Designer Jeans: The Denim Rollercoaster
The Paper Denim and Cloth mark was all the rage a few years ago. In the time slot between 2000 – 2003, Jean was the company made penetrated deep into the territory of high fashion denim under the creative direction of Scott Morrison. The company offered a special Japanese denim, hand-painted stylings as well as specialized rivets. The jeans were a smash success, even at more than $ 200 per pair. After Morrison left the company in 2004, everything changed. CEO Dick Gilbert's son Chris took over the creative rudder, and moved manufacturing operations from Los Angeles to Mexico and the Dominican Republic to cut costs. Paper Denim and Cloth's customers, many of whom revered the mark were critical of the change in management. Some complained that the finish had fallen since the operations had moved from the U.S. Revenue declined, and more significantly, brand image suffered. In the span of six years, prices for Jean fallen from a peak of $ 240 to less than $ 40 discount on some outlets.
Blue Jeans is a fickle business, new stars as fast as they rise. Perhaps nothing illustrates this more than the example of Jordache Jeans. Jordache was founded in 1969 in the form of a discount jeans outlet managed by three brothers, Joe, Ralph and Avi Naccache. Their business did well, but currently, they were only jeans made by other manufacturers, such as Gloria Vanderbilt and Calvin Klein wear. During the blackout of 1977, their shops looted and burned. But the brothers had insured their business wisely. In 1978, 120,000 insurance payment and gave them a their newly acquired capital in the production company Jean.
It was a case of perfect timing. The public had tired of the traditional brand of Levi Strauss jeans. The "designer" Pioneer Jean Calvin Klein, Gloria Vanderbilt, Jordache and it would fit more snuggly in the body. Naccache the brothers poured all their money in a risky – and daring – ad campaign. The TV networks initially rejected the sexy ads, but local television stations broadcast them, NY, and Jordache was a success. Jordache now had enough money for half advertisement blitz fuel. This – a little more tame than the first – was broadcast nationwide. Jordache quickly became a sensation in the early eighties, it was perhaps the best known of the designer jeans. The Jordache began to use their names to other companies licensed apparel, which generated up to 300 million euros per year for the company. But over the eighties, the name was of Jordache overexposed. His popularity dropped dramatically, as Jordache was associated with cheaper clothes, even to the point may be interpreted as "tasteless" by the same fashion elite that once made it popular.
In the nineties, the designer Jean "was largely lost its fashion status. Levi Strauss had recovered its standing as the classic blue jean. Perhaps in response to the tight jeans of the year 1980, the fit was loose again, in some extreme cases. This trend tends to taste for men, with few women interested in a loose aesthetic. As the year 2000 rolled in, Jerome Dahan and Michael Glasser saw a potential in the market again for a "designer" Jean. They brought in the famous designer Marc Jacobs for financial support and created seven For All Mankind, a new Blue Jean, who would have more of a body hugging fit (but not tight as the original Jordache) and would also provide a 'distressed denim' process where the denim fabric was thinner and slightly torn in places to have a softer feel. The jeans were a success, and continue to maintain solid market share, competing with similar "new designer" styles of spin-offs like Citizens of Humanity, True Religion, and Joe Jeans. Seven For All Mankind, also set in Los Angeles not only as the showbiz capital, but also the designer Jean capital of the country.
Seven For All Mankind, True Religion Jeans and Joe continue to enjoy a good sale, even in the setting of retail market in 2009. But if the past is any indication, hard time will test the ability of these Jean makers to maintain their fashionable status. Staying in fashion is a dark art. Time will tell which of the Jean manufacturers can keep the most magical.
