Chrissie Watts

Creation and casting

The creation of a second wife for Den Watts (Leslie Grantham), the show "Most sustainability "and" one of the most popular villains in soap history ", came 15 years after his first wife had left on the screen. Angie Watts (Anita Dobson) was an iconic figure in British television history, with its awkward marriage with anchoring EastEnders The most extraordinary success when it was launched in the mid-year 80. In an interview shortly after they first appeared on screen as Chrissie Watts, Tracy Ann Oberman noted how come on the show after Angie was a daunting prospect and a "a great act to follow".

Casting for the character was hectic, with Oberman describing the process as a "whirlwind" affair. The role of The second Mrs Watts was very popular with Oberman ultimately derived from high-profile stars such as Patsy Kensit, Cheryl Baker and Joanna Lumley for the part. In 2004 in a "Star Chat" interview in The People, Oberman commented on her casting: "I could not wish for a better part. I mean, the Watts family are a national institution. When I realized that I had auditioned for the role of Dirty Den's wife, my jaw just dropped. I never thought I get it. Amazing, boastful actresses such as Joanna Lumley and Patsy Kensit, were all considered, but Leslie Grantham and I had great chemistry on the road and I think he said. " I want her "Oberman was on vacation when they call said she was cast in the role and had to be on the set of next Tuesday received. All told the audition process had only taken two weeks, with only one Oberman start filming ten days after her first screen test. In fact, the schedule was so tight that Oberman was on set and taping scenes before a contract was even signed.

"I think there's a good chemistry between me and Leslie on the screen."

The arrival of Chrissie Watts was announced barely one month before she was set on the first face on the screen, and came at a time when EastEnders was huge media criticism sets and declining ratings. The rush of casting meant Oberman had little time to the sheer size of the part she had taken of process:. "My feet have even [...] have not touched the ground I have not had time to think about what this role is going to do to my life! I am very excited to be part of such a great show and have a I've been a fan for many years. "She admitted however, that for" something intimidated "by the high media profile and press interest around the show the moment. Indeed, joining EastEnders' proved to be something of a baptism of fire for Oberman, "as she was playing opposite Leslie Grantham, whose recent return the show was a highly publicized event. Twenty-four hours after the first episode went to Chrissie's a scandal Grantham air pressure on the tabloid newspapers. According to Oberman, the atmosphere on set the next day "was a bit tense," but, she added, "Watts to contract and we are getting along and working '. But Oberman was allegedly finding things difficult, having walked into a very complicated situation, "Tracy-Ann is really finding her feet on the show … she feels really left out because all the black votes Grantham exile and refuses to talk to him. Since most of her scenes with Grantham, it is really difficult for her. "Looking back on the incident, after they had left EastEnders, Oberman said, "I respect Leslie fronting it out, he came out of his dressing room and started to work Nobody mentioned the story of life in EastEnders, .. The machine never stops. "

The increasing importance of Chrissie in EastEnders meant Oberman, more than most, had to endure a grueling schedule work on a soap, taping scenes to twenty per day. Although they appeared in EastEnders for 18 months, that was the central role of Chrissie to the show and storylines Oberman felt she had done four years worth of acting, noting that at the time of her departure "Chrissie has packed in one year what most soap characters do in three. "All this came during a period of great uncertainty for the show, media criticism and negative publicity created immense pressure behind the scenes, large-scale culls cast and speculation in the press and on the set about who could be next. In an interview with the Sunday Mirror, Oberman described the atmosphere as a "vacuum", the cast of "just waiting to see what the next step may be a little tense, but it's exciting. I really do not know what will happen. However, the prominent Chrissie role in the show when it put forward meant that Oberman was the uncertainty over most of the show, a better deal and extending her contract for one year, with the head of the BBC's drama John Yorke said he was "big plans" for Chrissie.

Character Development

Personality

"You have to understand why it is what it is. Otherwise, you play a cartoon character. Behind every bitch is someone who truly does pain in her life. "

spicy Ann Oberman

Unlike Angie, the first wife Den's, Chrissie "has a strong will and fight for what she wants." However, as noted Oberman, "There's plenty of Angie with Chrissie to see a Den certain kind of strong woman like Angie in Chrissie is 15 years behind her feminism. "Explain in an interview with Radio 4:" I like to think of Chrissie as Angie, which the benefits … They [Den's] like a little more than Angie was "Oberman later extended". Chrissie, unlike Angie, will not be on the bottle as soon The road and play. She's proven she's ready to sit and wait for her revenge. She's a big, strong character. "Talking to the Daily Mirror shortly after appearing on the screen for the first time in April, Oberman said, "Chrissie is the kind of woman I would really like to be friends with … She's an Essex girl, who grew up in a family of brothers, so she knows how to work with men. She understands that what they say is not always what they mean. "In its official character profile, Chrissie is portrayed as someone that "happy mind games" and "often two steps ahead of her husband" is described as "the type of person your best friend. But if you cross her, she will get her own back in the end. "Her strong-willed personality has led reviewers to label the character as" toxic "," sinister " cunning "and" tough as nails "in" the great tradition of the landlady of the Queen Vic, the manipulation of others to make things go her way. It was characterized by executive producer Kate Harwood as a survivor, someone who "thinks on her feet," whatever the situation. Oberman stated that she was glad to "To play such a strong female character, which she described as not a bad person at heart but a willingness to stand up and fight in her corner. "

Chrissie's style was a prominent aspect of the character. Tracy Ann Oberman wanted an element of Sex and the City to bring to the character.

An important facet of personality Chrissie her wardrobe and style, with EastEnders costume designer Di Humphreys noting that "Chrissie clothes its strong pre-essential characters." According to Oberman production team was keen to emphasize this in the manner of her dress: "For Chrissie's wardrobe, we decided she is dressed and more coordinated, "which explains how the character's fashion sense was informed by its own observations of British expatriates, "When I heard that I was part of Chrissie I was on holiday in Spain, where she had lived, and I remember looking at all ex-pat women, and thinking how coordinated they are. Their hair is always perfect, their bags and shoes fit their gloves and scarves. "The show's makeup artist, Elizabeth Armistead, also discussed how Chrissie's "glamorous, polished look," informs her characterization and personality: "Chrissie is a confident person who rarely leave anything to chance, even in moments of despair. although her face reflects her anxiety, she never has a hair out of place. "The look was part of a desire to imagine the character as a "strong" and "powerful" figure, with an interviewer Chrissie described as "free flashy" and "Glam". According Humprehys This manifests itself in "Chrissie outfits [that] a mixture of designer and High Street … Chrissie's got a great sense of style. She makes custom look High Street Fashion "Oberman felt Chrissie fashion sensibilities to a crucial element of his character:". She is 15 years later with Angie Sex and The City cast ", referring to an American serial televisied remarkable fashion. even step foot on set Oberman eight hours spent shopping for Humphreys Chrissie's clothing at Selfridges where she "spent a fortune!" The character is highly stylized on-screen display earned the award for best Oberman dressed soap star in 2005, and reflected Chrissie's newfound role as the lascivious landlady "The Queen Vic. The media's character was widely regarded as the ultimate femme fatale of the show and resident "sex symbol", being described by John Dingwall of the Daily Record as Walford "black widow".

In an interview with the Sunday Mirror, Oberman revealed that she was attracted to the mesh of sexuality and humor in the personality of Chrissie, declaring, "What I beautiful find that they had sex and dry sarcasm. "Speaking to the official EastEnders website, she expanded on the importance of Chrissie sense of humor and wit to her" feisty " characterization: "What I like about Chrissie is doing a good, strong, funny female character … she really has a good sense of humor necessary to deal with Den. She is very good at jokes. Den, the one-liners, but Chrissie bats them back immediately. "Chrissie's barbed and biting comments were a striking feature of the character, even when cornered by Den's adopted daughter Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean) after an attempt to flee the country, she noted: "You really are your father, the daughter of Sharon. No shaking up both. "

Ms. Den Watts

Chrissie set of the show as the estranged wife of "one of the most iconic characters in soap history", was Den Watts, and deliberately presented as very different from The first Mrs Watts. "When EastEnders began in 1985 viewers had watched The cases of manipulation and gradually taking their toll on his wife, Angie, who was unable to compete In the games he played to take. Chrissie was intended to be a contrast to her predecessor, where Angie turned to alcohol, Chrissie's Den was more "equal" and could just as shrewd and calculating, with Oberman observing how "Angie was all knee-jerk reaction, but Chrissie is more a plotter and schemer – like Den Den's Compared two women, Oberman said: "Chrissie's much cooler than Angie .. Her motto:" Revenge is a dish best served cold. "She's tougher than Angie and they can hold together much better. Actually, "said Oberman, producers purposely wanted second marriage Den's take a different path in his first, that the relationship between Den and Angie had been compared with Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor, who between Den and Chrissie was modeled after Spencer Tracy and Katharine Hepburn. Like Den, Chrissie had a caustic tongue and their relationship was characterized by verbal fence in the manner of Hepburn and Tracy: "What's great is that she wrote The right," Oberman said, "It will be interesting to their little sparring match. "The attraction was designed to provide mutual, as opposed to unilateral Den marriage to Angie. Trying to win around the Chrissie give their marriage another try, Den said: "I know we have a good relationship, even if we tear apart pieces have, give as good as you and that's it kind of marriage I've always wanted. "Response to the complex nature of their relationship, Oberman observed

I think for Chrissie, which was set up in a family of all people, understand male psychology very well. She knows how men play and I think Den is the only man she ever met, they do not can effectively pin … There is a constant game of who the victor because they are very much equals.

The equality of their marriage was dramatic highlights towards the end of 2004, when Den, as a sign of faith in an attempt to woe her back sympathies, unveiled his plans for the Queen Victoria public home to recover by scamming the rival family Chrissie Mitchell: "If you ever needed proof that we are in this together or how bad I need you in my life, this is it. I was not going to this show to another soul, but I'm showing you because you are my wife, because you and me together. "

In an interview the official website of EastEnders, Oberman detailed the background dynamics and Chrissie The relationship that existed prior to their appearance on the show: "They were a real match for each other and ran a successful wine bar, the couple made a good team, but he was. will always be with other women. She had finally left him, but she had always ends back together. "The hunter's skirts and flirtatious nature was deliberately directed against Chrissie strong and forceful personality, and culminated on screen in his affair with Kate Mitchell (Jill Halfpenny). The plot was praised by the television editor Ru Green as one of the better storylines "during an otherwise weak year for the show, media attention when profiling Chrissie dramatic plans for revenge. Comments on the story height, a report in The Sun highlighted how "instead of collapsing into tears "as many female characters in EastEnders used to do, Chrissie" proves that hell has no fury like a woman scorned. "The climax Chrissie cut from her Kate Mitchell in retaliation for the affair, was a highlight for Oberman and an important milestone for its dramatic character: "cutting off Jill Halfpenny's hair in the salon … was really a great episode. I loved working with Jill and I think Chrissie put on the map. "

Chrissie links Den but was finally convinced to give their marriage another try. Oberman revealed in the Daily Mail she drew on a famous real-life model to the dichotomous behavior of a strong women take back her cheating spouse to reconcile: "I voted for Hillary based Chrissie: … An intelligent, attractive woman who was publicly humiliated People ask why she stays with that awful man many strong women are like that "She also saw the ebb and flow of the Den and Chrissie's marriage as a reflection of the mental video games that was so prominent in their characterizations: "I think there's a challenge, and I think she would want one who finally tamed him be." EQUAL, Chrissie's Den was intended to provide a challenge to his propensity for intellectual games, which all too smart of the top dog show in advance, Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden). Saw little threat in the test of proficiency his first wife, but as Chrissie to be "as sharp as they come." Indeed, extra-marital dalliance Den's been used by authors to present Mark and Chrissie's "strong-willed personality. As Zoe Slater (Michelle Ryan) The chastened for the care only about the reaction of Chrissie's need they learn of their affair, The fired back: "So you think you think I've treated you badly Well, you have no idea what will happen if she ever discovered the best thing you can do is.?! keep your mouth shut. "By the time Chrissie leave the square, Oberman noted dryly that she had" had more fights in EastEnders than most women have their lives. "

Witches of Walford

In November 2004 it was announced that Leslie Grantham not have his contract renewed and that Den Watts was leaving EastEnders in what was described by the mirror as an "explosive" and the final exit. The storyline was one of "the program's largest and most high-profile stories, dominating the whole year, and made the character of Chrissie Watts" core "of the show. The preparation for the 20th anniversary episode in February was a very high profile affair with Imogen Ridgway and Richard Godwin of the Evening Standard dryly observes that "unless you have lived Titan probably know that EastEnders was 20 years old and Dirty Den to leave Albert Square. "Events in show center around manipulating Chrissie and Sam Mitchell Zoe Slater In a plot of revenge against Den, where the three women called "witches of Walford" by the popular press in reference to Shakespeare's play, Macbeth. The prelude Den's death until further emphasized and exhibited manipulative character of Chrissie and conniving personality in its representation as a "strong" and "powerful" Fig. When she learns the secret that Zoe is pregnant by Den, she plays Zoe's insecurities and vulnerabilities, and "forcing" her into an abortion. The pregnancy represented a double blow for Chrissie and Den had always opposed having children with her, and like Kate Mitchell, Chrissie decide to teach Zoe a hard lesson about "messing with other people's spouses. "The possessive nature of his wife pointed out by Den, who warns Zoe that Chrissie" the tendency to blame the women for me astray. "

"You would be so proud of me darling. You know that? I'm really sort out those girls. I'm not leaving anything to chance. I'm starting to enjoy. And you know what the irony is: the only person who can appreciate how good I am doing you. "

The last confrontation between men and women played during the special issue marking the 20th anniversary show. That was general interest in the story that the production crew reportedly took to "fiercely guard" scripts "so that even the cast not sure how they would play out," "the producers of the show shoot multiple endings to provide the cast could not leak the plot." During the hour-long program, Sam and Chrissie Zoe leads to targeted Den, with 14.34 million people watching her the fatal blow to her husband after a violent struggle. Oberman "begged the producers to do to prove Chrissie they are not an SAP ", adding:" It was a real thrill for me. "In the aftermath of Den's death, Chrissie was always a" transformed " Figure and colder, as the character "play" and "spun" her "way out of every situation." She goes to Zoe tricking him into taking the blame for Den's murder, and constantly outmanoeuvres Sam in the latter's efforts to recover from the Vic. Oberman felt that this is a noticeable shift in the characterization Chrissie's, with the show's writers that "her in a dark route, as in a remarkable scene in which Chrissie The grave was about, and trusting him of her plans.

The storyline began its conclusion with the return of the Mitchell family to Sam, who had been framed for by Chrissie The help the murder, events were to culminate in Chrissie's 'explosive' departure from the show, the producers Oberman tell when she leaves later this years, it is one of the most explosive storylines ever. Like Den before her, Chrissie had little trouble outwitting the Mitchells, her clashes with Peggy (Barbara Windsor) Phil and Grant (Ross Kemp) part of the final confrontation between the Watts and Mitchell that, in the words of one presenter, "grip on the nation." The story height, resulting in Chrissie's leaving Walford, was such a big moment for the show by BBC bosses of the highly unusual step of keeping the 'nature of its departure "has a" complete mystery, even the soap on the [main] producers, with reports claiming that 'no fewer than four separate storylines [Are] to be filmed for her departure from EastEnders. " Comments at the moment so far Oberman said: "I think Chrissie deserves get away with murder. She was tough provoked. I would like to make it to Argentina … [And] a beach bar run by a young Latin lover by her side. "The enormous public attention to the figure by Chrissie was used by managers in the intensification of the ratings war with the BBC "with the departure Chrissie Watts as the main weapon in our arsenal away … snatch back viewers "of rival soap.

Victim or villain

Mark on Chrissie's departure from the show, BBC Three broadcast a special episode of EastEnders unveiled on September 22, 2005. Titled "Chrissie Watts: Victim or Villain?" delivery featured comments from Oberman, Grantham, Dean, Kim Medcalf, and Barbara Windsor and Chrissie profiling to explore the nuanced character of the character. "Many of the viewers, and myself, "Oberman later remarked," Chrissie really wanted to get away with it, especially because Den was a monster. But soap and film noir have much in common the bad girls should be punished. "Chrissie But critics considered a" three-dimensional soap bitch ", instead of a flat pantomime figure. Her feelings of guilt and remorse were represented side-by-side her desire to escape blame and manipulate others, and even led her on two separate occasions on the eve of self-confession (Both times stopped by Jake Moon (Joel Beckett) at the last minute). And despite the fact that her father murdered, Chrissie highly valued her friendship with Sharon, where at a given moment: "My friendship with you is the only good to come of my relationship with Den, and I mean that!" Oberman Chrissie characterized as "part Part villain victim ", said:" I think of her as a villain with a heart. "She felt that while" no excuse "for murder, Chrissie was driven for what they did: "She's not a cold blooded murderer, it was all done in a fit of pique" and that "these characters are made, not born." Chrissie was haunted by the fate of alcoholic first wife's Den, which she swore at the grave of Angie's to avoid. But despite her efforts, and indeed because of them, they failed because they came to recognize: "You know it's funny, when Den used to talk about Ange he uses to describe it as this poor sad cow. And I used to think "not like me, oh no, not like me". Who is that last laugh now, Ange? "

Reception

As the wife of Den Watts, one of the largest British soap figures, Chrissie was a high profile character, with the turns in her storylines regularly splashed across the tabloid newspapers. According to Steve Hendry of the Daily Mail (Glasgow), Oberman was an "overnight success" in the role of Chrissie, and successfully "excerised the iconic spirit of long deceased Queen Vic lush Angie Watts' are, in the words of reporter Katherine Hassell, "a national television heroine … after they arrived in Albert Square in 2004 as the wife of the resurrected Dirty Den. The character is tough and steely persona was widely cited by television critics. Imogen Ridgway Chrissie by The Evening Standard felt the "dominant female character" in the show, maintaining an increasingly threatened EastEnders tradition of independent, strong female figure to be: "For a soap opera that originally underpinned by dominant female characters, it seems strange that Chrissie Watts is apparently the only strong woman left Walford.

The storyline involving the death was one of the most prominent of the decade, generating intense media and public interest. Looking back on the period, Oberman noted the remarkable nature of the story:

At the time, you get so involved in the work that you do not think about it. However, I did not realize how much of a story had huge impact. When I think back on how Michelle, Kim [Medcalf] and I were on the cover of magazines week in and week out for about a month. The whole country had about it. That was a real moment for me. I took it in my stride a bit at the moment, but the National TV Awards and was nominated for Best Newcomer was very exciting. I was alone working there for a few weeks before the landlady of the Queen Vic!

The one-hour special 20th anniversary episode where Chrissie was slain Den watched by 14.34 million people are beaten on the night it aired, attracting "almost 60% of potential viewers, with a peak share of 57.8%. It was The highest rated episode of EastEnders that year, and has since been bested only by a showing on Christmas Day 2007 (that are different attract large audiences for all BBC One Programmes that year), and the 25th anniversary episode. However, the final figures for the broadcast, which factored into digital and recorded visits rose to over 17 million which the screening of one of the highest rated British soap opera since 2003. The episode received an enormous amount of media attention and was praised for showing "some of the tightest, funniest dialogue this soap have seen. "Oberman revealed that she could not stop laughing during the filming of the scenes, as Grantham's hair was stuck to the floor. "We have very expensive and poor Leslie was on his back for hours with fake blood around his head, the liquid and dried his hair was stuck to the floor when he got up. Tore his hair out! "

The aftermath dominated EastEnders in 2005 and has contributed to the fortunes of the show to revive it. According to former head of BBC Drama Serials, Mal Young, this was dependent on the character of Chrissie, who was responsible for "anchoring the success of the birthday story." A similar sentiment was expressed by Ian Hyland in the Sunday Mirror, who also criticized the plot felt convuluted EastEnders was to improve "especially because Chrissie's doing its best to rescue the effects of the dirty bomb plot The murder is now, "and described the character as well as launching a rescue act" in the show. However, Jim Shelley of the Daily Mirror was highly critical of Chrissie, called her "The Lady MacBeth ridiculous wannabe", and felt her departure was EastEnders for advancement ennabling come. In contrast, the TV editor of the Telegraph Chrissie proclaimed as "helping the revitalization of the show had its fortunes behind somewhat in the recent years.

Oberman has described her time at the show as "hectic". While Chrissie's tenure there was a constant shuffling behind the scenes, with three executive producers of the regime, with every new producer to bring a new writing team. Uncertainty came to manifest writing scripts, and character inconsistencies and plot holes work their way into production. A notable example was owned by Queen Victoria, Chrissie legally own half the pub after the legally signed over the deed before nenewed their vows in February. However, in November of that fact was forgotten, as represented by Chrissie forge Den signature to the ownership of the pub that Sharon was legally nullified. Problems with the script not escape Oberman, who criticized her character's storylines after they left the show, saying the writers 'must have been on crack ", adding how" suddenly no logical or emotional sense, but they said:' That The soap convention, dear, get used to. "She also considered some scenes irresponsible, saying:" I was scared when four years old told me: "I saw you kill Den." I do not agree with censorship, but there must be a level of responsibility. "

One of the effects of all uncertainty behind the scenes ultimate fate Chrissie, who remained largely unresolved. Oberman revealled in July 2009 that originally there were plans for a trial period, bad timing but eventually dropped the storyline. She remembered how the story "was put on hold and then there was a completely different team after that question. I know if they could not me, Michelle and Kim together, [they would not do]. And I was moved straight on to Doctor Who, too. No one was available until the following year, by which point Michelle was in Bionic Woman, I was pregnant and Kim was in Cabaret. "Because of this" I never felt I was finished and would like to have wrapped it up. "She went on her desire to return to a proper resolution to declare. "I would like to finish Chrissie's story because I love the character and I feel that she was left in limbo. To know what happened to her would be great. Even if they went back to say goodbye or wished to make peace with Sam. Or maybe we can see her in jail? "

However, Oberman has consistently confirmed that she loved playing Chrissie, and all its roles misses her the most. In 2009 an interview she commented on the significance of the sign and EastEnders viewers, saying: "I can not believe I still recognized as much as Chrissie. I still have many letters to get over her, too. I think they had as much of an effect as Janine (Charlie Brooks) did, which surprised me. Chrissie was not around for that long, but she was a wonderful character with an epic storyline. "

Oberman was nominated for several awards for her portrayal of Chrissie Watts. In 2004 Most Popular Newcomer at the National Television Awards, she has also received four nominations at the British Soap Awards, for Best Newcomer in 2004, Villain of the Year in 2005 and 2006, and Soap Bitch of the Year in 2006. In 2005 she was nominated for Best Actress and Best Female at the Inside Soap Awards.
