Pirates Still Running Wild in Grand Cayman
Though the pirates found in Hollywood features may be things of the past, there is a Caribbean island that is keeping of the more entertaining aspects this unique culture alive. For the last 30 years, Grand Cayman and its sister islands have hosted an entire week of pirate-related festivities during the month of November. Highlighted by street parties and heritage festivals, Cayman Pirate Week is one of the most popular island events and a can-miss experience for visiting families. This year, the pirates are in Grand Cayman on November 8 and get off on November 15.
The festivities of Cayman Pirate Week begins with the arrival of the pirates on board replica 17th-century Spanish galleons. To the amusement of locals and tourists, the pirates playfully capture Grand Cayman governor at the port of Georgetown. The symbolic leader Grand Cayman locked up for the week, the pirates going to take over the island and spread their joy from coast to coast. The pirate landing party will take place on Saturday, November 8. The festivities get going at 2 hours with live beach entertainment at Hog Sty Bay, located near the main port of Georgetown. The pirates make their entrance in Georgetown at 3 hours and parade through the city to the delight of local and visiting families. The festival opened Saturday is capped off with a fantastic fireworks and an exciting food and dance festival, been known to migrate through the streets of Georgetown.
The next day, families will have a chance to interact with the pirates of the Children's Fun Festival Fair Day. From 12 am to 4 hours, families can enjoy the friendly atmosphere and have a fair chance to Thurs pirate costumes, romp and play games with the performers worthy of full sea. Also on Sunday, families can participate in the Underwater Treasure Hunt in Grand Cayman West Bay. Organized by the local diving shops, the Underwater Treasure Hunt offers families a great opportunity to experience the thrill of sunken treasure to add to a snorkeling or diving excursion.
From Monday to Saturday (November 10 to 15), visitors can participate in some of the heritage celebrations in Grand Cayman. The excitement begins in the West Bay area of Grand Cayman on Monday. From 11 hours to 2 hours, the pirates will treat the crowd to music, good food and the Caribbean numerous contests and competitions live. On Tuesday, the party moves to the north of the island where visitors will have a chance to incredible scenery while partying with the pirates. The charming village known as Bodden Town is the host of festivities Wednesday, while Thursday sees the party return to the capital Georgetown. At the end of the week, the heritage celebrations visit Grand Cayman's East End on Friday and the Savannah and Newlands areas on Saturday, allowing visitors to experienced a number of lesser-known sites on the island.
At the end of Pirate Week in Grand Cayman, residents and visitors enjoy the cheerful fun of the cardboard Boat Race. Then the pirates as the crowd tried to gather these "criminals" of the high seas banned from the island. Once order is restored and the governor was released from his cell, a huge fireworks display marks the beginning of yet another street festival. Known as the Street Dance Finale, the closing party moves up and down Harbour Drive in George Town until noon on Saturday, November 1915.
During the week visitors can find booths for food and drinks throughout Georgetown, while many of the local shops to close by the fun offering costumes and special souvenirs. Even better for families, getting around Georgetown during the festival is a breeze and almost all of the Cayman Pirate Week events are free.

As host of the only Pirate Week festival in the region, Grand Cayman offers visitors the opportunity experience both an island where pirates once ran wild and characters that have little to see outside the movies.
