King Kelly and the Boston strong boy on track and Vaudeville
Before there was MTV, there was vaudeville.
Before there were jet fighters price railways.
And before there was Michael Jordan and Brett Favre there were Michael Kelly, aka "King Kelly and John L. Sullivan, aka" Boston strong boy. "
Baseball scholars consider Michael Kelly, a catcher in the National League from 1878 to 1886, to Major League Baseball's first superstar with a national following. In a day and age whre most American workers earned less than $ 1,000, Kelly earned an incredible $ 5000 at the height of his playing days. Kelly's salary was compared to John L. Sullivan 'profit of $ 50,000 in the mid 1880s. John L. outearned even Chester Arthur, President of the United States, who earned $ 25,000 per year.
King Kelly and the strong Boston boy legends were spread throughout the country because they were able to get to any point in the nation by rail. From 1870 to 1880 the mileage of tracks has almost doubled from 54,000 to 93,000. Twenty-two lines converged in Chicago, Illinois, linking the country off the coast. Kelly and Sullivan used to achieve these coaches conviently and meet fans from New York City to San Francisco. Their success was twice as great because they're both Irish Catholics and the sons of immigrants who had settled in the urban north. Their ability to cross ethnic and religious barriers set the template for all popular culture heroes to follow in their footsteps.
Michael Kelly and John L. Sullivan may have their popularity outside the diamond and the ring by performing the vaudeville circuits that were strung across the country at the end of the nineteenth century. Each city a population of over 10,000 would have a theater that was to breed popular acts at the moment. John L. Sullivabn, after drinking his way through a fortune of two million U.S. dollars, was a lecturer on the vaudeville circuit, lectures about the evils of liquor. He would.
