stan Mikita and a restaurant similar to the featured in Wayne's World. Since then, Wayne's world Share incorporated into the Candy Apple Grove (since renamed the Grove), Stan Mikita was converted to the Happy Days Cafe, and Hurler not Wayne's World theming, except sprayed a couple of "Wayne's World" logo at the exit of the ride. In the coming years, another area for children, also known as Nickelodeon Splat City, opened near the Shockwave roller coaster. This was later transformed into Nick Central. Smurf Mountain was also removed in 1995, leaving a dormant fiber mountain in the back of the park.
In 1996, Paramount's Kings Dominion introduced its second launch coaster, and the first LIM-launched roller coaster, The Outer Limits: Flight of Fear. The Outer Limits had a 56 miles (90 km) per hour to start, four inversions, and an identical "spaghetti bowl" layout to the ride of the same name in Kings Island. Almost as remarkable as the launch of The Outer Limits was the fact that the whole trip was in the twilight, the riders could not see where they went. (Six Flags America, a nearby park in Maryland, has a other "spaghetti bowl" roller coaster with the same layout as Flight of Fear, better known as The Joker's Jinx. Joker's Jinx, however, is an outdoor coaster) Five years after The Outer Limits opened, Paramount Parks' license agreement to use discussion of the TV show that a train was called expired. The Outer Limits-related themes in the ride and the queue is removed, and the ride was renamed Flight of Fear.
1997 featured the debut of Kidzville, a re-theming of the Hanna-Barbera section. Added the new coaster Taxi Jam and Scooby's park's design theme was a box called Kidz Construction Company. Yogi's Cave was rethemed to Treasure Cave and filled scrappy with other theming rides. Many rides Kidzville like Scooby Doo's Ghoster Coaster, George Jetson's Spaceport, and Huck's Hot Rods were the names of The Hanna-Barbera characters wearing.
Paramount's Kings Dominion continued what became a trend of adding coasters launched in 1998, when she Volcano, The Blast Coaster opened in former Lost World mountain. Previous rounds of the mountain were all removed several years before, and Volcano gave the mountain a major transformation. Volcano, which was manufactured by Intamin AG, was the world's first LIM-launched inverted roller coaster. The ride featured two distinct parts to launch an Immelmann loop style from the top of the mountain, center line and three reels on the way back down. (Huge explosions of fire shot out. The top of the hill for extra effect) was Volcano theme of Paramount's 1997 film Volcano, the other Paramount Parks added or suspended upside down roller coasters theme from Top Gun about the same time. During the next two seasons, Paramount's Kings Dominion Hurricane Reef extended behind the Rebel Yell and renamed the water company. (Most of the original Hurricane Reef remain open from 2006, the two regions connected by a path In the Rebel Yell) The new part of Waterworks includes Pipeline Peak, a set of four enclosed water slides, one (the Night Slider) is. World's tallest free dark fall slide. In 2000, Nick Central opened on what was Nick Splat City and part of Kidzville.
The park added its third launched roller coaster, Hypersonic XLC, in 2001. Hypersonic XLC, a Thrust Air 2000 air-launched coaster made by S & S Power, launch riders from 0 to 80 miles (130 km) per hour in 1.5 seconds, allowing them a 87-degree slope and a 87-degree drop. The whole trip takes about 25 seconds. Hypersonic XLC broke frequently and was closed for the first three months of his second season, no other Paramount Parks installed a similar ride. Nevertheless, helped establish Hypersonic XLC Paramount's Kings Dominion's reputation as "the launched coaster capital of the world". Hypersonic XLC was removed after the 2007 season.
The early 2000s saw Paramount's Kings Dominion opened new attractions similar to existing rides in other Paramount Parks. In 2002, the park opened its new wild mouse coaster, Ricochet. Carowinds Ricochet also installed them in 2002. Diamond Falls, the giant flume ride at Paramount's Kings Dominion, also closed that season, leading to several years of speculation about which of park visitors ride would take his place. The 2003 season saw the Kings Dominion has become final several of the Paramount Parks opened a Drop Zone Stunt Tower. The Drop Zone at Paramount's Kings Dominion, at 305 feet (93 meters) high, was the highest free fall ride in the world when opened. In 2004, Paramount's Kings Dominion added Scooby-Doo! and the Haunted Mansion, like Scooby Doo-themed dark rides had opened three other Paramount Parks in the previous three seasons. In the next year, Paramount's Kings Dominion added an inverted top spin 'Tomb Raider: Firefall, which was a outdoor version of a similar ride called Tomb Raider: The Ride at Paramount's Kings Island. The differences between the two that were at Kings Dominion riders feet hanging freely and Kings Island is a floor. In the 2006 season, Paramount's Kings Dominion opened the Italian Job Turbo Coaster, its fourth launched coaster. Unlike the earlier built launched coasters at Paramount's Kings Dominion, each of which was faster than its predecessor, the Italian Job Turbo Coaster is designed more as a family car and has various launches at 40 miles (64 km) per hour. Renamed the Backlot Stunt Coaster in 2008, the ride is similar to the Backlot Stunt Coaster rides at Kings Island and Canada's Wonderland, which both opened in 2005.
Cedar Fair era (2006-present)
Logo used briefly in 2007 after moving from Paramount Parks. It is still used and signage in the park on the site.
Control of the Paramount Parks had been transferred from CBS Corporation, Viacom at the beginning of the 2006 season, the parks themselves were on sale offered since the last off season. A number of controversial moves by CBS Paramount's Kings Dominion made during the 2006 season. First, a roller coaster based on The Italian Job had advertised on television as being open at the beginning of 2006, the park season, which is not actually open until late May, almost two months into the season. The placement the ride was rather dubious, some enthusiasts ridiculous the park management to place the entrance of The Italian Job, which was inspired by a street to hunt in the middle of the African-themed park near the Congo section of the Anaconda roller coaster. Second, visitors to the park during the 2006 season showed that trees in the queue of the Grizzly were felled to make way for a new surcharge go-kart attraction called Thunder Raceway. Third, Paramount's Kings Dominion closed Flight of Fear. Paramount's Kings Dominion gave no indication in the previous season, which would be closed Flight of Fear in 2006. Rumours had suggested that it would be moved to another former Paramount Park since Cedar Fair acquired Paramount's Kings Dominion, the park worked to regain the ride can be operated. Flight of Fear reopened on August 18, ending speculation of move the ride and / or sales.

Kings Dominion WaterWorks expanded for the 2007 season, adding a second wave pool called Tidal Wave Bay, a family of four person raft slide called Zoom Flume, and a Tornado ProSlide.
In December 2006, Kings Dominion's Hypersonic XLC also put up for sale. The park announced plans to keep it running until a buyer was found. From the end of the 2009 season, it is not sold. It remained in force during the 2007 season and was closed and dismantled a few weeks before the season 2008 began. Also during the 2007-2008 offseason, Cedar Fair renamed the park the last two rounds to open Paramount theming. The Italian Job: Turbo Coaster was Backlot Stunt Coaster, and Tomb Raider: Firefall was called The Crypt. The Paramount Theatre also changed its name to King's Dominion Theatre.
The seasons 2008 and 2009 saw Kings Dominion gets three runs, which had operated at its Geauga Lake amusement park's last dry season. It is scheduled for the start of the 2010 season. Also for the 2010 season, the Universe and Nickelodeon Kidzville parts of the park rethemed to Planet Snoopy, just like the children's areas in Canada Wonderland and Kings Island. Volcano, The Blast Coaster (opened 1998), the second of Kings Dominion LIM-launched roller coasters, is also the fastest roller coaster park (after removing Hypersonic XLC). The ride in the former mountain "Lost World" is remarkable for two launches, the first 70 mph (110 kph).
Flight of Fear (opened 1996 as The Outer Limits: Flight of Fear) is one of the first two LIM-launched roller coasters in the world, along with the Flight of Fear at Kings Island, with which it shares the same layout and theming. It's an indoor roller coaster in complete darkness, a theme to Area 51 military-style installation. It was renamed in 2001 when Paramount lost the right to Outer Limits. In 2001, the over-the-shoulder belts were replaced with lap bar restraints After five seasons of guests complaining about a rough ride experience.
Intimidator 305 (under construction, scheduled for April 2010) is the second giga coaster in North America (third in the world), After Millennium Force in Cedar Point. The ride, named and themed after the late NASCAR driver Dale Earnhardt Sr., who sits on land originally used for the Lion Country Safari has passed since the unused Safari closed in the early 1990s. Using a similar cable car system hill Millennium Force, Intimidator 305 has 305 riders before they set foot on a 85-degree, 300-foot first drop to drop. The amount corresponds to the total amount of Drop Tower: Scream Zone and the first drop is equal to the first drop of Millennium Force. It will be the steepest drop-to-date on a giga coaster. The drive maximum speed of 92 miles per hour was the fastest ever achieved by a drive located at Kings Dominion, and the fifth fastest roller coaster in North America.
WaterWorks
WaterWorks, Kings Dominion water park, can be thought of in terms of the two sides, North Side, formerly known as Hurricane Reef, which is the newer and Southside portion of waterworks. The WaterWorks rides that had as Hurricane Reef in the mid-year 1990 are in the front of the Rebel Yell roller coaster, the newer attractions are behind the Rebel Yell and are accessible by walking under the Rebel Yell on a walkway between Baja bends and shoot the curl. The original Hurricane Reef attractions at Kings Dominion received new names renamed to the WaterWorks water park in 1999.
Lazy Rider (opened 1992 as the Lazy River) is a lazy river that travels around the center of the water park. With the exception of freestylin ' all other slides that originally opened by Hurricane Reef travel over Lazy Rider, which makes the lazy river a few short tunnels in the classroom. From 2005, the Lazy Rider's entrance and exit located on different parts of the river, riders kept making more than one round without having to leave.
Baja Bends (open in 1992 as Pipeline) is a set of four green open water slides located behind the Lazy Rider and in front of Lake Charles. Baja Bends Slides ride over Lazy Rider and end with a landing pool.
Spiral Chute (opened in 1992 as Severe Twist) is a pair of enclosed slides that wrap around each other in a spiral manner. The queue for Spiral Anaconda runs under chute, charging for the slides was built over the lake. Spiral Chute was closed for part of 2005 as a construction road for the Backlot Stunt Coaster was cut from its queue, making the drive inaccessible. The slides reopened in 2006, but Spiral Chute was not open for the 2009 season, due to structural deficiencies structure of the platform, and now state, but not active.
Shoot the Curl (opened in 1992 as Cyclone) is a set of three enclosed blue slide is in front the Rebel Yell, the slides travel over the Lazy Rider. The center slide is a free fall slide, but not as big as Night Slider Pipeline Peak. The other two slides each mirror and feature 360-degree helixes.
Freestylin '(Opened in 1992 as Tidal Wave) is a pair of white open slides, which riders on a person inner tubes; the slides end in a landing pool. Because the riders each have their own tubes, the ride has two separate loading stations on connected towers, and the queue, as a queue begins, divided into two parts of the way up.
Big Wave Bay (opened 1999), the first park wave pool has 650,000 liters of water, wave machines generate its four-foot waves.
Surf City Splash House (opened 1999) is a multi-level water play structure with several smaller slides and a 800-gallon bucket that dumps all its water on guests every few minutes.
Lil 'Barefoot Beach (opened 1999) is a small water play structure for young children.
Pipeline Peak (opened 2000), the park's largest slide structure in 2006, is a set of four enclosed slides manufactured by ProSlide. The highest level of the tower features two body styles flumes: Night Slider, which at 77 feet (23 m) high, is the world's longest free fall dark slide, and Power Plunge, a long, winding slide that is 77 feet (23 meters) high at the beginning. Turbo Twister Slide and Rip, who his 50-foot (15 m) of the tower lower level, two-person raft slides open in several places in the middle of their natural spray water on riders.
Tidal Wave Bay (opened 2007), the park is the second wave. Several other Cedar Fair parks are multiple wave pools. Dorney Park was half wave pool in 2006, California's Great America will open their second wave in 2007, and Michigan's Adventure has three wave pools of varying sizes and depths.
Tornado (opened 2007) is a 65-meter high slide that deposits riders into a large funnel. ProSlide Tornadoes have opened in many Six Flags parks and various other Cedar Fair parks in the early year 2000, Kings Dominion is the second former Paramount Park received a tornado.
Zoom Flume (opened 2007) is a four-person family raft slide.
