History of fashion: The Byzantine Empire

In the third century the Roman Empire was dying. The emperor Constantine, however, would begin the transformation process which Eastern Christian empire was a forward when he was the second capital of the Roman Empire in Constantinople made in the year 324. Located on the European side of the Bosphorus, at the crossroads between East and West, Constantinople would become the richest city in the world. The finest luxury goods – particularly silk – were imported from Asia. On his turn, Constantinople exported to Western Europe artworks, silk robes, papyrus, porcelain, glassware, incense and perfumes.

During eleven centuries, the Byzantine Empire experienced a period of extreme brilliance, under Justinian (AD 527-565), followed by a temporary drop, then from the ninth to the thirteenth century, an extraordinary development, followed by a gradual weakening characterized by severe economic and political losses in the conquest of Constantinople by the Turks ended in 1453.

Byzantine costume reflect these diverse influences. Is it the characteristics of ancient classical costume, but it was mainly influenced by the Middle East luxury in nature and color. The merger was prolonged until the end of the Empire by the empirical court.

Women

Women had a limited and isolated existence dominated by national obligations. The only exception were women of the nobility, especially Theodora, who was a powerful role in the empire.

Costume

Byzantine style was influenced by both the Greek and Roman dress, and was characterized by oriental opulence. Form was simple, but bright colors, fringes, tassels, embroidery and jewelry, all Eastern origin, made clothing extravagant luxury. Clothing indicated stature and rank.

Byzantine wardrobe was rich and complex due to the different origins of many of Byzantine clothing. The pants were borrowed from the Huns and Persians. The tzitsakfon came from the Khazares. The soft boots, the paragaudion, a gold-embroidered purple tunic with a leather strap, the kandys, collar and skaramangion ovoidal the tiara, all Persians. The cavvadior the skaranicon granatza and were introduced by the Assyrians and the Medes gave the chain.

Despite her wealth and beauty, expressing the new Byzantine clothing Christian values. The goal was to hide the body. Physical fitness and sex disappeared under the long flowing robes. Clothing literally made a statement of religious devotion, for they were often decorated with religious scenes. Initially there was no distinction between the clothing of the clergy and the rest of the population, but the former were banned fashion trends to follow. Catholic and Orthodox vestments today the same way they once did.

Imperial costume

Emperors, who acted both head of state and church, and have had a lavish ceremonial dress had contributed to the reputation of the realm of sartorial excess.

Of 4th to 6thcentury emperors wore a gown woven gold thread and a Chlamys mounted on the right shoulder with a fibula rich. Justinian wore the toga Roman consuls, the trabea, a shawl crossed on the chest, and paragaudion. Empress wore a white tunic with a vertical band of embroidery, and a dress with elbow sleeves.

A wide collar embroidered with gold and studded with pearls and gems of Persian descent, known as the maniakis, covered the shoulders of the emperor and empress.

In the 10th century, costume was completed with the Imperial Loros, a long scarf embroidered with gold and precious stones.

In the 12th century Byzantium transformed the kaftan worn by Persian soldiers in an elegant garment. A new coat, button front, in vogue. The imperial crown was then completely closed, in the form of a small Dome: The camelaukion.

During the last centuries of Byzantium, the emperor ordered the saccoz, a stiff black or purple gown with attached sleeves at the wrists.

Civil suit

Much less is known about the civil suit because it is not so well documented and what we do know, we have gathered from the description of writers of that era. Ordinary men wore clothes typical of the Steppe people, a blouse or tunic, trousers and shoes, taken from The Huns. Breeches were tight, made from a pattern or embroidered cloth and were worn tucked into the boots that reached mid-calf.

Women clothing

Women's clothing was designed to hide the body and sex to hide. It consisted of several layers starting with a tight shirt, which fell to the only. The tunic worn on the top can be fitted and belted at the waist or just above. It was shorter than the shirt underneath and revealed. Other staples in the Women's' wardrobe, the stoles, the Palla, and a long veil, which fell behind the head, or was folded forward and draped over the arm.

Theodora rich silk dresses were extended with gems and lavish gold embroidery. She wore ropes of pearls, emeralds and rubies, and for ceremonial purposes, a heavy crown of pearls and emeralds that flow through to its chest.

Menswear

In the early centuries of the empire, Roman Byzantine garments copied. Men wore a tight-fitting white tunic Long sleeves, either ankles or knees achieved. Over this she wore underwear dalmatika, a red and gold tunic with long sleeves. Men's wardrobe also included Hosah, a woolen fabric or snake, the Braco or pants, which were later replaced by pants or drawers, the Greeks Chlamys, she wore the tablion, a rectangular deployment of fabric at waist height, and the Roman pallium, whose only shared the name with its predecessor.

The gown was originally worn by most, but from The 6th century was also the mark of the consuls. It was replaced by the mantle, which can be found in three styles: a rectangular piece of cloth that was worn around the shoulders, half circular cape, which was also confirmed at the shoulder, and the circular cape, which was sewn up the front and had an opening for the head.
