Little girls and their dolls
I've had people tell me … Little girls just do not play with dolls anymore. My answer … Have you encouraged her, or played with her?
I know that growing up, that dolls a very important part of my life played. Our family struggling to make ends meet, and our toys were treasured and few. So cherish the fact that the dolls I owned as a child, still have my precious possessions today. I saved them from the toy box after my two younger sisters also had their turn with them!
My dolls were babies when we were pioneers played, with a car and trunk. They were my patient clothing models, when I started the art of sewing to learn, and put them terribly designed and sewn with many outfits. They were my comfort on cold winter evenings.
My sisters and I played with and nurtured our dolls much longer than most young girls seem to today.
Paper dolls were another big part of our creative childhood. A few magazines of the era, as McCall came out with a sheet of paper dolls each month. We had a neighbor who subscribed to McCall and saved the paper doll sheets for us. Betsy McCall and her friends were much expected on a monthly basis! Carefully cut out the dolls glued to the back of cornflakes and cut, they made a fantastic play things. Looking at the enlarged scale sets that are presented to the children of today, it's hard for me to think that they really stimulate creativity more than doing our own imagination.
Dollhouses again played a major role in the development of our creativity. If we could only dream of their own store bought dolls, and furniture, we diligently put out time and again our own making dollhouses from which materials came to hand. A large cardboard box held endless possibilities.
Items such as empty reels, match boxes, bottle caps, a few of them were furniture, china and much more. Careful searching through the Eaton's and Sears catalog and weekly sales flyers also a wealth of accessories. Photos the food flyers glued cardboard were used to fill the kitchen cupboards, people cut out and pasted on cardboard was the dollhouse families. My sisters and I enjoyed countless hours of creative fun with these simple materials.
I recently read an article that suggested little girls are tiring of dolls as young as 6 years old. What do they play with, that can develop their imagination, creativity and nurturing instincts.
I hope that parents everywhere to realize the value in simple, uncomplicated toys for their children. A doll with a doll family, furniture and accessories countless hours of decorating and imaginative fun, as rooms are changed and rearranged. Not only is the imagination developed, but the fine motor skills are strengthened as children learn to manipulate small objects.
I can not help but feel that a little girl who takes care of the change, put to bed and adores a favorite doll, learn valuable nurturing instincts that her stay in her adult life.
