Movie Review – Toy Story 3 (2010)

One of the funniest scenes in Toy Story 3 is a new character Ken. Moreover, it also means that Barbie dressed as Ken. The joke comes from the fact that Ken's clothes are very feminine style, so much so that when Barbie's stilettos are unveiled under her disguise is not the game to give away. Her skeptic just rolls his eyes. Ken carries high-heeled shoes? Sure, that seems about right.
Ken (voiced by Michael Keaton) is a perfect addition to Toy Story 3 for as many different character in this world there is more to him than meets the eye. Take Woody, the cowboy is deeply superficial selfish unflinchingly loyal. Or Rex, a dinosaur, the risk of accidents, each havoc situation, but is always desperate for help. Ken's condition is his unconscious, that supposedly puts him on par with Buzz in Toy Story 1. Although the camp as Christmas, it is totally not aware of themselves. Far as Ken is concerned, he is as masculine as GI Joe, only better dressed.
Character revelation plays an important role in Toy Story 3, while deepening why would the plot, which should be enjoyed as fresh pampering possible. For one thing put back together but mostly new production team, the tone is fast and fun, yet studded with moments of dark pause. First time solo director Lee Unkrich has created an experience true to the unofficial Pixar ethos: not only children's films, films for everyone.
These dark moments are perhaps what make Pixar films most closely related to the beloved Disney toons from the late 1930-40's (NB the Disney / Pixar remember). The climax of Toy Story 3 for the epilogue, again careful not to be a treat, reminiscent of the forest coming life scene in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (1937), that is, we really fear for the safety of those on screen. There is a real feeling that Pixar will do what they need to tell the story they want.
Despite the toys' owner, Andy is now seventeen years old to college, there is still mileage in his emotional transition from child to man. He is not quite ready to say goodbye to take his toys, and by extension his youth. The actor who voices Andy, John Morris, is now twenty five, he grew up with the movies. His performance as his mother expressed Laurie Metcalf, is real and painful for a large part of the public we are sure, an all too familiar farewell to innocence.
If all this sounds a tad heavy for what is essentially a family film, no worry, you'll barely notice of the pathos. Under an inventive crazy if hardly original in scope, childcare 'Prison' break, sentiment is drip fed in typical Pixar fashion agile. So much so that you could best be crying at the end of it all, but be damned if you really know why.
With beautiful animation predictable (although the jump in realism for human characters is something of a shock), Toy Story 3, heat and humor in every scene that makes it not only the best of the trilogy, but the best Pixar movie ever made.
