What is the MIB (Medical Information Bureau)?
It sounds rather ominous … The Medical Information Bureau or MIB. Our imagination can quickly lead us if we men in long coats with ear-pieces rifling through garbage from the local doctor for a piece of "gotcha" information. Let some of the mystery and discover the MIB how it affects the term life insurance.
First, what's the MIB? Let's start with who has the initiative. It was founded in 1902. It is being a repository of information shared and used by insurance companies formed … both life and medical (where the distinction is applicable). It operates as a nonprofit in this endeavor. Essence, life insurance guarantees relevant health information that is accessible during the application so that other companies will have access to healthcare information for future applications / claims settlements have. What is its purpose? Well, if a person applies for coverage and a history of cancer or high cholesterol (eg paramedical exam) it turns out, future carriers can use this information in case the applicant is trying to see the same to fit with another carrier and have this information from the application. In a nutshell, it's a collection of medical information data that compare what an applicant is taking in their current application. This information is still limited to 2 years contestability clause, which means that a carrier must show fraud or misrepresentation of information as provided by the MIB within two years the policy "effective date in order to terminate the life policy. After this period of two years, the information remains in the MIB, but typically can not be used against the applicant to terminate coverage or avoiding payment of a life insurance claim. As far as life insurance underwriting is, the MIB information not be used to deny coverage or an additional premium payments , but it defeats the purpose of having life insurance for false or incomplete information that the future of your policy at risk.
There are certain rules MIB who must abide by. The applicant shall give written notice that a declaration of their medical status may be provided to the MIB as a result of the life insurance application process. This authorization allows the MIB for this information to other insurers that request this information at the time of application or filing a claim. In addition, an applicant to request a copy of their information so as to review the accuracy in the MIB database. Medical information will usually only be sent to a physician of the applicant. Essentially, MIB to the applicant what information they receive and what it can do.
What's our take on the MIB? In a perfect world without fraud and breach (or better yet, the need Life insurance at all), we would not need the MIB. This is not the world and there is fraud and deception during the life insurance underwriting process. The problem is that this fraud is directly linked to the life insurance rates you pay. Without the MIB, you would pay more for your life insurance in force by virtue of a few rotten apples who try to cheat the system. It's a necessary evil in our eyes. In the end, if you are honest and thorough on the insurance applications you complete, the MIB is a non-issue.
