Make a Timber Frame Wall Panel
Let's start with a complex not a wall, no door or window openings. Can we later to the more difficult boards.
The standard height for a panel is 2.453 meters. This is a standard ceiling height in most homes. It also offers easy plasterboard and plywood / OSB.
A wall is made of wood with dimensions of 38mm deep and 140mm in width and come in an assortment of lengths ranging from 2.1 and then rising to 5.4 in increments of 300mm m long. Because of this example we will use lengths of 4.8 m cls C16 grade timbers.
The wall we want to make is on the facade of the house, no windows or doors. The gable is actually 9.5 million, but then we should break down into a more manageable size. We take the 9.5 m wall and divide by two to finish with two walls of 4.75 m long. This is much easier to handle.
Divide 4.75 by 0.4 (the vertical stud centers) to get 11.87. Around the number to 11 and then add 2 to bringing the number of studs to 13. Now you know how much vertical pillars in the panel.
You may recall that the standard height for a wall panel is 2.453. This is made the vertical bars plus a double tongue plate and a double-header plate.
That means all the ground up two lengths of 4.75 m long wood where you determine the bottom of the beams and then you fit two 4.75 m lengths of wood to the top of the wall panel. You can use two 90mm plummet nails fired from a gun or two 100mm galvanized nails with a hammer.
Now you need to work out what size to cut.
So if we have two digits roof of dimension 38 x 140 mm top and bottom of the wall than anything we have to do is subtract the total height of 152mm from the wall to our vertical stud size, which is 2.301 m getting
Cut 13 studs on my 2301 ensure your long cut perpendicular. Very important to the length and the plumb line to cross a good tight fit.
Space on the ground and place two lengths length of wood on the ground. These will be used to create your panel. Do the ends of the panel from the ground makes it easier to attach the top and bottom plates to the vertical studs.
Now you can start nailing the panel together keeping the edge of the vertical beams to the top of the header and sole plate. Attach the top and bottom of each stud with two nails or 90mm figures plummet nail fired from a gun or 100mm galvanized nails if you use a hammer. Make sure the bolts not rotated in the frame and lead from the top to the bottom wall.
Work your way past the panel fixing studs on 400mm centers. This simply means that leaving a distance of 400mm from the center of one stud to the next.
You have an option to the edge of the bar and just use from the edge to edge. Continue until you've nailed all the vertical bars on the top and bottom plates.
Now you can add plywood or OSB panels to reinforce the frame. This is better done at this stage standing before the panel up, when the work will go faster by setting the plates on the frame when it is on the ground.
Attach the plywood or OSB in each vertical stud at 150mm centers and around the perimeter of each sheet 75mm centers. (An engineer will help you in this area by performing mathematical calculations to give you an exact figure you can follow.)
Consider the panel can be very heavy so make sure you have some extra set of hands or mechanical lifting equipment to help you.
But if you are short of helping You can hand this to the board is fixed and braced.
Voila you have your first timber wall panel. Congratulations.
