Cuba Attractions – Alicia Alonso's Ballet Company
The National Ballet of Cuba is one of the most prestigious dance companies in the world. It was founded in 1948, Alicia Alonso, the main creator and the first digit of the company. In 1950 the National School of Ballet Alicia Alonso added to the professional company. From very beginning, the artistic line followed was based on respect for the romantic and classical traditions, while encouraging the creative work of choreographers who wanted look for the national and contemporary creation in their dances.
With the revolution of 1959, the company was reorganized and became the National Ballet of Cuba, Alicia Alonso was the leading figure and main promoter of dance in Cuba. Already in 1964, other dancers began to fall, particularly a group with time was known as the "four Jewels of Cuban Ballet (Loipa Araujo, Aurora Bosch, Josefina Mendez, Mirta and PLA) who participated in the Varna International Ballet Contest in Bulgaria. From that moment, international critics started talking about "the Cuban ballet school. Towards 1971, an important group of male dancers forward, Jorge Esquivel its leading figure, who over time has allowed the consolidation of a company and a school that has proven one of the few schools to compete with Russian, French and English schools.
Every year, during the fall, the National Ballet of Cuba is organizing the International Ballet Festival of Havana (with performances in different parts of the island), where ballet dancers, choreographers and companies from around the world to participate, turning Havana city in the Mecca of classical dance for a few days. The tireless efforts of Alicia Alonso and the permanent support of cultural institutions have made it possible for the National Ballet of Cuba today proudly shows her very talented dancers capable of accepting an impressive repertoire's most famous classical music combines with the new trends.
For Cubans, ballet is part of their culture and it becomes harder and harder to tickets for the achievements of the company over time. Alicia Alonso's personality is always remembered because her hands and orientations are always present. She has almost all classical and contemporary choreography of the National Ballet and the most popular adaptations of Swan Lake, Giselle, The Nutcracker and Carmen, to name but a few. The National Ballet also world premieres of shows like Don Quixote, choreography by Alicia itself.
If you travel to Havana City, stop for one minute on the baroque Grand Theater of Havana, check out the advertising board and join one of the performances of the NBC, shows that almost all the time are overcrowded, virtuous and always unforgettable. It is almost impossible not to be moved by the love drama of the country girl Giselle, or the presence of the personified kindness which is basking in Odette, the enchanted princess turned into a swan. How can a person not impressed by the demonic character of Odile? How can a person who does not enjoy the evils of child or Suanilda the grace of Kitri and Basil?
