Do You have to worry about BPA in plastic bottles?
A recent study released by the Journal of the American Medical Association raises concerns about a chemical bisphenol A (BPA) in plastic bottles, cans and several containers of food, including all those eco-friendly reusable water bottles, we are all carrying around.
Based on a health survey, the study found that those who had higher amounts of BPA in their urine were more likely to sign with heart disease and diabetes. Of course the study does not provide information that says that BPA causes these conditions, and the study authors agree that you can not exclude the possibility that people who have heart disease or diabetes are more susceptible to BPA appeared in their samples.
True to form NBC's Today Show aired a report earlier this year that glossed the facts and pointed to a terrible danger – needlessly alarming millions of us who feed our children from clear plastic baby bottles and Sippy Cups, who tried not to reduce the pollution of the world add by switching to reusable water bottles.
The story had us turning on our plastic containers in search of numbers (Resin ID codes # 3, # 6 and # 7), shows that have nothing to do with a product made from BPA, the chemical bad guy of the piece.
The Consumer Alert "(incorrectly) said:
– There is no safe level of BPA, when in fact the chemical has been studied for many years and declared safe, especially given the fact that the levels we take thousands of times lower than the rats that were studied.
– Plastics with BPA are not safe in the microwave, but a Dutch study that focused on BPA migration after microwave no evidence of any such thing.
– Codes on the bottom of a container can tell you whether it is safe. Wrong! This resin ID codes intended to help with recycling facilities, and have nothing to do with identifying bottles that have BPA. Any item intended to be used for food must comply with heavy FDA guidelines are ever allowed on the market.
All this flies in the face of 40 years of science, according to a statement released by the American Chemistry Council Today a few days after the segment aired. Another thoughtful piece by Gilbert Ross, MD of the American Council on Science and Health (who also appeared briefly in the report) was and called out the Today report what it is – Junk Science.
Not only that, the in-studio guest, Dr. Leo Trasande of Mount Sinai Medical Center had ample time during the six-minute segment to get his message across, while Dr. Ross had only 6 seconds to tell viewers that "the toxic effects on rats were made on thousands of times higher than we are exposed to the environment. "
Not so "fair and balanced" now is it?
The media mis-information is the result of a report by the National Toxicology Program, which was a follow-up of a panel of expert examination in 2007. Both the expert panel and the NAP Reports concluded at the same low interest rate, or negligible concern for adults and some care for infants and children.
"This is the third lowest ranking on NTP's five scale. But the media has mischaracterized the findings indicate a new direction is given by the NTP on the use of BPA. That's right, "says Sharon Kneiss, vice president of products division of the American Chemistry Council (ACC).
Until the science is chosen, there is no way to tell if a bottle you use is made with BPA. If you're particularly worried, you may want to prevent the earth or microwave food or beverages in plastic containers for more research on the leaking the chemical can be completed.
In the meantime, the FDA's scientific panel displays with half an opinion on the safety of BPA in plastic bottles and other containers, Although the Agency has confidence in his own research, more carefully designed and thoroughly than the human studies that seem to be making all care.
