I arrived at the dock in Souris not knowing what to expect. Even with my research and that it remained a mystery, despite the heard stories, I had never met anyone who actually had been. Basque fishermen were touring the archipelago to hunt "sea cows" before Columbus discovered America but then, as now, the best kept secrets shown on maritime charts. The Magdalen Islands (Iles de la Madeleine) is one of those rare "in" places to ride, but few have heard of them. Located in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, about 134 miles (215 km) east of the Gaspé, 65 miles (105 km) north of Prince Edward Island and 60 miles (95 km) west of Cape Breton, the "Maggie" considered the northernmost part of the Appalachian Mountains, and belonging to the province of Quebec. Authoritative sources can not even agree on the size of their land (somewhere between 77 and 88 square miles), but there are seven inhabited islands and all but one are linked by a single highway. Trimmed in contrasting or complementary colors, each different from its neighbors, it is a photographer dream. Route 199 is only 54.6 miles (88 km) long and, despite a few sharp corners, it makes no technical challenges. Its entire length, from the port of La Grave to the port in Grande Entree, can easily be driven in one hour and half. The total mileage of all roads, both paved and gravel on the archipelago is less than 186 miles (300 km). However, all the time, effort and cost required only to me this road proves to be justified.
A 12-mile segment of Route 199 runs along North Dune and very little Seal Point Island (Ile de la Pointe aux Loups-Loup-marin, the local name for seal). It's a long, straight stretch of highway. Electric poles line both sides of the road, converging in the distance, while heatwaves Add a surreal image on the already soft undulations of an asphalt built on a foundation of loose sand. Normally I do not care for long, straight roads, but this is exceptional. Here, the ocean lines on both sides of the highway only to disappear behind a long ridge of grass-anchored sand. In other places the powdery sand of transverse dune crest and spill over the road on his shoulders, while asphalt blue herons stride through the lush salt marshes on the other side of the highway. I enjoy riding through the dunes and it offers more miles, more dunes, less traffic and only a small fraction of the number of people visit the Cape Cod National Seashore.
I pass one of the top-ranked beaches in the world. Sparks around East Point National Wildlife Reserve, East Point Beach and Grande-Échouerie (A echouerie where walruses, or "sea cows," once pulled ashore to sun themselves) combine to provide 13 continuous miles (22 km) of beautiful sandy beach. With the exception of two short pieces on both sides, this rare strip of sand left. I could run naked on many of the islands '196 miles of pristine beaches and not face a single person. The bicycle can be parked anywhere, because to steal a motorcycle is just not feasible if the only way out is by ferry.
The highway ends at the wharf in Grande-Entrée. Nowadays most of the fishing fleet is docked and the boutiques and restaurants seem to be moderately busy. I take some pictures, but since I've managed to fewer than 30 miles to cover this morning, I want to keep riding. La Grave is on the other side of the road, so pulling a U-turn, I go in the opposite direction.
The southern end of Route 199 ends at another fishing pier, although the island of Albert's Harbor (Ile du Havre-Aubert) continues for many kilometers as Sandy Hook, a long, thin dune that extends in the direction of Entry Island. The village of La Grave was the first settlement in the islands, founded in 1755 by refugees escaping the Acadian Deportation (Le Grand Derangement) by the British in Nova Scotia (others sought refuge in Louisiana Cajun culture and created).
The village of La Grave has become a artist community. His little cedar-shingled fishing sheds dating from the 19th and early 20th centuries, but instead of housing lobster traps, they turned into little boutiques and galleries that the work of local artists and craftsmen function. Cafe De La Grave in the old general store, and the interior with its funky chairs and tables wrong and decorated with original art, this local hangout. It is the place for the local specialty, a seafood pie called for "pot-and-pot."
In the city of L'Etang-du-Nord a cluster of colorful clapboard-sided boutiques face the sea. The yellow appears Café la Côte, where salt cod pizza is the specialty of the house. From here the angular hulk of Duke of Connaught can be seen resting against the rocks of Savage Head (Cap a furious). Given the same rusty red color as the rocks, I can not find out what it is and ask. Locals joke that the work of a contemporary metal sculptor.
It turns out, a large percentage of the residents are direct descendants survivors of more than 400 shipwrecks, and many buildings on these islands were constructed from salvaged ship timbers. An example is the church of St. Pierre in Lavernière; It also has the distinction of being the second-largest wooden church in North America.
Fishing is the mainstay of the local economy. More than 2 million pounds per year lobsters are harvested, as well as fresh scallops, blue mussels, clams, snow crab and a variety of fish. Smoking of fish is an island tradition and a few old-style smokers (Baraque) made hay bales are used by farmers. Fumoir d'Antan on Ile du Havre aux Maisons has an excellent small museum in the original smokehouse. This year they are licensed 60,000 pounds of herring – they also smoke mackerel, eel and scallops – and three quarters of this will be sold on the islands. I buy home vacuum packaging and a pair of The "snack packs" to bring munch on while driving – this probably explains why my tank bag a little fishy smell.
Tonight's accommodation Auberge Salicorne in La Grande-Entree, and kicking back with a foaming mug of local brew and munching on seal products sausage I listened to the other side of the seal hunt controversy and local history. Prior to the establishment of Route 199 in 1956, had Madelinots boat from island to island. This created a very diverse communities that are unique to their specific piece of land. Now this is clearly entering the Island, the only inhabited one is not connected by road. There is a local ferry, but I have chosen to The six miles (10 km) trip across open water to make a rubber boat (Zodiac) operated by Excursions en mer.
After watching around the island and the breeding grounds of local seabirds, including the Razorbill Auk, stayed a few hours to walk to Big Hill for a panoramic view over the archipelago.
It's finally time to islands leave and I get the Ducati in the belly of the Vacancier for the journey of the St. Lawrence River to Montreal. Despite their small size, four days in the islands was not long enough to take advantage of all they have to offer and I never tired of back and forth on the same road. I should be happy with this but it does offer a reason for me to return Iles de la Madeleine next year.

Pujols given another five years of production will join them. Papi could get in it due to popularity (stranger things have happened). Howard Fielder and needs 10 + seasons of 35-40 home runs and 100 + RBI's to even deserve attention ….. they are not Gold Glover. Based on the defense Griffey and A-Rod his lead the rest of the Bonds are # 3 and # 4 Pujols – the others are boys 1B/DH/OF without fuss.
