Holiday Gifts, Social influences and educational values
A few months ago I was watching public TV's annual drive to raise money. One of the main offers for your pledge was a video of the "Doo Wop" music of the 50s and early 60s. In addition to playing many of my favorite songs they showed old media news clips relating to this as "music of the devil", want it banned because of the damage they were doing to the teenagers. As part of that generation, I like to call a superficial time when most of us did what we were told, and only marginally challenged prevailing expectations. That led me to thinking about the next generation, the baby boomers rebelled and challenged authority, heavy drug use, sex and turned into a recreational activity. By now you may be wondering what this has to do with holiday gifts! Bear with me.
It is an ancient tradition for every generation of teens to participate in a new series of activities which is perceived as dangerous to their development and contemporary social influences on the individual tragedies that take place in that year the debt. The psychologizing of America we have come to expand this concept of social influence way back to prenatal experience! The net result is that parents torment even more than what they do and how it could harm their children. If your daughter is allowed to a Britney Spears doll buying is suspected of increasing the chance that they will either oversexed or developing of an eating disorder. Eating disorders are a serious concern in our society as male violence. But these are complex problems and our ability to predict which child develops any of these problems is virtually nil. For decades, millions of young girls have spent endless hours playing with Barbie dolls and boys are exposed to increasing violence in all forms of media. While we are genuinely concerned about the extent of eating disorders and violence in our society, the facts are that the vast majority of women do not develop an eating disorder and the vast majority of men do not commit violent crimes. The actions of individuals are a complex play of the interaction of temperament, neurochemistry, personal experiences, and social influence. Moreover, major problems during childhood and adolescence years does not mean doom for his adult life. We are very resilient creatures. Need I point out that the seemingly out-of-control behavior of our youth from the mid 60s to mid 70s a generation of free thinkers produced. They created an unprecedented era of prosperity usually based on an endless creation of self-owned businesses combined with exceptional gains in medicine and science which also has included dramatic changes in gender roles and a new melting pot society. That's you I'm talking about – the majority of parents today.
So if you your child to buy holiday presents I urge you to be less affected by the current doomsayers and more influenced by your own values. Too many parents have become confused and overwhelmed by all the advice that people like me send streaming. It is a challenge to separate what really matters. For a long time I have urged parents to believe that what really matters is a close relationship with their children by learning how to enjoy and show their strength, despite how challenging it is with certain children. In addition, I urge parents to know what they believe and what consistency for their children by being willing to take the heat for standing behind their values. Your daughter is a Spears doll, but if you feel the clothes she wants contribute to challenging, to say no. Find some video games cross a line of acceptability because of excessive violence or the values expressed (eg, intolerance). No say.
If these concepts resonate with you then it follows that you need gifts that you find acceptable for your children now and that will be part of a holiday experience that a personal meaning for the family instead of a temporary physical meaning should be. As adults, few remember their youth holiday gifts. Warm holiday memories usually consist of the meaning of traditions that sights and sounds and smells associated with a sense of family closeness. I have the whole holiday Barbie Collection beginning in 1988 and ending the latest Barbie 2009. All 22 Barbies in mint condition and have never been opened! If anyone is interested in purchasing, or knows of a Barbie collector contact, let me know.
Uhhhh ….. Shrooms taste bad – make 'em delicious! This recipe is for one person, just double the amounts used for two persons, etc. 1) 3cups Bring water to boiling temperature to reduce the water is just simmering 2) Chop your mushrooms into small pieces and place in water 3) Leave the mushrooms Simmer for about 15 minutes, dropping 3-4 tea bags into water about 10 minutes mark. Stir frequently. 4) with a coffee filter or tea strainer to filter the chopped mushrooms in a large head. To ensure you get all of the remaining psilocybin and psilocin mushrooms, squeze them from the filter / strainer and collect all the water in the cup.
