Golden Temple is the famous shrine of the Sikhs living around the world. Also known bythe name of Harmandir Sahib, Golden Temple is located in the holy city of Amritsar in Punjab. Architectural Brilliance

It was the idea of Guru Arjan Sahib, the fifth Guru of the Sikhs, a central place of worship for Sikhs and he himself designed the architecture the Golden Temple. Its foundation was laid by Hazrat Mir Ji, a Muslim saint from Lahore in December 1588 AD. While the construction of the temple were four gates made that anyone can the holy place without distinction of caste, creed to be guaranteed, religion and sex.

It was built in the center of Sarovar (holy tank) on a 67 square meter platform and is 202 meters long and 21 meters in width. It is a three-story structure and is well appointed. Ceiling of the Temple Built with intricate inlay work and the floor is laid with marble tiles. The dome of the temple is made of gold plating with several small domes. Gates of the temple are made of sheesham wood and ivory inlay work has been exhibited at Darshan Deori ports. It was completed in September 1604 and represents the architectural fusion of Hindu and Muslim.

Harmandir Sahib was invaded many times by an Afghan and other invaders sacrifices of life and each time had to be given by Sikhs to free it from the invaders. Maharaja Ranjit Singh played an important role in the architectural splendor of the Temple of Amritsar after his spiritual capital.

Climate and best time to visit

Summer in the months from May to June, are hot and winters are cold. Monsoons visit Amritsar in July and August. The best time to visit Golden Temple in Amritsar is September to April.
