Amethysts – The Gemstone For Royalty
Throughout history, the purple color associated with royalty. It is not surprising that amethyst has has been a popular gemstone in royalties over the world. Its color and beauty are without rival, and our love with amethyst silver pendants and fashion jewelry remains. There are amethysts in the British crown jewels today. They were popular with Catherine the Great, and a favorite of the Egyptian queen, and royals too. Amethysts are the stones of choice for jewelry pieces like sterling silver pendants, necklaces, bracelets, earrings, bracelets and many other pieces of beautiful and affordable fashion jewelry. A royal Egyptian had their mama covered with amethyst, signifying the importance of this gem in the ancient Egyptian society. Several lesser royals were buried along with amethyst jewels and objects. Most of the gems in ancient Egypt were obtained from miles in and around Aswan. The word "Amethyst" has its origins in the Greek language. There is some debate whether the word comes from 'Amethuskein' or 'Amesthystos. Both words translate roughly to 'no drunk ', leading to the legend that amethyst could protect a cure of drunkenness!
Amethyst is a variety of crystalline silica or quartz, and is one of the most valuable form of quartz. Quartz is generally transparent and almost colorless. However, impurities such as manganese and iron give amethyst its characteristic color. Manganese in particular is responsible for the purple color of amethyst. Amethysts found in a series of shades of purple and lavender. In general, the deep purple color stones are more expensive than the lighter colored ones. Darker specimens also combines well with lighter colored gemstones in designs for cultured pearl necklaces and bracelets. The gems may be defects in color. These defects can occur naturally or can be caused by heat and radiation treatments. In rare cases, The same stone can two different materials – on the one hand, amethyst, yellow citrine and one to the other. The characteristics of the stone can often be linked to the place where it was found. Amethyst rates a 7 on the Mohs hardness scale. This gem can be found as long crystals with a six-sided pyramid at one end.
South America and Africa the largest producers of amethysts today. Brazilian specimens are usually quite large, but from a poor to moderate color. General, African stones are of poorer quality than The specimens from South America. In Canada, amethysts found around Thunder Bay, Ontario, and Digby, Nova Scotia. Sources in the U.S. Maine, Pennsylvania and North Carolina to Montana and Colorado.
