Learning to sail the USA way
The syllabus can be easily divided into two parts. The Keelboat Sailing Certification Program consists of seven stages, while small Sailboat Program contains two stages.
The Basic Small Sailboat standard requires no previous experience or qualifications. It is the first course in the small boat sailing program. Students must demonstrate a theoretical knowledge of the names and functions of different parts of a boat, sailing along with common terms, the sail and its components, International regulations for preventing collisions at sea and on inland waterways and hey, a basic knowledge of safety procedures to show. On the practical side, they show that they tread water for 5 minutes and swim 100 meters, gear, and launch the boat, get set and trim the sails, sailing both upwind and downwind, tacking and jibing, correct application the rules of the road, to recover a man overboard, recovering from capsizing, accept and pass a tow rope, tie four knots within a specific period of time. After completion he or she will be able to sail a centerboard or Catamaran sailboat in light to moderate wind and sea conditions in familiar waters.
The first course in the Keelboat Sailing Certification Program known as Basic Keelboat. No experience or qualifications required. Completing the course will be required to demonstrate that they put a name and describe the operation various parts of a boat including the hull, keel, bow and stern deck. The components of both the running and standing rigging. The different sails, including the names part of a sail – on foot, leech, luff, head, neck and clew. The various spars, mast and boom. They will be familiar with sailing terminology used to describe various maneuvers, including jibing and coming over. Students understand the points of sail pulled close, reaching or running. They will understand the basics of collision avoidance, including rules of the road. They will demonstrate that they are familiar with the regulations regarding registration and identification, a good removal of waste, to notify in case of an accident and what safety equipment is required by law to carry out a ship and how it is used. They will be able to knowledge of buoys to show the participants will know how a boat anchor and describe the choice of anchors and their attributes and shortcomings. On the practical side, they must demonstrate sail handling skills, they will back the power at the helm, including mooring, sailing upwind well and with a successful tack and jibe the wind. They will complete a successful man overboard recovery. They will show they know how to tie different knots 6 and understand their various uses. After completing the course, Students are able to take a boat of about 20 meters in length in moderate wind sailing in familiar waters.
The second phase is called Basic Coastal Cruising and students have prior keep the basic keelboat certificate the company of this course. The course focuses on safety on board including equipment and procedures. An understanding of fire prevention and control requires is. Students are required to have a knowledge of first aid and treatment of hypothermia to show. Basic meteorology is considered, and students must demonstrate an understanding of navigation forecasts. A good understanding of the relationship between the skipper and crew and the respective roles of each required. Students should be able types of soil, dangers, buoys, beacons and lights; to basic Chartwork including depth to perform. The practical side of this course deals with the boat handling under power and sail, man overboard recovery, the different points of sail, reefing and heaving to, docking, mooring and single button to work. Then she laid the sailor should be safe to cruise in regional waters in a sailboat to 30 meters in length, in moderate winds and rough seas.
Bare Catamaran Trailer Standard, this course is the second in the small boat Sailing Program. It can be taught as part of or following the Basic Coastal Cruising course. Completion of the Basic keelboat is a prerequisite before taking this course. On the theory side, students should be able identify and name the different parts of a multihull which are not found on a monohull, including the various wings decks, hulls, cross arms, three point harness, bridle lines, safety nets, seagull and dolphin strikers. They will be aware of the advantages and disadvantages of multihulls including, performance, comfort and safety danger of capsizing. On the practical side of the sailor will demonstrate how cast of the wharf and leave with at least two different directions relative to the arc and back and mooring, pick up a buoy, maneuvering in a confined space, backwards, recovering a man overboard, the various points of sail, tacking and jibing, sailing a compass course in 10 degrees. They will anchor in the following ways, windlass and bow with a bridle and some strong line to the shore. When completed, sailors are able to sail safely in the local and regional waters as skipper and crew on a multihull yacht for additional 30 meters in length, in moderate wind and sea conditions.
Bareboat Chartering is the next phase. Participants is expected that the Basic Coastal Cruising Certificate to commit before this course. The theory part includes the preparation of the crew and the boat for one week cruise including the preparation of a passage plan. Meteorology has been taken, including a look at fog and onshore and offshore winds. Seamanship is examined and students need to know what action is needed if the engine fails, they need to know how the boat bow and stern anchor. On the practical side of the student will be able to daily and weekly maintenance tasks, the boat under power to maneuver in a confined space, grab a buoy, the VHF radio. The following navigation skills are required, plotting a course and establishing the compass course and calculate an estimated time of arrival. Establishing a fix using visual bearing. Use a graph to the pilot of the boat in an unknown harbor. Students must obtain and interpret a shipping forecast. When they finished the individual can act as skipper of a boat to sail 50 meters in length per day in coastal waters.
The next stage is known as short sea shipping. This is only a theoretical course and no experience or knowledge is required. Students are required to demonstrate knowledge of the various state and federal regulations relating to sailing. They must understand how to use navigational tools including both wheel and hand with compasses, binoculars, depth sounder, log, parallel rule and dividers. Participants must display an understanding of tide tables and its use in the treatment of secondary ports. They should be able to set the bearings and compass courses between compass, magnetic and true plot a dead reckoning position, understand the impact of current and leeway in estimating a position and plot a position two or more bearings, and to establish a running a course and distance. Finally, they will need a knowledge of buoys and lights to show.
The Cruising Catamaran course deals exclusively with multihull sailing and concentrates on the differences a sailor is in contrast to monohull sailing. Participants should have completed the Bareboat Chartering stage. On the theory side, students should be able to identify and name the different parts of a multihull which are not found on a monohull, including the various wing decks, hulls, cross arm, three-point harness, bridle lines, safety nets, seagull and dolphin strikers. They will be aware of the advantages and disadvantages of multihulls with including, performance, comfort, safety and the danger of capsizing. On the practical side of the sailor will demonstrate how to cast and let the quay by at least two different directions relative to the arc and back and mooring pick up a buoy, maneuvering in a confined space, back on board to recover from a man, the various points sails, tack , and jibe, sailing a compass course within 10 degrees. They will be anchored on the following, two anchors from the bow and stern anchor winch and bridle, with a single arc strict line to the coast and look for permanent mooring. Upon completion of the person can skipper a catamaran sailboat to 50 feet in length per day in coastal waters.
Advanced Cruising follows Coastal areas and participants must have completed both the Bareboat Chartering and Coastal Navigation phases. Students will be asked to an extensive knowledge of the theory to display of sailing, a good understanding of meteorology, including the various cloud formations and weather that is expected with each. They will understand the needs of heavy weather sailing, necessary sail changes and the use of proper safety equipment and procedures. They will be able to describe: how do half swinging anchor, how to recover a anchor polluted, how a trip to an anchor buoy line and decrease when and how an anchor watch. They will describe how to tow or be towed. They will have a knowledge of distress signals. Students properly describe the actions required in the following emergencies: a dismasting, running aground on a lee shore and engine failure. Students will be able to perform maintenance and repairs to the engine. On the water, students should: sailing at all points of the wind and tack and jibe in a wind of at least 15 knots, compass to navigate a course within 10 degrees, perform a man overboard recovery in the darkness. They will demonstrate their ability to set up, including a sail jibe, deaf and grab a spinnaker. And finally they will are a navigation system offers 20 miles, both day and night. When completed, a person can skipper a yacht up to 50 meters in length, both during day and night coastal waters, regardless of the weather and sea conditions.
The next phase is called Celestial Navigation. The course is theory based and requires no previous experience or qualifications. The student should be able to demonstrate the celestial navigation is needed to navigate a sailboat on an offshore passage. The successful student has demonstrated its ability to: Set Longitude in time and standard time and GMT time zone. They will be able to calculate the time zone given latitude, the chronometer error data from a previous error and the daily rate, the time of meridian passage of the Sun and the calculation of the boat latitude of the observed meridian altitude of the sun, the times of sunrise, sunset and dusk, plot celestial lines of position on a Mercator projection or on a universal plotting sheet and the true bearing of a low altitude celestial body to determine the error and deviation of the compass. The student will be able to use the corrections for index error, dip of the horizon and the total correction to sextant altitude of the sun, the stars turn, planets and moon true heights, determine the latitude in the dusk through the Pole Star and the approximate azimuths and altitudes of the navigational stars and planets in the twilight. In addition they are able will be solving the navigational triangle using a navigation table and progress of the LOP obtained from a sun sight to another LOP obtained from the Sun at a later time and find the boat's position using a running fix (Sun-run-sun).
This celestial theory can be put into practice during the Offshore Passage of course. Participants should be certified the Advanced Coastal Cruising level. The student will plan a passage on either the Pacific or North Atlantic using Great Circle Plotting Climatic charts and graphs. They must demonstrate an understanding of the essential factors to be considered when selecting a vessel for an offshore ocean passage of at least 1000 miles under the hull construction and appearance, keel, rigging and rudder type, fuel and water capacity. They have a list of tools and components needed for such a trip. They to victual the boat for four people at the check for seven days. They have a list of items to be transported in the first aid kit and describe basic treatments injuries and diseases may occur together with identifying a source of mare advanced medical information, while on passage. She prepares a watch keeping system and defines the duties of the crew both on and off watch. They will design a maintenance plan to cover: bilges, electronic equipment, fuel systems, hatches, galley equipment, rigging, sea safety valves, steering and the water. They describe the procedures to be implemented in the following emergencies: abandon ship, dismasting, onboard fire, lightning, man overboard. An extensive knowledge of international rules for preventing collisions at sea must be demonstrated. When the course is completed, the sailor cans skipper a sailing ship on offshore passages in any weather.
