Death of Fourah Bay College Student Highlights Student Deep Crisis
For a university that is one of the proudest symbol of Sierra Leone, Fourah Bay College (FBC) has not only become an icon, but more importantly the institution is seen by many as the only hope for a better career in life. It is the dream of thousands to get admission to FBC, hundreds have come from abroad to acquire educational laurels sub-Saharan Africa's oldest university. So it was definitely a matter of public interest when things started getting terrible in an institution known for its variety of social clubs, fraternities and sororities.
Orientation Experience
Life on campus FBC was certainly dominated by the social clubs, said Mabinty Koroma, who graduated in 2004, "I can remember since our first orientation and experience on my first few days on campus, there were so many clubs that I noticed, majority of them were going around asking me to be a part of their union, but I was determined because of the advice of my mother not to invite. But for me I enjoyed every moment of it – although I was not a member of one of these clubs, it was interesting to see how polarized and the diversity of styles, colors and ideas each image, "said Mabinty." I thought it was something attractive to my roommate was severely beaten with scars all over her body. I could not forget that night – I was scared and has even tried to call her mother, but she warned me and begged me not to. I had the runs for her to do what medication to buy. For three days she stayed inside and could not attend classes. She later revealed to me that during her introduction, she seriously addressed because her first attempt at a rival club. "
"You know what?" Mabinty said her friend kept her pace and ended as a leading figure in her club and despite her with a good job now, she still occasionally visits her former club initiation ceremony.
Top of Fray
The history of FBC dating clubs in a long time ago, but one of the earliest known clubs to emphasize was the first student association – the gardeners. The association was established to the benefit of the entire student population to find was the only body that was to articulate the aspiration of student politics. As time went on, this body began to confrontations with the college and some of the students they represent are. The gardeners were banned following the strike that led to the burning vehicle of the then principal CP Foray part of the university building. Later the Gardeners into a different group called the Auradicals. The formation of this group coincided with later another group in the early 90s called the General formed to also seek the interest of certain section of students. These two groups known today as the 'White' and 'Black' (General and Auradicals respectively), the interesting thing about social clubs at FBC is that they are polarized in one of the above two political divide.
Diffusion Polarization
Also because of the great influence of FBC on the other tertiary institutions throughout the country, the same system spread rapidly in these institutions, with other institutions from Milton Margai College of Education MMCE at Njala University (NUC) with the same clubs or similar names not only share the same ideology, but regular meetings and organize social events.
Over the years, social clubs and political groups on campus was so fashionable that they are an integral part of university life. They were more advanced and their club regalia and clothing were the most colorful times, often depicted youthful pop culture with some of the more prosperous members of the clubs show their asset as flamboyant cars, et al, the status of the clubs to show they belong.
Fashionable trends and Lure
Variety of events from elegant to lavish receptions to fashion shows and elsewhere that somewhere Lagoonda attracts renowned alumni were in possession of some of these clubs. The most striking feature of these clubs is that while they strive to manifest their physical and social skills, they were also like to portray their academic excellence. Some clubs will boast most of the time they have a history of production of his brightest students. According to Yusuf cobba was He persuaded the Liberals to join because he was convinced that he stood a chance academically if he joined.
Martin Koroma another former student of FBC said that as much as he respect a long time for clubs like Quimanora had – he was convinced to join, because he noticed that the "best" girls on the campus were popular with boys of the club. A current student of Steven FBC Mannah said that because he was in high school, he had an admiration for Auradicals was because his older brother, who was a principal member had inspired him. A current student who identified himself only as Patrick said he was attracted to clubs because of a feeling of insecurity. "If the age of 18 years just coming from school I felt that the accession will protect me, because I had no confidence in the university environment and the time seemed so strange to me, "said Patrick.
According to Alhassan Jalloh, a former FBC student who graduated in the early '90s and now based in the United States, except the power struggle that existed or the very few cases of verbal and physical confrontations during his time at FBC. The level of violence it is a totally new phenomenon – "We had started a little bit physically, but not in this way today, "he said. Alhassan whose cousin was recently a victim of the club introduction said that when he returned from the U.S. as a former member he things very differently than the way it used to be found. "I was shocked to see the new regime in place, which to me looked like s ***," he current scene debt as a result of post-war mentality and deep rivalries that existed on campus.
Yet Alhassan called for clubs on campus to act in a proper way that will once again win the appeal of the members of the public.
Psychological Malaise and Drug Abuse
Dr. Edward Nahim, a Sierra Leonean consultant Psychiatrist violence is defined as: "The infliction of physical or psychological harm to an individual for him or her feel sever pain or discomfort. "
He noted that although student violence is not new, the war and drugs have accelerated the act of violence among students to new levels.
He pointed that the main reason for students embarking on violence drug abuse, noting that drug use is on FBC universities and other tertiary openly.
"I talked a lot about drug use in universities in the country at large but unfortunately people never understood what I said," Dr.. Nahim stated. He added that the a general process that occurs during drug abuse club initiation ceremonies, which resulted in sadistic rituals, and the serious mistreatment of insiders. Dr. Nahim also believes that the issue of the Whiteman and Blackman high schools also have the participation of students from the violence increased. He noted that the culture of violence is now widely distributed to schools and noting that it would be hard to stop now. On the way forward, he pointed out that the government should try and rehabilitate a number of students involved in the war and must a general nationwide campaign against drug abuse. An FBC student who describes herself as Dr. Sammy Nahim supported the claims by saying that the students openly drinking alcohol in the campus in broad daylight. He even claimed that open ghettos in the mountainous areas around the campus male section.
Isle of Demise
However, an event which happened on Saturday, December 20, 2008 could possibly change the history of Social Clubs in FBC and other institutions. Mohamed Juana was reportedly a 18 years severely beaten during an initiation ceremony – his injuries were so severe that he later died. Police said the deceased died after the launch ceremony of the club, who beat the circles concerned, stuffing them with drugs and alcohol and putting them through dangerous drills.
Already made public the autopsy report which showed that physical torture was the cause of the student death.
According to friends and colleagues of Mohamed as he was determined to join three clubs mentioned that he went to FBC The opening is only about two days after attending a different introduction to another club. However, in a press statement, the executive board said the name of the 18-year-old Juana was not found on any of the faculty of the college lists. But the board later admitted that the student belonged to a specific department in the college. FBC Registrar SoRIE N. Dumbuya said However, evidence to prove that Mohamed Juana is registered with an independent body to the computer on campus. When contacted the computer school declined to comment to give on the matter.
Parents of late Mohamed Juana expressed open despair at the demise of their son. "Whatever the outcome of the case to the court will I'm not the perpetrators of the death of my son to forget, "the father of Mohamed Juana is reported to have said. A cousin of the deceased said the family was in deep grief at the loss of their son, and sorrow is sure to increase as more evidence of Juana's death comes out. In a very passionate testimony, Juana's mother and sister all have to take account of their last minute contacts with Mohamed in his ongoing trial.
Presidents and Public Notice
The death of President Ernest Bai Koroma Mohamed led by President Koroma described as "sects" the activities of the clubs in learning institutions in the country. The president called to a full scale investigation into the incident and immediately hit a ban on the activities of all clubs on national institutions.
And the fatal collapse of Mohamed has opened a floodgate of discussion with several countries to ask what went wrong? Universities, the authorities do not see this coming? Were the police and other law enforcement agencies their work to do?
But some were quick to point out that those clubs were usually their foul deeds under cover when there were already restricted by Warden of the FBC Student, Mr James Fofanah and the University authorities for other forms of violence-related activities of the clubs violate college rules. Also most of the initiations were reportedly in secret locations and interested members were voluntarily initiations. So this was something by some to be really difficult to be controlled by authorities.
Enforcement Action
A professor of sociology and a member of the Disciplinary Committee, who prefers anonymity, said the act of violence clubs initiation is uncivilized. "Have you ever seen or heard of any society on earth that beats their members to death, only uncivilized and uncultured members of a given society to do that, "he said.
Minister for Education, Dr Minkilu Bah, who was also a lecturer at FBC called the way club initiations were made. It condemned by to say that was incredible student who claimed to undergo tertiary education can cleave such a horrible practice.
Chief of Police Media, Inspector Samura, who has also a former student of FBC said that the police have not received formal complaints of student violence. He said that Mohamed Juana matter is taken very seriously by the police, he said confidence that the police will always be quick to act in a violent act to stifle students if they have a few days after the death of Juana when a group of students initiating a number of school pupils at the Kingtom Cemetery arrested, adjacent to the St. Edwards Secondary School. "We are still hunting for the suspects and will everything to that justice is done in this case to ensure it, "Inspector Samura assured. According to Cotton Tree News, Fourah Bay College Administration says Members of the Island Club will not be allowed to attend classes or exams to take, unless a police clearance.
Blindfolded Initiation
According to one student who would rather known as Dado, he claimed that he was an excruciating initiation later and got through, he said they were made to take vows that if they behave infidelity, breach the rules or a rival club, the wrath of the Lord shall fall upon them and they will not succeed in their academic endeavors. He said they were also slightly it tasted like drinking the blood of a chicken. "Since we were blindfolded, I could not tell exactly where the blood came from, but it had a very bad taste, if you spit it from your punished for that and forced to drink again. A society, I can not say all, but it's really an awful experience, I almost regret taking part because I was not forced to join. The good thing is that since I was a part of a brotherhood and will always stand by my colleagues in good times and bad, we always look our leaders. If I have no food and money I just go to one of the room my partner and eat, and if someone from the opposing club to mess with my partner I take the weapons for his account. We had a tight sense of unity that will never be broken, even after notice, "Dado said.
Sectarianism?
A concerned parent who has spoken out in the VOH FM 96.2 radio call-in program in Freetown after the death of Juana the president supported position to say that this was nothing more than cult including set-up to be broken, but this is sectarianism?
Looking at the Oxford Dictionary Online database, cult is defined as follows;
1, a system of religious worship directed at a particular figure or object. 2, a small religious group regarded as strange or as imposing excessive control over members. 3, something popular or fashionable among a certain part of society.
Depending on your analysis, definition 2 or 3 could probably be provided to a part of revelation or frequency that there came from club activities in tertiary institutions, but Sahid Ahmed Nasr Alla, a former student and member of several clubs FBC believes that the activities of the clubs over-hyped due to one or two incidences. He said he was not forced to join clubs on campus and that his experience was far from being a member of a cult group. "As a member Quimanora I was very proud of and part of that club helped me a lot, we loved each other and always had a good time, "said Ahmed.
Others are not so positive, Malik Bangura said he FBC since he never was impressed with club activities and According to him, there were clear evidence of cruelty by the clubs there, "I can remember a remarkable colleague of mine, Alpha Sesay was severely beaten on the notice of everything, another Sama Banya was beaten and tortured during an apparent initiation ceremony. The other thing is that members of these clubs do not behave rationally they just act on the ideology of their clubs, even though it is sometimes against the conventional wisdom. On that basis I made my mind not inviting, although I was sometimes threatened by a number of my peers, I never gave up on their threats. I would definitely say that clubs are not sects, but some do behave like cult groups, "said Malik.
Forced to become a member?
Kwekegor Sheik Umar, a Liberal member and law student said his own experience is much better and was never forced to close for liberals. However, he agreed that certain tactics used by clubs such as persuasion through of peers, but said he had never seen a case where a student was forced or threatened to join a club before.
Mariama Turay, a freshman said that in her first time at FBC saw her had several calls for her to one of the clubs in the neighborhood, but she said she was not coerced or threatened to join one of them. "Infact one thing I noticed is that there are some clubs on campus that are very difficult to invite and the load is mostly on students wishing to participate in all going out and these clubs that they are interested and fit "to convince some of their unity. I think most students can agree that in general students to go and join clubs with their free will, "says Mariama.
Blame Game
Some students are already pointing fingers elsewhere as outright criticism fell on their heads for what many now see as their fault. But Victor Karimu, an honors student at FBC I say teachers are solely responsible for the division and the violent nature of politics on campus, he also said some teachers punish students during exams that they believe not in their camp. He also said there is a bit of national politics in the current problem – highlighting the Student Union last election in which there were allegations that the current government interfered with the remote to swing the election process away from the established SU regime.
Mohamed Bah, a graduate students even went further to claim that during the last election Auradical names reportedly undertaking SLPP supporters were taken to State House by the liberals members, indicating that if they (Auradicals) wins the election SU these factors will increase pressure on the current APC government. Bah believes that external influences are very negative effects on student clubs and political associations. He said one of the solutions to violence on campus is to reverse the involvement of both national government and college administration.
Ban all clubs?
If the louder voices from various sections of the country for the elimination of all clubs in schools, Some have called for caution against passing any law that would limit the activities of the clubs in the country. Minister of Education Dr. Minkailu Bah believes the ban would not rescue situation, he retained the prohibition of the clubs in the university is a temporary.
While Victor Karimu who described himself as a neutral supports the ban on clubs as a plus and a very good decision on mental health on university campuses to restore Mohamed Bah Auradicals or disagree, saying that banning the clubs not the solutions. He said such a move would force clubs to operate underground and are likely to intensify rather than violence to curb it is.
Kwekegor Sheik Umar Liberal opponents shared the same opinion with his colleague that a ban is not the solution, but said that the university administration, the head of clubs to commit to a memorandum agreement that they should refrain from violence during election registration and initiation processes. "If there is violence, the heads of the clubs should be to book, "said Kwekegor.
Online Campaign
Supporters of the beleaguered Island Club have started their campaign's online Cause there is already a campaign group launched in the world's largest online social networking website, Facebook, the name of the group that has been growing in numbers; Prayers Plea of NOT GUILTY and for those accused of the death of M. Juana.
Conclusion
As the debate rages on about it seems that the murder had already begun Mohamed Juana would spend most of the light of the most hideous part of students' club life. But based of our investigation so far, the Juana incident is just one example of a problem that is cooking over the years. Students are desperate to express themselves, and a couple of reasons, such as alcohol, drugs, divisive ideologies, interference and prop up a number of lectures and politicians, have been encouraging students to go amok and behave as if they are above the law.
As a former student at FBC myself I believe that the university student government must go and set up new systems to regulate the activities of the social and political clubs on campus.

Juana who is Mohamed?
As he strove to Fourah Bay College (FBC), Mohamed Gamanga Kadiatu Juana Juana made his mother a sense of pride and optimism for the future of his son, did a little realized she that her son slowly toward a tragic demise.
Mohamed was not a FBC student in the right sentence because he was a member of a computer department that was not complete Accreditation granted by the university authorities, but friends of Mohamed said he FBC dream that was always visible in him. He not only had the FBC dream, but he also had the In the midst of his elite social clubs "of the nation's leading university. In fairness to Mohamed had a justifiable sense of being FBC a student because he FBC not only do most students use the facilities used, he rubbed the skin with FBC students some who were his primary and secondary school mates.
"My son was very friendly and an athlete, he also had not gone now, he would be playing soccer and to spend time with friends. He was a pretty wild boy when he came as a child, but later he became more thoughtful and calm, "said Juana Kadiatu, Mohamed's mother.
Before Ms Juana could go forward and say more about her deceased son, there was a deep sense of silence and despair in her face. You could go directly to her pain and her somber mood tells you without delay to the trauma she has undergone since her son's tragic downfall met. I immediately shared her pain – and what was more compassion as you see Mrs. Juana's own handwriting on the back of a photograph of Mohamed when he was a toddler, which reads: "My Sweet Loving son, Mohamed."
Mohamed is one of the secondary school colleagues at the Beacon High School in the Main Motor Road, Johnny said Mohamed bereavement came as a shock not only to his family, but also to them, "I knew Mohamed as a very determined guy who is always strong convictions about what he does, so therefore I was not surprised that he took the risk," said Johnny.
Mohamed 'older sister, Juana Fatmata says she would never forget the time she went to receive her brother after she was abandoned in a nearby field by an unknown person. For his part, Sheikh Mohamed Lamin Juana's father has decided to keep a cool head since the death of his son and has not commented on reports whether he said he would not forget the perpetrators of the killers of his son from the outcome of the lawsuit.
