Why was Cassius Clay influential during the baby boom?
Cassius Clay fought Sonny Liston during the baby boom, and to this day a very famous fight. I also know he changed his name to Muhammad Ali in order to avoid the Vietnam War. What did Cassius Clay do to affect Baby Boomers?
I grew up in that period and never could see that he was much affected at all, tho he was certainly a media sensation. A little of it was his talent and many of them had the word in verse and his braggadocio, especially the arrogant and often repeated line "I am the greatest!" Of course, the draft evasion was a national issue. As a boxer, he could not hold a candle to former fighters like Joe Louis and Rocky Marciano. And most of his opponents were no-talent bums anyway (including by Liston, this was in the days when pro-boxing was largely led by Frankie Carbo and the Mob, the fix was small and even thugs like Liston could become champion of the World Heavyweight). I would not fight with Ali and you feel sorry for him in more recent years for his physical condition, but he was never affected me or anyone I can remember from the era. I was against the war in Vietnam early on and missed the party itself, but I am lucky there. I knew many who believe the same way about the war, but went there and fought it and some not return. Most of us then Cassius Clay, aka Muhammad Ali, was just an overrated boxer and a rich draft dodger. I hated the thought of returning to the sport or recovery of his title and a lot of others felt the same way at the moment.
