I'm not Ken and Barbie She's not … Thank God
Please tell me you know better than to believe what the media tells you what the opposite sex is attracted. I mean, not all that bullshit you are fed on a constant basis to believe … are you doing?
Oh, I know. It is easy to get brainwashed by the incentives to lose weight, get the bust size, regrowth of hair, get rid of the hair, etc., etc., etc. Somewhere along the line, some of us even began to believe that women have six-pack abs and biceps are tight (as if men are attracted to male characteristics). Taller, blonder, darker, slimmer, lighter, darker, curvier, straighter, bigger, faster, more, more, more.
Last weekend Emily and I were in California, and decided to check out Beverly Hills. Well, does his 90210 hype in every way. So much money and much frustration packed into a (expensive) package. We saw a woman who literally had undergone so much plastic surgery she had a shadow of who they are. And its uncertainty was written all over her face. Here was a woman in the world had every resource available to her, made use of all and was still categorically miserable.
The sad irony of all this is that the vast majority of us do not even find in the media representation of "beauty" appealing … at least not when it comes to finding a partner. In fact, despite the steady message of perceived inadequacy we all fed, I happened upon a great achievement: A surprising number of us (and maybe even you) tend to be particularly attracted to someone the opposite sex version of who we are.
And here's a newsflash: I am not a Ken doll.
And guess what? I do not "Barbie" sexually attractive in the least.
Let me tell you what I mean. Forget the "Miss America" types. Give me a petite little brunette soaked in "cute". I wish I could pinch cheeks. Forget the long flowing "Goldilocks" and give me that spicy, spiky short hair. Drop plans for a "boob job" and keep it proportional. And for heaven's sake, eat something. I want someone I can cuddle. OK … pierce the navel and I must admit that completes a perfect female package. That and the manicure / pedicure combo. Bright pink, please. Oh yeah.
And in return, I will the best man I know how to be, and will take care of myself in a manner that demonstrates self-respect. By doing this, I earn what I want.
And what I want is not necessarily what the media is telling me I should want. But what a great feeling of freedom to the courage to find a partner that meets my stringent specifications, instead of someone else.
So what do you think? The woman that I described above posters of Sean Astin had on her wall when she was younger instead of Matt Dillon. Now she hosts podcasts with me. Go figure.
