See Asia in multi-racial Singapore

If you plan to vacation in an Asian city, you may want to consider Singapore.

There may be many good reasons to make Singapore your first ever destination in Asia. First, the city is clean, orderly and safe for visitors to move around on their own. Then, if you travel to multiple destinations in Asia, there is a bewildering number of full-service and budget airlines from Singapore Airport. It is also widely spoken in English here.

Above all, Singapore offers the cultures of three ethnic groups: the Chinese, the Malays and Indians Irish. What is more satisfying than seeing three Asian communities in a destination?

Indeed, the descendants of Asian immigrants have made Singapore a melting pot of cultures, where ancient traditions still prevail.

Discover this unique traditions in Singapore by visiting the 'Ethnic enclaves: Chinatown, Kampong Glam and Little India. Each of these great places can be enjoyed at a leisurely stroll.

Chinatown:

When Stamford Raffles founded Singapore land set aside for Chinatown, he dictated that buildings should be made of solid material. Thanks to Raffles and some conservation efforts, Chinatown today still a starting place to admire Singapore shop house architecture.

Many of the original trades, however, been replaced by activities such as more upmarket Chinese restaurants and tea houses. And so good. Opium dens, brothels and death houses (where the dying were sentenced to) used to store a large number of the buildings here. Today you only see photos and mock-ups of these crafts in the Chinatown Heritage Center.

Nevertheless, Chinatown retains a strong sense of "Chinese-ness'.

Chinatown's restaurants used to serve only local and Southern Chinese food. Today, however, there are many restaurants with cuisines from other parts of China. They are led by the first generation immigrants coming from different provinces in China. oldest Chinese temple in Singapore – the vast Thian Hock Keng Temple – is here. Well worth a visit the quaint shops that specialize in Chinese calligraphy, antiques and traditional costumes.

Kampong Glam:

Kampong Glam is so called because the tree gelam – A relative of the eucalyptus – used to disseminate this area.

Today, Singapore Male Irish continue to come together in Kampong Glam, as the Sultan Mosque – the largest mosque Singapore – can be found here.

The Sultan Mosque has a fascinating history. It was rebuilt in 1928 after a major fundraising project. Many of the poorer people who donated to the building apparently attracted funds from collecting and selling used bottles. If go to the mosque, you see the main dome sitting on a black rimmed structure consists entirely of glass bottles. It is not difficult to explain why they are there.

Also worth here are the workshops at the Malay Heritage Center . You can pour one day bring your own pottery or create your own batik. Otherwise, go to nearby Arab Street and get a nice wicker laundry basket, an Afghan carpet or a wonderful piece of silk for the head-turning dress.

Little India:

The main road in Little India is Serangoon Road. To date, remains the focus of the Indian community in Singapore.

A beautiful walk starts near the Tekka Center. Here, prepare your nose for the overwhelming smell of many spices and jasmine garlands, which stores sell in abundance. You will find also a bewildering range of de-husked coconut, lime, clay and similar containers, all used for worship in the temples nearby.

Linger a while and admire the women in their colorful saris blazingly as they haggle with the exhibitors about the prices of groceries. This is as authentic as Singapore gets.

If you've never walked into a Hindu temple, the Sri Kali Amman Temple Veerama Belilios Road is a must-see. Here you will first be impressed by the realistic images of Hindu gods. Inside, Hindu music creates a favorable atmosphere for fans to worship. Visitors may join the proceedings, or simply enjoy the incredibly lifelike statue of the Hindu goddess Kali.

Bollywood music, curries and multi-colored saris will not escape your attention in Little India. If you love to shop and food, you'll be spoiled for choice.

Melting of cultures:

These ethnic areas, of course not mutually exclusive and there is a lot of inter-mingling between ethnic groups of Singapore. For example, you can find a Malay mosque visited standing gloriously in Little India and a large Indian temple right in the heart of Chinatown. All these provide an enchanting visit.
