San Diego waterfront is ideal for quick getaway

From a colorful waterfront to the vibrant Gaslamp District, a visit to the San Diego waterfront will not be missing for things to do.

If you do not have much time to spend, but want to pack your trip with memorable experiences, the San Diego waterfront similar to the top of your list.

Of course most people will spend more than one night if they've driven to the southernmost city of California and the San Diego area offers more than enough engaging experiences to last for a longer holiday. The consistently sunny weather and beaches alone are enough to convince most vacationers this is a good place to be.

But a "quickie" to San Diego also has its advantages and is more in line with declining reimbursements holidays we see today as companies push harder productivity. If only a short time you have available, a great place to target is the San Diego waterfront, Gaslamp District – it's all in the vicinity and area has a high concentration of attractions, for the most part, are cheap and easy.

We are headquartered in the new Omni Hotel was built in conjunction the new city Petco Park opened in April 2004. Obviously, the Omni was the perfect place to stay while in town for a Padres game – the stadium is located next door and even connected by a bridge – but it's also an excellent choice to take full advantage of the historic Gaslamp Quarter San Diego, the 14-square-block area that is dressed to the heart of the nightlife of San Diego has become.

The shiny new Omni represents the best hotels in the center – our spacious suite was like a home away from home with the most Stylish and modern furnishings, warm colors, a large comfortable king bed, a handy desk and sitting area and an oversized bath area, resembling a trend in modern hotel layouts be. The windows we had a 13th story views of the Coronado Bridge and San Diego South Bay. This may be one of those properties we would be content with just relaxing weekend in a bathrobe, but just outside San Diego, we were afraid to start exploring.

The Omni is in the southern tip of the Gaslamp District, so with just a little walking Soon we arrived at dozens of restaurants – literally all kinds of dishes, any restaurant with a twist for people in the door. Options here run the gamut from the messy ribs Last Resort Dick's perfect for presentations offered at George's on Fifth, exquisite Persian cuisine in Bandar at the bar eating at Moose McGillycuddy's. Terraces are great in the Gaslamp – even on this Thursday night the streets were alive with groups of party people, X and Generation Y couples and even many families. The best place to eight, this was all from our table right on the sidewalk, where we enjoyed delicious Mexican dishes prepared by La Fiesta.

Boutiques, trendy shops and, yes, a few tacky tourist shops interspersed between the restaurants and nightclubs. Many of the ornate and historic buildings have been renovated, just to keep things interesting, the merchants in the Gaslamp bring re-enactors, dressed in period costume to help explain history of the Gaslamp Quarter. As we walked through the Gaslamp were groups of costumed re-enactors positioned at a number of the street corners where each of the actors the role of a historic San Diego citizen. Staying in character, re-enactors than losing a good measure of San Diego history while staging a sort of mini-play for fascinated visitors.

The energy of the Gaslamp Quarter is unmistakable and stay in a hotel in the city, visitors take full advantage of night life to be – no worries about driving home, no concern about even driving from club to club. The Gaslamp Quarter is all that is within walking distance and even at late, seems remarkably safe for visitors.

The next morning we walked to the San Diego Maritime Museum. The Omni has a number of blocks in this part of the water so why we – but parking on the waterfront is abundant and reasonably priced. For those interested in things nautical, this part of the San Diego water you feel like a child a candy store. Among other historic ships on display, the Maritime Museum includes a 1962 Soviet submarine, the 1863-vintage Star of India – one of the world's oldest working vessels – By 1898 steam ferry Berkeley, and the HMS Surprise, a replica of a 18th-century Royal Navy frigate that was used in the filming of the movie Master and Commander – The Far Side of the World.

Visitors can stroll through each of these ships and view historical displays, photographs and information panels that help to give a great sense of how daily life was really on board one of these historic vessels. The submarine is cramped beyond imagination and actually requires some physical skill like walking through it. HMS Surprise is fun to explore and entertaining for those who remember the film Master and Commander. With the largest interior space, the Berkeley offers even more variety of exhibitions based the history of maritime activities and how these ships do what they do. The Star of India can be visited on the dock and regular visitors will ship sails.

Maritime history of another kind is included in the new USS Midway Museum, also located in this general part of the San Diego waterfront. Just one visit to an aircraft carrier, for one thing, is a treat for yourself. But in the case of Midway, a 47-year history that is good to keep in the back of your mind when you a real sense of how it is to living and working on an aircraft carrier.

This emphasis on the military does not end our tour of the USS Midway. Then it was time for a cruise through the harbor to take on the 150-foot Adventure Hornblower, where we were treated to a fantastic sea lions and other marine life and where we are again a close-up look at the U.S. Navy have firepower. The on our cruise boat captain told us that our one hour cruise was the best he'd had all week – there was also a great view of the USS Shilo (the most powerful warship on the planet ") and a nuclear submarine returned to base. sprinkle in a military jet or helicopter buzzing by now and then and you could not forget the importance of the U.S. Army in San Diego.
