Things that go bump in the night
Dark clouds gathered over the city on that fateful night. I remember it well because the street lights, which usually came around 9.30 pm in the summer, came at a good hour and half earlier that evening. Night was now with us.
When the rains came and the rains came the thunderous roar of the heavens opening with imploding flashes of light and darkness. Being home alone that night would have been perfect if the weather remained kind, but it felt like tonight was a night where hellfire would let loose on earth. The anger of the storm, that sounded like the massacre havoc in all directions, continued for what seemed like hours on end. In fact, less than half hour had elapsed. Then the lights failed. The blackout and everything went pitch black for now. I searched my way blindly to the kitchen to sift through the drawers in the hope of finding candles or anything else that could help me see. But I found no. There was something in the garage I thought. But the lightning flashed through the cracks of the garage and the rains rasping against the front, sealed with a fear deep in my soul. "Good!" I said to myself in darkness blazon. Silhouettes and moving shadows flooded the front room of this old house like lightning fired more shots. There was only one thing I thought to myself. "Bed", I climbed the wooden staircase. The windows on the upper floors of the house were shutters, and although the ground floor was intermittently lit by occasional flash, I could not see. I seemed to be heading into what looked like a dark cauldron of deeper, deeper madness, as the storm raged on. Without further thought, in a childlike moment of uncertainty and fear, I kept my arm in front of me and walked to my room diving into bed. As I lay still, I listened to the howling of the wind. The whipping rains it brought, beaten against the sides of the house and the front of the garage doors. And then, as soon as the rains had come, she was gone. Now in complete pitch black darkness, I was left to a worse fear, a world of almost total darkness and silence. The old grandfather clock hit the ring once every half past the hour. I was not sure what time it was, but sound of the ticking clock in the downstairs room seemed to grow faster. That and the water droplets from the outside, seemingly trying to compete for the empty silence in the house. Than other sounds emerged as I lay in my bed. I held my breath to make sure I could clearly hear new sounds. They were rustling noises from the garage. Fear gripped me, I could not move. What could it be? Who? What? How? These were questions that began to haunt my mind. Suddenly, the silence was disturbed by the eerie sound of the TV rays in life and light filled the house once more. Voltage and the modern 20th century seemed to blow away the uniqueness of the creepy old house. And finally, I was filled with a feeling of relief. But the sound, what was that? It had stopped. I decided to examine the garage …
