What is 72 hours a Kit?
Past experience it usually takes about 72 hours after a disaster for the area to help organizations set up to achieve and get organized to handle the needs of the emergency. It is therefore important that we have at hand, and quick access, a kit that will help us survive the first hours and days. This is usually indicated by a 3-day or 72-Hour Emergency Kit.
Remember 72 hours a kit for the purpose of survival. It may not have all the luxuries we would sometimes like, but it must have the items needed. Therefore, a simple backpack is ideal. It will not allow you to pack more than you can bear, but if you plan are good, there is enough room for the necessary items to survive.
Each person should have his or her own kit. It is possible that family members could get separated, and each member must personally some supplies with them. When walking, a child would not be able to very much for a very long period of time to wear, but a few items that need them would help to survive.
When making your emergency preparations, there are ten areas to be considered. Be careful that you do not plan much in some areas and ignore other areas. All are necessary for survival.
FOOD
There are many alternative choices when we consider food. A variety of preparations are important. It is important that food can be had for a long time without refrigeration. Choose foods that require minimal cooking. Some good choices are bouillon cubes, powdered drinks (hot chocolate, cider), dried fruits and nuts, jerky, and candy to suck on. These kinds of foods give energy, food, and help to to boost morale.
WATER
Water can be stored in the house in various container sizes, but small 1 or 2-liter containers for carrying are very important. 2 liters bottles of pop are ideal. Collapsible containers are useful for storing in a container because they can be folded when empty. Large clear plastic bags are very useful in collecting water from dew or rain. Water can be boiled, distilled or purified with purification tablets or a water purification kit. All these methods must be included in your kit.
Shelter & HEAT
There are many products available in this area. A tube tent is small enough to fit in a pack and very versatile. It is basically a ground cloth and tie ropes which can easily be made into a shelter, used as a ground sheet or a cover to keep a dry suit. Emergency "space" sleeping bags and blankets and ponchos emergencies are also very good to the body heat and keep wet weather out. These are lightweight and take up little space in a kit.
COOKING
With a bag of charcoal and a Dutch oven, you can heat and cook just about anything. But they are bulky and charcoal to be used outside where there is proper ventilation. There are different sizes of Sterno or instant heat available. A rack to sit over a can of Sterno takes up very little space and can heat water, soup, and cook simple meals. Waterproof matches, fire lighters, disposable lighters, and compressed fuel tablets are just a few items that can be very useful.
LIGHT
There are many types and sizes of oil lamps are available in our homes for when we lose electricity. These are probably the safest and easiest maintenance. In a suit Flashlight (keep the batteries from the flashlight will last longer) is an essential item. There are also special torches flashlight no batteries or radio that can run off multiple sources for power necessary, including solar energy and started manually.
COMMUNICATIONS
This is often an area that we forgot to include in our planning. There are a few simple items that can be very useful. A whistle can be blown with less energy and more than your voice heard. Also a mirror is perfect for signaling for help. A radio with multiple potential sources for power is also very important to know what is happening, where the authorities are asking people to go or what to do.
HYGIENE & SANITATION
There is nothing better than a few simple hygiene products such as a comb, toothbrush, razor or shampoo to strengthen morale. Small versions of these items fit easily in one package. A kind of "Porta potty is a must.
FIRST AID
Of course a first aid kit is a must for any emergency. Basic items and a simple first aid instruction sheet must be included in each kit.
APPAREL & Personal Items
A change of clothes, especially additional socks, underwear and a jacket should be added to your kit. A hat, gloves and boots would also be very useful. Other personal items, such as female items, diapers, medications, extra eyeglasses or sunglasses, "comfort toys, books, writing materials, and card games are necessary and very helpful.
IMPORTANT PAPERS & MONEY
It is very important to a set of copies of all your important papers, such as insurance and other legal documents, wills, birth certificates, marriage certificate, bank account numbers, family pictures and other documents. If someone becomes separated, it is very useful to give the authorities a recent photograph of who you are looking for. Make sure you have some money in your kit, both small changes and larger amounts to be included.
Do not forget a few items need to be rotated. It may a good habit once a year when you change your clocks to summer time, and change the batteries in the smoke detector, also run and update entries in your 72 Hour kits to be changed. On That way it will always be updated and ready for an emergency.
