Intellivision: a game console Far ahead of its time
The Intellivision was a revolutionary game console developed and released by Mattel (the company probably best known for Barbie dolls, Hot Wheels and Matchbox cars) in 1979. It was the first 16-bit game console ever released and introduced many new concepts and technologies: innovative game controllers, superior graphics and sound, game downloads, home computer extensions, a voice synthesis device and a synthesizer keyboard, for example.
The CPU used in the Intellivision was a General Instruments CP1610, a general purpose microprocessor can support 16-bit addresses and 10-bit instructions. The U.S. release using a CPU clock of 894,886.25 Hz, while the European release on January 1 MHz clock is used, due to the different NTSC / PAL specs, which means that games were up 10% faster to the consoles on their European American counterparts!
The CP1610 recommended eight 16-bit registers – using a 16-bit CPU video game console in a very exceptional was indeed. It was 1.2 kb of RAM (including video memory, 512 bytes) and 7 kb ROM (which includes the Executive ROM "- a sort of mini-OS – and the" Graphic ROM which is often used sprites example included). The graphics performance was excellent for the late 1970s, making a 160 x 196 pixel screen with 16 colors using a palette (all colors can be used simultaneously), plus eight supported hardware sprite collision detection services, mirroring and stretching.
The game controllers were very different too, as they already have a "disc" (somewhat similar to the iPod click wheel) instead of a joystick and one of twelve numeric keys. The disc was capable of detecting direction and 16 games usually included with the "overlay cards that can be inserted in the controllers (in front of the numeric keypad – Switching games required adding a new cartridge and mirror the overlay maps).
In 1980, the Intellivision was available throughout the U.S. for U.S. $ 299, the was the first console to a serious threat to the dominance of Atari (Atari was the number one video game console producer then). Mattel sold 175,000 consoles in 1980, with 19 availalble games. After Mattel realized that the games market offered good returns, they launched their own software development group known as the "Blue Sky Rangers".
In 1981, Mattel launched a service that can download games via cable TV. In 1982, Mattel sold 2 million consoles, more and more companies develop software titles started for the Intellivision.
The "Keyboard Component" to transform the console into a home computer, the intention was for a MOS 6502 CPU (one is used by the C64 later), 64K RAM and a built-in cassette tape drive. But during the process of Developement many problems with the reliability and hardware had been too expensive. After repeated delays key component project was officially canceled in 1982. Apparently around 4000 Keyboard Components were sent to selected customers testing, they are extremely rare today.
If Mattel executives were aware of the keyboard Component problems for a long time, they had started a secondary project in mid 1981 that the component could be replaced in the event of a complete failure. It was released as the Entertainment Computer System (ECS), recommended a keyboard with a tape interface and included 2k of extra RAM. It lacked the originally planned 6502 CPU and 64K RAM extension, but it was cost effective and eventually functionalm is the Intellivison into a home computer.
Shortly after, Mattel introduced a 49-Key Music Synthesizer keyboard that could turn the Intellivision / ECS combo in a multi-voice synthesizer. Unfortunately, the ECS received very little marketing push further and further hardware and software developments for ECS were canceled.
Intellivision was The first game console to provide real-time human and robot voices provide while playing. IntelliVoice the module needed for this function, using an SP0256 Orator "voice chip jointly developed by Mattel and General Instrument. IntelliVoice But do not sell as well as expected, and only a few games support ever released.
In 1983, Mattel also introduced the Intellivision II (which only entered a new case) and the System Changer module (which may Atari 2600 games).
In 1983 and 1984 video game market crashed. The new house computer systems became more and more popular and interest in classic gaming consoles disappeared. There was now a large number of video game consoles available are further segmentation of the market. In 1983 Mattel Electronics posted a $ 300 million loss, in early 1984 the division was closed.
A liquidator bought all rights, hardware and software sales continued until most of the inventory was sold. Later, Mattel marketing executive Terry Valeski made INTV Corp., which sold the remaining stock through retail and mail order. She then introduced the INTV III, which was nothing but a Intellivison in a new case and further develop a few games. The console was 1991 aborted. More than 6 million Intellivision consoles were sold in 12 years, and a total of 125 games were available.
Keith Robinson, a former Mattel programmer, eventually bought the rights to software, founded Intellivision Productions and released Intellivison emulators including the classic Intellivision games available for MacOS, Windows and today's consoles.

I have an idea for a new toy. How do I find?
So, I have a few good ideas for a new kids' toys. I've been researching Taken to online trying to see if anything else is similar to my idea, but nothing is. I'm really excited about this idea (honestly, I wish it was already invented because I want one for myself). I have examined the patents do, but it takes a long time and much money. Does anybody have any idea how I could do this? I could not just contact a big toy company like Mattel or Hasbro and see if they can work with me on getting this thing invented?
Hi Lisa, This is a difficult question. Most major companies will not accept "ideas" that are not patented. However, you can file a provisional patent costs substantially less than a utility or design patent and makes your invention "patent pending" once submitted (may happen within a few weeks) for 12 months with a priority date of filing.
