Science Fiction Magazine

History of science fiction magazines
Great American science fiction magazines include Amazing Stories, Astounding Science Fiction, Galaxy Science Fiction, The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, Isaac Asimov's Science Fiction Magazine. The most influential and longest running British science fiction magazine was new worlds, although more recent British SF magazines include Interzone (magazine) and Polluto. Many science fiction magazines were published in languages other than English, but none has gained worldwide recognition or influence in the world of English science fiction.
There is a growing trend toward important work published First on the Internet, both for reasons of economy and access. A web-only publication can cost as little as one tenth of the cost of publishing a print magazine, and as a result this, some believe that e-zines are more innovative and take greater risks with material. Moreover, the magazine is international access, and distribution is not a problem but darkness can be. Magazines like Strange Horizons, Ideomancer, intergalactic Medicine Show, Jim Baen's Universe, and the Australian magazine Andromeda Spaceways Inflight Magazine are examples of successful internet magazines. (Andromeda provides copies electronically or on paper.) Web-based magazines tend to be short stories and articles that are easy to read on a screen, and many of them pay little or nothing to the authors, making their universe of employees. However, the following web-based journals included "paying markets" by the SFWA, which means that the "professional" rate of pay or more 5c/word Strange Horizons, intergalactic Medicine Show, Jim Baen's Universe, Clarke and ChiZine World Magazine.
The World Science Fiction Convention (Worldcon) awarded a Hugo Award annually to the best science fiction magazine, until that contract was changed to one for Best Editor in the early 1970's, the Best Semi-Professional Magazine award can go to either a news-oriented magazine or a small press fiction magazine.
From 1926 until early 1950, the American science fiction magazines were the main sources of written science fiction. Today relatively few paper-based science fiction magazines, and most printed science fiction appears first in book form. Science fiction magazines began in the United States, but there were a large number of British science fiction magazines and periodicals published throughout the world, like France and Argentina.
The first science fiction magazines
First issue of Amazing Stories (April 1926) with art by Frank R. Paul.
The first science fiction magazine, Amazing Stories, was published in a format known as cloth, about the size of life but with a square back. Later, most journals have changed to the pulp magazine format, about the size comic books or National Geographic, but again with a square back. Now, most journals published in digest format, about the size of Reader's Digest, though a few are about the standard 8.5 x 11 "format, and often enjoy spines, instead of glued square spines. Science fiction magazines in this format, often non-fiction media coverage in addition to the fiction. Knowledge of these formats is an advantage in locating journals in libraries and collections, which usually shelf magazines according to size.
The premiere issue of Amazing Stories (April 1926), edited and published by Hugo Gernsback, showing a cover of Frank R. Paul illustrate Off on a Comet by Jules Verne. After many minor changes in title and major changes in format, policies and the publisher, Amazing Stories ended January 2005, at 607 points.
Except the latest issue of Stirring Science Stories, the last true sheet size SF (and fantasy) magazine was amazing adventures in 1939, but soon turned into pulp format, and it was later taken over by the digest-sized stablemate fantastic in 1953. Before the consolidation, was 128 points.
Many fiction magazines published in this sheet, with the exception of the classic reprints by authors like HG Wells, Jules Verne and Edgar Allan Poe, is only of antiquarian interest. Some of them were written by teenage science fiction fans, who were paid little or nothing for their efforts. Jack Williamson for example, was 19 when he sold his first story to Amazing Stories. His writing has improved over time, and until his death in 2006, he was still publishing a writer at age 98. Some of the stories in the early issues were scientists or doctors who knew little or nothing about writing fiction, but who have done their best, for example, Dr. David H. Keller. Probably the two best original science fiction stories ever published in a sheet were science fiction magazine "A Mars Odyssey" by Stanley G. Weinbaum and "Gostak and Doshes" by Dr. Miles Breuer, influenced Jack Williamson. "The Gostak Doshes and is one of the few stories of that time are still widely read today. Other stories of interest from the sheet magazines include the first Buck Rogers story. Armageddon 2419 AD by Philip Francis Nowlan and the Skylark of Space by EE Smith and Mrs. Lee Hawkins Garby, in Amazing Stories in 1928.
There are a few unsuccessful attempts to the sheet size by using a better quality paper to revive, especially Science Fiction edited by Hugo Gernsback Plus (195.253, eight numbers). Astounding on two occasions briefly tried to revive the sheet size, with 16 sheets and 25 sheet 19421943 issues issues (such as Analog, including the first publication of Frank Herbert's Dune) in 19631965. The fantasy magazine Unknown, also edited by John W. Campbell, changed his name to unknown worlds and published a ten-sheet size matters before returning to pulp size for the last four issues. Amazing Stories sheet size 36 issues published in 19911999, and the last three points were sheet size, 20042005.
The pulp era
Startling Stories (November 1948). Cover by Earle Bergey.
Amazing Stories began in January 1930. After several changes in name and format (Astounding Science Fiction, Analog Science Fact & Fiction, Analog) is still published today (although it's no longer pulp format in 1943). Its chief editor, John W. Campbell Jr., is credited with turning away from science fiction adventure stories on alien planets and towards well-written, scientifically literate stories with a better characterization than in previous pulp science fiction. Isaac Asimov's Foundation Trilogy and Robert A. Heinlein's future history in the year 1940, Hal Clement mission of gravity in the year 1950, and Frank Herbert's Dune in the year 1960, and many other science fiction classics, all first appeared under the editorship Campbell.
In 1955, the pulp era was over, and some pulp magazines changed to digest size. Printed with colorful adventure stories were relegated to the comic book heroes. Same period saw the end of the radio adventure drama (U.S.). Subsequent attempts to revive both radio and pulp fiction adventure, met with a very limited success, but both enjoy a nostalgic following who collect old magazines and radio programs. Many characters, including The Shadow, were popular both in pulp magazines and on radio.
Most consisted of transplanted pulp science fiction adventure stories, without much thought, to alien planets. Many were so badly written science fiction even today still carries a slight tinge of its pulp heritage. The familiar image of pulp science fiction is a beautiful, scantily clad, big-breasted woman drained by a bug-eyed monster, but there were many classic stories first published in pulp magazines. In 1939, a groundbreaking year, sold all of the writers their first professional science fiction story to the pulp: Isaac Asimov, Robert A. Heinlein, Arthur C. Clarke, Alfred Bester, Fritz Leiber, AE van Vogt and Theodore Sturgeon. These were among the main SF writers of the pulp era, and they are all still read today.
Digest-sized magazines
After the pulp era, digest-sized magazines dominated the kiosk. The first sf magazine tailored to digest change was amazing in 1943. Other important digests, who published more literary science fiction, were The Magazine of Fantasy And Science Fiction, Galaxy Science Fiction and like. Edited by Cele Goldsmith, Amazing and Fantastic changed from pulp-style adventure stories, science fiction literature. Goldsmith published The first professionally published stories by Roger Zelazny (not counting student fiction Literary Cavalcade), Keith Laumer, Thomas M. Disch, Ursula K. and Sonya Dorman Le Guin. There was no shortage of digests, the tradition continues of hastily written pulp adventure stories set on other planets. Other Worlds and fantasy stories had no literary pretensions. The main pulp writers such as Heinlein, Asimov and Clarke continued to write to the digests, and a new generation of writers such as Walter M. and Algis Budrys Miller, Jr., their most famous stories sold to the digests. A Canticle for Leibowitz in The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction.
Most of the digest magazines started in the year 1950, in the years between the film Destination Moon, the first major science fiction film in a decade, and the launching of Sputnik, a new interest in space as a real possibility fueled. Most survived only a few problems. By 1960, the United States, there were only six sf digests, in 1970 there were seven in 1980 there were five in 1990 only four and only three in 2000.
British science fiction magazines
The first British sf magazine was Tales of Wonder, pulp size, 19371942, 16 points (unless you count Scoops, a tabloid boys' paper which published 20 weekly issues in 1934). It was followed by two magazines, both named Fantasy, one pulp size publishing three points in 19381939, the other digest size, publishing three points in 19461947. The most important British sf magazine, new worlds, three issues published in pulp size 19461947, Before tailored to digest. With these exceptions, the pulp phenomenon, like the strip, was largely a U.S. format. By 2007, the only surviving major British science fiction magazine is Interzone, published in "magazine" format, although small press titles such as postscripts and Polluto available.
The decline of the science fiction magazine
During recent decades, the movement of all science fiction digest magazines declined steadily. New formats were tried, especially the smooth-stapled magazine format, paperback format and the webzine. Some of the best science fiction published in webzines beginning in the early 21st century. The main webzine at the beginning of the 21st century SciFiction, edited by Ellen Datlow on http://www.SciFi.com, but managing the SciFi.com canceled in early 2006, so now Strange Horizons has taken over as the most important science fiction webzine. There are also several semi-professional magazines struggle along on the sale of a few thousand copies, but often important work of fiction.
The emergence of the science fiction magazine
For the movement of the traditional American sf magazines has declined, new journals have sprung up online for international small-press publishers. In the past ten years, Science Fiction World, China's longest-running science fiction magazine, has doubled in circulation to 320,000, and launched a sister magazine. Currently, the Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers of America lists 17 sf magazines that pay enough to be considered professional markets. Locus, in its annual list of recommended reading short fiction, selected stories 27 magazines from around the world, but over one third of the more than 100 stories above first appeared in anthologies, and the magazine stories, more than half appeared For the first time in either Asimov's Science Fiction or The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction. [Citation needed]
Best of the Year anthologies
Beginning in 1949, Each year there are one or more of the years best science fiction anthologies, collecting stories from the science fiction magazines. A series of paperbacks published by Isaac Asimov and Martin H. Greenberg, went back to the early years of science fiction and published best anthologies of the year for the years 1939 to 1963. Damon Knight edited an anthology of the best sf magazine from the year 1930.
