Huckabee bill raking over the coals
Ben Nelson must have felt like a punching bag.
The Democrat was the center of attention at a rally in downtown Omaha on Sunday – and a lot of attention was unfavorable, as opponents of health care legislation in Congress expressed outrage with its decision to the crucial 60th vote market in favor of the Senate bill.
About 1,800 people attended the rally, whose theme was the 2008 Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee. The crowd in the Civic Auditorium was revved up, call Nelson a "traitor" and a "sale" and booed when his name was mentioned.
Huckabee urged people, when they go to the polls, the names of politicians who voted for bill.If remember a congressman stood proud and strong, to reward them with reelection, Huckabee said. "If they do not bring them home."
Some Republicans say that Nelson's support of the health care bill would be political Waterloo if he decides to run for reelection in 2012. They call it a "death knell" to his career.
But supporters point out that the following Senate elections in the state of Nebraska is three years away, and by then the health care bill may not be the hot potato it is today. Issues come and issues go, for example, the economy overshadowed the war in Iraq at the start of the 2008 presidential race.
Moreover, Nelson will certainly support a democratic basis that has long wanted a health care overhaul.
"Ben has done so many things for the people of this state. I'd be surprised if a single problem to be addressed would outcome of an election to change, "said Anne Boyle, former president of the Nebraska Democratic Party." I'm sure he would win again if he decided to walk again. "
A Democrat who already agreed with Nelson's shoes Boyle.
Former Senator Bob Kerrey drew a lot of heat in 1993 when He voted for the budget cut package then-President Bill Clinton, which included an array of tax increases.
Kerrey was also the swing vote. And, like Nelson, Kerrey drew national attention when in public anxiety about whether to vote for the bill.
One month after the vote, Kerrey returned to the state and was confronted with angry Nebraskans. But one year later, in his reelection bid, he defeated the Republican by 10 percentage points in January Stoney.
Kerrey said Sunday that he believes the Republicans will try to make health care a problem in 2012 as Nelson running for reelection. But then, Kerrey said voters may see the benefits of the bill – Or at least more comfortable with the legislation.
"I do not think this will damage or political career, Senator Nelson haunt him if he runs in 2012," Kerrey said. "Faced with the many challenges presented health state and the nation, I'd rather defend an" aye "vote is a 'no'."
The people at the rally expressed deep disappointment with Nelson, especially, abortion compromise and agreement with the Senate leadership to secure full federal funding for an extended Nebraska's Medicaid coverage, while other countries.
Opponents of the decision of Nelson said the compromise represents a purchase.
Republican George Skidmore, 52, an accountant, said he voted for Nelson in the last election, but will never do it again.
"It feels as if one took bribes for his vote, "said Skidmore.
Nelson said he had proposed the bill a number of Medicaid assistance to all states, but the Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada to Nebraska-specific language included.
Several GOP state senators and other elected officials attended the Sunday rally. Pete Ricketts, who Nelson challenged for his Senate seat in 2006, also present.
Many in the audience said she feared the bill would lead to increasing debt and a government takeover of healthcare.
They carried signs stating "Give Ben the boat." A person came in a pickup with what looked like a cardboard house in the back. It read: "Nelsonville Housing. This is your home after health care. "
People at the rally signed petitions urging Nelson to reconsider its support for the bill.
The precipitation Nelson's decision was not limited to the rally.
Nebraska Governor Dave Heineman criticized Republican Nelson on Sunday to accept the Medicaid deal.
"Nebraskans not ask for a special deal, but a fair deal," said Heineman.
Nelson has also drawn anger from Nebraska Right to Life and Nebraska Catholic Conference because of the abortion compromise.
Huckabee told the crowd at the rally that he thinks the bill was an attack on civil liberties. He especially resistance against a measure in the bill that would require all Americans to buy health insurance or face a fine or a penalty.
"What happened to freedom in this country where we have our own choices? "He asked.
Huckabee said in an interview before the rally that he thinks health care costs can be reduced if more emphasis on prevention. Incentives can be designed to bring people to their weight, exercise and smoking cessation watch.
During his presidential campaign, Huckabee also supports the idea that Americans should be responsible for buying their own insurance rather than rely on their employers.
If people bought their own insurance, they could keep if they found another job, he said.
Huckabee also claimed that it is not a good system when someone buys a product for another person. Americans can improve health care consumers as they shopped on the open market for their own insurance, he said.
"If you pay for it, you a much better understanding of what you are going to get. "
