Girl Power, the Shakespearean way
Many women in the mid-year 1900 growth – 2000 could be forgiven for feeling that they term 'Girl Power 'coined. It was certainly a time of female assertion seeing the emergence of such a phenomenon asThe Spice Girls, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Lara Croft, Xena Warrior Princess, Sabrina the Teenage Witch and Charlie's Angels (2000 version).
But it was commonplace long before then, even before the days of Margaret Thatcher. The time I'm referring to the 17th century. A time when the great bard himself was praying for the strength of women, one in particular, Queen Elizabeth I.
This is evidenced by Nicholas Rowe, in his Life of Shakespeare (1709), where he reports that the queen was so well pleased with admirable character of Falstaff in the two parts of Henry IV that she commanded him to stay for one more play, and let him in love. "From this decree, The Merry Wives of Windsor was penned.But it does not stop.
By the end of the game Sir John Falstaff gets his deserts in the hands of Mistress Page and Mistress Ford as they humiliate him several times, once they learn that his courtship is a plot to financially benefit. So there you are ladies, "Girl Power" is centuries old. Why not celebrate the fact through the mail from around the world to watch, laugh Shakespeare's comic masterpiece and enjoy.
