The Greatest Man you've never known

Smedley Butler was born July 30, 1881, in West Chester, Pennsylvania, the eldest of three sons. His parents Thomas Stalker Butler and Maud (Darlington) Butler was descended from Quaker families. His father was a lawyer, a judge, and for 31 years, a congressman and chairman of the House Naval Affairs, during the Harding and Coolidge administrations.

Smedley Butler was one of the most decorated soldier ever serve in the military. He is still, to this day, one of only a handful of men to ever receive the Congressional Medal of Honor twice. Butler was decorated for his leadership and courage in such conflicts, Philippine-American War, where he served in Manila.

In October 1899 he saw his first combat action in the conduct of 300 marines to take the city Noveleta against Philippine rebels known as "Insurrectos. In the first moments of the contract, was the top sergeant in Butler's unit were injured. Butler panic, but regained his composure and led the marines in pursuit of the enemy troops. By noon, the marines had scattered the rebels and the stricken city. In the fighting, was a Marine slain and ten were wounded. Another 50 Marines were eliminated by Philippine tropical heat.

Butler also served in the Boxer Rebellion. These were often mentioned by historians as The Boxer Rebellion, or the Righteous Harmony Society Movement. Taking place in China as a response to imperialist expansion in the years 1899-1901.

It was the Boxer Rebellion, which Butler was shot in the thigh but managed to end up saving a man's life (who was actually trying to be, first save) and then under "sever fire" was the wounded man. These safety and other notorious demonstrations of bravery, Butler was awarded the Brevet Medal was awarded in accordance with Marine Corps Order No. 26 (1921), for distinguished conduct and public service in the presence of the enemy. All this and he was not yet nineteen.

Butler then served in the The Banana Wars, a series of occupations in Central America and the Caribbean. The goal is to American business interests in the region to protect.

In 1903, Butler was ordered to defend the U.S. Consulate in Honduras. There he was in the Caribbean at the time, he used a converted banana boat re-named the panther, and 1500 miles to the west hazards.

Smedley then took some time between the campaigns, to get married on June 30, 1905 to Ethel Conway Peters of Philadelphia in Bay Head, New Jersey. The couple even had time to be parents three children: a daughter, Ethel Peters Butler, and two sons, Smedley Darlington, Jr. and Richard Thomas.

From that moment seems Butler was having problems processing of all the death and destruction he had witnessed. In 1908 he received a nervous breakdown and nine (9) months and worked as a miner. While this may have been the case, he still served in other conflicts. From 1909 to 1912, he served in Nicaragua. In January 1914 he served on the coast of Mexico near Veracruz.

In the Haitian fight with the cacos he was a brilliant strategist and ended around the opposition. The struggle (often from hand to hand combat), the reason that President Roosevelt gave the second Medal of Honor he received.

Because of all his faithful service Smedley Butler began the way his world have been working to realize. He began to pay attention to fashion which certain men and institutions and as well behaved as I thought.

During the First World War, to his disappointment, Butler was not assigned to a command the control of the Western Front. Although he wrote and requested it.

In October 1918 he was promoted to the rank of brigadier general at age 37 and placed commissioned by the Camp Ponanezen in Brest, France, disembark a depot that troops of the American Expeditionary Force passed on to the battlefields.

The Navy Distinguished Service Medal was awarded to Smedley for service in World War 1 for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished service in France.

But his military career was tapering, and another equally (maybe more) on the horizon noble vocation. In 1933 Butler denounced capitalism and bankers, as a Marine general admits that "I was a Racketeer for capitalism. "

Butler began to develop his post-Corps career. In May 1931 he took part in a committee established by Oregon Governor Julius L. Meier. The Commission laid the foundations for the Oregon State Police. He began teaching at events and conferences, and after his retirement from the Marines in 1931, he took it on full time. Have donated many of his profits from his lucrative lecture circuit to the Philadelphia job creation. He toured the western United States, making 60 speeches before returning to the marriage of his daughter Marine aviator Lt. John Wehlen. Her marriage was the only time he wore his dress blue uniform after he left the Marines.

In perhaps Smedley Butler's be courageous act of all, in early 1934, Butler alleged the existence of a political conspiracy of Wall Street interests of President Roosevelt, a series allegations that became known in the media as the Business Plot to overthrow. In March 1934, the House of Representatives approved investigations into his allegations by a special commission led by John W. Massachusetts McCormack and Samuel Dickstein of New York. The McCormack-Dickstein Committee was the forerunner of the House Committee on Un-American Activities.

In November 1934 Butler told the committee that a group of businessmen, who claims to be supported by a private army of 500,000 ex-soldiers and others referred to a fascist dictatorship to set. Butler was asked to manage it, he said, by Gerald P. MacGuire, a bond salesman with Grayson MP Murphy & Co. The New York Times reported that Butler had friends told that General Hugh S. Johnson, a former official with the National Recovery Administration, was to be installed as dictator. Butler said MacGuire told him that the attempt coup was supported by three million U.S. dollars, and that 500,000 men were likely to be assembled in Washington, DC the following year. All parties involved alleged , including Johnson, said there was no truth in the story and called it a "joke and a fantasy".

On August 22, Butler MacGuire met in a hotel, according to the report of Butler's, it was on this occasion that MacGuire asked Butler a new veterans organization (The American Legion) walk and run an attempt coup against the president.

On September 13, Paul Comly French, a reporter who had once been private secretary Butler, MacGuire met in his office. In late September, Butler said Van Zandt that co-conspirators would meet him at an upcoming Veterans of Foreign Wars convention. On November 20, the Committee began examining evidence. Journalist, Paul Comly French broke the story in the Philadelphia Record and New York Post on November 21. On November 22, The New York Times wrote his first article on the story and described it as a "gigantic hoax." When the commission final report was released, the Times said the committee "to report that claimed a two-month investigation they believe that General Butler's story of a Fascist march on Washington "alarmingly true" and "It also claimed that conclusive evidence had been found that the much publicized Fascist march on Washington, which had been led by Major. Gen. Smedley D. Butler, retired, according to testimony at a hearing, was actually considered. "Even at that point, Butler was in public he was accused by those portrayed as a fool, conspiracy theorist. While The New York Times had basically motivated Smedley Butler claims he was called an angry, "nut-job" by its contractors. Which he accused entered Irenee du Pont and JP Morgan, and various industrialists and political Wanta-be's. Butler's testimony was heard before Congress on December 29, 1934. With regard to the conversations he had with Jerry MacGuire, Butler passed in his testimony: "She presented to me a rather confused picture, and I could not my mind exactly what she wanted me to do or what their purpose was, but it had something to do with weakening the influence the administration of the soldiers. "She had tried unsuccessfully to him angry at the president and his staff. Told him, he was invited as a distinguished guest of the Convention Chicago. But his name was taken off the list by Louis Howe (Secretary of the President.) This was just a ruse to get him to capitulate to the plan. In a testimony Smedley Butler, he's certainly enough detail to Congress a study to justify, especially since the presidency of the United States is very concerned. But that was not the result. It is important to note that this statement Macguire for its revealing nature relating to the financing of the United States. (How we get our money, this point by the banking sector (Federal Reserve) to lend to us at Instant interest! Sense instant and forever, DEPT) The statement is as follows: "He has to do something he has either got to get more money from us if he has to change the method of financing. government, and we're going to ensure that he does not change that method. He will not change! "

After Smedley Butler's testimony (and the testimony of others) what should not have happened.

The Congressional committee preliminary report said:

"This committee has no evidence that would in the slightest degree warrant calling before it such men as John W. Davis, Gen.Hugh Johnson, General Harbord, Thomas W. Lamont, Admiral Sims, or Hanford MacNider. (All of the plot)

The committee will not take notice of the names in the record that only hearsay forms.

history I have to dress like Ethel Rosenberg What should I wear? I have to tomorrow for answers cause the test tomorrow

That's a tough one. As she was carried out in 53, go with clothes from the 40s or 50s. Certainly a skirt, heels and a hat. A woman would not have gone without. It was under her knees. This site is pretty good. Http: / / www.threadsintime.net/id41.html If anything rockabilly , that would be a good choice. Something that really shows your waist. A belt. You want your shoulders. Chain would be very appropriate. Look up Donna Reed. Since the process began in 1951, end 40s clothing is probably more appropriate than 50s clothes like poodle skirts, but either would be fine. If she was older (36), sock hop outfits with the folded socks and Mary Janes would have been too young for her. However, fits up would have been perfect. After thinking about his "smart". The short skirt, broad shoulders silhouettes the 1940s were replaced by an hourglass silhouettes law during that time, so either would be appropriate. http://www.squidoo.com/1940sfashion You want to think more feminine and more material. After the depression and war, there was more material that can be purchased. A woman would have been free to patterns used to buy more fabric, with such style elements such as collecting, double-breasted suits and blouses, large collars, decorative bags, skirts with more flair, and often lines, plaids and other patterns that would require more material based on the layout of the pattern pieces. rockabilly is more accurate and some more tight, too risque, but give you some ideas. http://www.pinupgirlclothing.com/streetwear.html
