The history of the robe
Definititions
For the purposes of this article may be useful to start with a few definitions the various descriptors that are most often used to refer to a garment worn around the house as loungewear:
Robe
The English word 'robe' is taken from the middle English word with the same name which means 'garment', the word 'robe' is its routes in the Frankish language "Rouba. It is believed to have originated with the meaning of "booty" or "booty" that link to articles and clothing stolen in connection with the word 'Rob'. In recent times the housecoat has become a somewhat dated term that is rarely used. Most people prefer adaptation of the gown as a unisex term for both male and female house robes. In a recent poll that was run by thestudentroom.co.uk, 91% of male and female respondents preferred the use of the term gown.
The history of the robe
It is thought that the Wearing a bathrobe in the western world has its routes in the mid-17th century, was originally worn by men and it was the 'banyan'. The term "banyan" included many different styles of dresses that were popular among men between the mid-17th to early 19th century.
Europeans began to dress style and influences from other cultures into the Eary 17th century and the Banyan is the earliest example. It is thought that men 'Banyan' design from Persian and Asian inspired clothing (Banyan in Portuguese, Arabic and Gujarati approved all meaning 'merchant').
At the time of the mid 17th century a popular taste for the exotic and Oriental had become a mainstream fascination in Europe. fell, and could be attributed to, strengthened trade routes with the East. The Chinoiserie style emerged as a popular fashion. This French term for "Chinese-like" has since become a recurring theme in European artistic styles. Chinoiserie reflecting Chinese artistic influences. This predilection for the exotic and oriental was a guiding influence on the success of the 'banyan', this name is the precursor the 'gown'.
Also described in texts as a morning gown, robe de chambre or nightgown, the banyan was a loose floor length gown. The style of the banyan tree in the year 1800 was a simple "T-shape" kimono-style design as shown below. Banyan were usually produced from imported Indian Chintz fabric, although they were sometimes made of Chinese and French side also.
The Banyan was worn around the house as a casual jacket, the most worn over the shirt and trousers. The Banyan was usually accompanied by a soft, turban-like cap that was worn in place of the formal wig, a wig worn by men very popular at the time of the 17th and 18th centuries. In the 18th century the fashion for men, particularly of an intellectual philosophical beliefs and their commissioned to paint portraits, while wearing their banyan or gowns:
'Loose dresses to wear to the simple and powerful exercise of the faculties of the mind. This observation is so obvious and so widely known, that we are eager men painted in gowns, when they sit in their libraries. '

Later the Banyan become a more fitted style jacket with inset sleeves similar to a man. The Banyan was made available in many different shapes and sizes with different cuts and styles. After the 19th century, the name of the 'Banyan' has also become the 'dressing gowns become 'Today.
Women and the robe
All this talk of people in bathrobes is fine, but I hear you ask – so what about women and bathrobes?!
While men in Europe were quick to adopt and Asian and Asian inspired textiles and clothing was not taken until the end of the 18th century that fashion would be affected. What does it mean to dream of friends and family members all wear white clothes / jackets?
