Although the film about Elle Woods, a sorority girl's boyfriend follows to Harvard Law School and quickly proves she is much smarter than her blond hair and put pink outfits, was a hit, the stage version is fast eclipsing binary in popularity! The list of the creators behind Legally Blonde the musical reads like a who's who list in Broadway, from Tony Award-winning director / choreographer Jerry Mitchell (Hairspray), book writer Heather Hach (Freaky Friday), set designer David Rockwell (Dirty Rotten Scoundrels), composer and lyricist Laurence O'Keefe (Batboy) and Nell Benjamin (Sarah, Plain and Tall).
The tour cast for Legally Blonde is as impressive as the party of the show's creators! Elle Woods played by veteran stage Gulsvig Becky, who also appeared in Peter Pan and Hairspray. Blond (duh!) actress / singer was bitten by the Broadway bug in the fourth grade, when she starred in a school production of Annie. After graduating from high school ahead of her class, Gulsvig moved into the Big Apple to try her hand at a stage career and never looked back. Gulsvig served as understudy for Laura Bell during the musical pre-Broadway run and recorded as Elle Woods once the show hit the road.
The Moorhead, Minn., native does not seem to share many similarities with her SoCal stage persona, but told the Palm Beach Daily News, "I would not say that I do not like Elle. I'm half on her. I'm no high heels, pretty-in-pink, super girlie. But we have the same spirit. We follow our dreams, and we are true to ourselves. "When playing the perky sorority girl on stage, wearing bright Gulsvig clothing from designers such as Nanette Lepore, Diane Von Furstenberg and Ralph Lauren, but do not expect to see the actress dolled when not on stage when they News told the Palm Beach Daily that they have more of a jeans and t-shirt kind of girl!
Legally Blonde's touring cast also features DB Bonds (whose Broadway credits include parts in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Les Miserables and The Phantom of the Opera) as Emmett Richmond (the dreamy Law assistant played by Luke Wilson in the film), Natalie Joy Johnson as Paulette Bona Fonte (the sympathetic hairdresser played by Jennifer Coolidge in the film) and Michael Rupert (whose Broadway credits include Falsettos, for which he earned a Tony NOD and Sweet Charity for which he received a Tony Award and Drama Desk Award) as Professor Callahan (Shady professor / lawyer played by Victor Garber in the film).
Warner Huntington III (played by Matthew Davis in the film), the friend Elle follows to Harvard, is played by Jeff McLean (an original member of the Las Vegas Company of Spamalot), while his girlfriend hid Vivienne Kensington (played by Selma Blair in the film) is played by Megan Lewis (who appeared in the Broadway production of Grey Gardens).
