On Mints and mint marks
Mint marks are small letters refer to the place where the minting of coins took place. The position of mint mark can usually be found at the back side of coins were beaten for the years 1965 and on the front after the year 1967.
Coins of every U.S. mint branch are recognized by mint marks. This coin brands dating to ancient times in Rome and Greece.
"The Director of the Mint", the "Law of March 3, 1835, lays down rules to classify and distinguish the coins released from every U.S. Mint branch. This core management set accurate standards and the pattern of production and as responsible coinage.
Coins who was beaten on the "Philadelphia mint" earlier than the year 1979 have no mint marks. So it was that year that the dollar was marked with the letter P and other denominations had the same mark thereafter.
All molds for the American coins are produced in the Philadelphia Mint "and prior to sending the coins to their branch mint, coins are marked first with the correct and appropriate mint mark. The precise size and positioning of the coins' mint mark may vary slightly, this is influenced by how deep the punch was impressed and where.
The importance of mint marks:
Collectors can determine the value of a currency but mint mark, date and condition of the study, making the coins and the most important factor in determining the standard value.
Defining the Currency, that pressure on the currency is extremely important in determining the value of the coin, the coin can be beaten in large quantities on a single Mint or in smaller quantities in another hit.
The process of minting:
1. Making metal strips in the correct thickness: Zinc strips are used for pennies, alloy strips composed of nickel (25%) and nickel (75%) for nickel and U.S. dollars, half dollars, dimes, half-dimes are made from a fusion of three coatings of metals, the outermost layer are alloys and center is copper.
2. These strips of metal are then placed in "blanking presses" that are responsible for cutting "round blanks, approximately size of the "done" currency.
3. The blanks are then softened by them through an annealing furnace, through tumbling barrels, and then by rotating cylinders with chemical mixtures for cleaning and metal cleaning.
4. The blanks are then washed and placed in a drying apparatus and then in the "shocking" machines that produce the ridge.
5. The final phase: "creator pressure". Each blank is clasp into position by a collar or ring if hit or hit under great pressure. Producers need approximately40 tons of pressure and the larger coins need. The upper and lower dies "printed simultaneously on both sides of each coin.
Draft:
"The Director of the Mint" choose the design and pattern for U.S. coins, then that is approved by the Secretary of the Treasury, Congress can recommend and suggest a design. The design can not be changed to twenty-five years unless prescribed by Congress.
All emblems of United States coins currently represent beaten former presidents of the United States. President Lincoln on the one-cent, adopted in the year1909, Washington the 25 cents that was beaten first time in 1932, Jefferson to five cents in 1938, Franklin Roosevelt on the dime, introduced in the year1946, the Kennedy half dollar for was first beaten in 1964.
The "Act of 1997" known as the "50 States Quarters Program" supports and makes redesigning of the quarters – The back to prove each of the fifty states emblems. Each year starting in 1999 and 2008, coins honoring five states, with designs created by each state, will be issued in the order or manner in which each state signed the Constitution.
The phrase "In God We Trust" was first used in 1864 on a United States of two cents. Was then seen on the quarter, nickel, half dollar, silver dollar and the $ 10, $ 5 and $ 20 in 1866, in 1909 the medal in 1916 on the dime. Today, all U.S. coins bear the motto.
