Ken Kelly

Harry Stephen Keeler
Biography
Born in Chicago in 1890, Keeler spent his childhood only in this city, who was so loved by the author that a large number of his works took place in and around it. In many of his novels, Keeler refers to Chicago as "the London of the West." The term is explained in the opening of the Thieves' Nights (1929): "… There were apparently the same vendors selling the same goods … … here again the confusion, the babble of tongues of many countries, the restless, jostling crowd of a thousand faces and racial characteristics cabinets, and last but not least, here at Maxwell and Halsted streets, Chicago, the same dirty, torn fly paper, and confusion that graces the intersection of Middlesex and Whitechapel High streets far around the world. "Other locations Keeler novels include New Orleans and New York. In his later works, Keeler institutions are often more general settings, such as Big River, or a city where all the buildings and streets are either unnamed or fictional. Keeler is known that a visit to London at least once, but his occasional depictions of the British characters are consistently unreliable.
Early adulthood
Keeler's mother several times over was a widow who operated a boarding house popular with theatrical performers. Starts at about sixteen years, Keeler pumped a steady stream of original short stories and series that were subsequently published in many small pulp magazines of the day. He studied at the Armour Institute (now the Illinois Institute of Technology), graduating with a degree in electrical engineering.
When Keeler was about twenty, his mother committed him to a mental asylum for unknown reasons, thereby promoting its interest in the insane, asylums and the healthy, who had been committed in such places, as a lifelong violent antipathy towards the psychiatric profession.
After graduation, he a job as an electrician in a steel mill, working by day and writing at night. It was at this time that Keeler his future wife, Hazel Goodwin, whom he married in 1919 met.
With EP Dutton
Keeler first four novels were originally published in England by Hutchinson, starting in 1924, with the voice of the Seven Sparrows (although eight of his earliest works first appeared in magazines such as Pulp Fiction and Top Notch New Complete). Beginning in 1927, took Dutton Keeler novels published in the U.S.. Between 1927 and 1942, Dutton was going to release 37 novels by Keeler. In the United Kingdom, the publication of Keeler novels, sometimes with a changed title and reworked prose, fell by Ward Lock, who went to publish 48 novels Keeler from 1929 to 1953. The Voice of the Seven Sparrows introduced audiences around the world too complex "webwork" Keeler story lines with wild improbable coincidences in the story and sometimes sheerly amazing conclusions. Unfortunately, Keeler complex, labyrinthine tales often alienated his intended readership.
Keeler relations by Dutton grew increasingly erratic and strained as his novels became longer and correspondingly less and less popular. His 1941 novel The Peacock Fan seems to be a dig at the Dutton's take disguised by a few silly characters, and in 1942 after releasing the book with orange leaves at last he was dumped by Dutton, although Ward Lock continued to issue books in the United Kingdom until 1953.
Because of its initial popularity with Dutton, but Keeler began some notoriety in the mid-1930 to get as a supplier of new and original stories. His popularity reached a climax when his book Sing Sing Nights was used to "suggest" two different low-budget mystery / adventure movies, Sing Sing Nights (Gram Mona Pictures, 1933) and the mysterious Mr. Wong (Mona Gram, 1935), the last of which starred screen legend Bela Lugosi. During this period, Keeler worked as an editor for Ten Story Book, a popular pulp magazine short stories that photographs of nude and scantily clad young women. Keeler proceeded to fill the spaces between the stories with his own special brand of humor, and illustrations of his wife. (He often advertise his own books.)
Later years: Phoenix Press
Despite its popularity, Keeler is fiction and writing style became increasingly bizarre, often replacing laborious long diatribes and dialogues between the characters for the action or plot. These events led his American publisher, Dutton, to make him fall in 1942. The following eleven years were difficult for Keeler and his writing drifted even further outside the norm, and short stories written by his wife (a moderate successful writer himself) were increasingly found in his novels. Keeler usually padded the length of his novels with the following device: Its protagonist was a magazine or find a book, would randomly open and find a story. At this point, Keeler novel stopping dead in his tracks and he adds the full verbatim text of one of the short stories his wife, this is the story of his novel protagonist was reading. At the end of the story, the novel would continue where it left off, a number of pages closer its contractual minimum number of words. These stories-in-the-novel is usually only a few scraps of information relevant for the novel in which she appeared included.
Keeler novels were picked up by Phoenix Press publisher rental library, known in the industry as the "last stop on the publication of the bus." In 1953, British publishers Ward Lock Keeler & Co. printed their final novel, thus forcing the writer to pen his stories exclusively for an overseas market with stories often translated for publication in Spain and Portugal.
Hazel was deceased in 1960. Pressing forward, Keeler remarried in 1963 (until his single secretary Thelma Rinaldo), who rejuvenated his spirit to write. Unfortunately, many of the Keeler new stories written by this time was not published, including the relatively infamous The Scarlet Mummy. Keeler died four years later in 1967, leaving a legacy of creativity for his fans worldwide.
In 2005, The Collins Library (an imprint of McSweeney's) reissued Keeler's 1934 classic, The Riddle Traveling from the skull, a project pursued by many a writer and editor Paul Collins.
Writing trademarks
Most of Keeler novels feature a "webwork plot. "This can be defined as a plot that encompasses many strands or threads (each thread that a significant character or object), which intersect in the complex causal interactions. A novel webwork generally ends with a surprise revelation that these interactions clarified retrospectively. According to Keeler's 1927 series of articles on the plot theory, "The Mechanics (and kinematics) of Web-Work Plot Construction ", a webwork plot is usually built around a sequence in which the protagonist cuts at least four other components, one after the other, and each of these meetings the following causes. Keeler never claimed to have invented the webwork plot, but only to its theoretician and practitioner.
Keeler followed a written procedure on his own, he would often write a great script, maybe twice the required length. He was then down to size, removing unnecessary subplots and incidents. The removed material (which he called "the Chunk") would sit around until Keeler wrote another script to use that could lead to another cutting procedure, and another "Chunk." In his book Thieves' Nights, the hero reads a book about two other men telling stories: a recording device within a framing device. In another book, Keeler and his wife up as characters in a story.
Keeler was also a large file of newspaper clippings of unusual stories and incidents. He is famous for its pasted it into the rough outlines of his novels, adding notes as "this place …."
Keeler is known for the MacGuffin-like insertion of skulls in almost all his stories. Although many lots revolved around a skull or the use of a crime or a ritual, skulls others recommended only as a secondary distractions, including a case where a human skull was used as a paperweight on the desk of a police detective.
Several of Keeler novels made to a (fictional) book titled The Way Out, which apparently a tome of ancient Eastern wisdom. The significance of the non-existent Way Out in the universe of Keeler's equals the role of the Necronomicon in HP Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos.
Impact and Parallels
Keeler has influenced science fiction writers like Neil Gaiman, Futurama producer Ken Keeler (no relation), Ken Keeler says in the DVD commentary for "Time Keeps on Slippin 'that the story" Strange Romance "from the book Y. Cheung, Business Detective was an inspiration for the episode. In the late 1930s, the British writer John Russell Fearn Keeler gave credit to for inspiring his experiments with webwork plots in pulp SF stories.
Writer Jack Woodford wrote the article Incredible Tale: The True Story of Harry Stephen Keeler's Literary Rise on Keeler.
Keeler technique is webwork anticipates the so-called hysterical realism of later writers like Thomas Pynchon.
Films that show similarities probably ignorant of the work include Keeler Murder Story (1989), in which Christopher Lee plays a Keeler-like character, who keeps a large collection of newspaper clippings as part of his "Hope Willard Technique" for writing novels are very similar to Keeler's "webwork novel technique. R. Kelly 's music video series Trapped in the Closet shows some parallels Keeler's style.
