Indian sensitivities in a global fashion map
The global fashion map is expanding. New York, Milan, London and Paris are quickly gaining brothers and sisters. The endless list of fashion whiz kids from countries like Korea, China and India are growing slowly but surely become the next pile of icons. Multicultural sensitivities are accepted as mainstream fashion staple. Asian lines cross to the western slope. Lines are blurring.
Back home in India, we are no longer just the manufacturing guys. We are better than that. Of course we have an unparalleled skill based handicrafts. And of course, our labor costs one quarter, or even less, than our Western counterparts. Our history grandeur of the royal wealth and luxury spells since ages. We match the primary colors with secondary, secondary to tertiary and so on as a six years old with a Masters skill. Before curtains and drapes hits us as a topic in the design school, we never really manage to escape mythological images on calendars, regional costumes and dance sari (remember. .. .. the auntie next door). It is all around us without us and an exciting, in fact, exist.
But we are not alone 'Inspiration India '. We are slightly better than that. Each parade Sabyasachi collection at New York Fashion Week, Manish Arora's flying butterfly dress Paris fashion week, we move an international platform. The unstitched label named India, analyzes sharp eyes of the fashion intelligentsia, we slide, inch-by-inch towards a breakthrough. So now, we can produce and design. For the market, that is, world.
What now? It would be hard and inaccurate to judge the impact of where we come from the things that we do. Yet personal musings would not hurt. Maybe India as a tag attached with Indian designers speak of identity and responsibility, but perhaps speaks of predictability as well. The strength of our roots keep us grounded, but probably still bound. Bound to our non-existent limits. What should an invisible backbone of the aesthetic features remain as an obvious tag for compartmentalization. On any platform of fashion, do we, as good as we expected. Or maybe not. Maybe we are just as good as our strong points. Who determines the standards of discipline and yet there is something really prove? Even though it is likely that a "Sherwani" is not carved in brocade and tweed, it is essentially a jacket. So, it is imperative to look for a jacket or as an overwhelmed Italian Cinderella? Still debatable, thought provoking.
Let's try to see it from a different angle. Could the 'sari' more desirable when it supplies to the red carpet as it is? Or would a Western interpretation of somehow underline the importance of the ensemble? Debatable again. Probably, if born in Greece, the 'sari' would succeed to the tag of 'ethnic' escape. It would be a Other goddess drape evening number, perhaps less cumbersome than couture dresses are!
Certainly, Indian fashion has a long way and there is still a long way to go. But we'll get there. Indian designers will grow from the collective mood board of India. Probably we will grow with more belief in themselves to excel and contribute to fashion, designer clothes and instead of looking for recognition, acceptance and appreciation in a separate model of aesthetic sensibility …

"Evening Falls" For now, a dance in the falling leaves, the colors on the parade of the Siren's Song. Crash, waves on the shores of the mind, not sleep and rise, rise, rise from the ashes of the destroyed mud, again produced in the Muses' pyre made of fire, born of the earth, the daughter of cases allowed rebirth. The ancient mysterious melody, passionate vocals, singing free, leaves a lot to sing through me. Crisp fall air, reflections of a falling, fiery halo, a bed of leaves and Mother's song, the distant, fading crickets chirping and the Harvest Moon rising.
It only lasted until the fourth line – if my heart a beat beaten. The vision of the Phoenix Rising was very strong. She was one of my first contacts – and still is – I've never removed her ♥.
