Vietnamese Americans in American Education
Traditionally, ethnic minorities often face serious problems and Vietnamese Americans are not exception. Probably the most serious problems they faced and still face in education actually reflects all the other problems that ethnic U.S. group suffers.
Problems and difficulties facing Vietnamese Americans in the past
It must be said that ethnic minorities have traditionally been at a disadvantage position relative to the dominant ethnic groups. The U.S. is no exception, though many efforts were made to change the situation for a better society and American tolerant and make all ethnic groups truly equal opportunities. Nevertheless, the position of Vietnamese Americans was very difficult, especially in the past.
It should be noted that the mass immigration from Vietnam to the U.S. was characterized by a rather negative attitude towards Vietnamese come to the U.S. because of the war in Vietnam, who live many Americans did. At the same time, Vietnamese arriving in the U.S. were really strangers to the local community because they had different culture, language, traditions, mentality. Finally, they faced Vietnamese Americans with a very serious problem of racism, that was really disturbing. For example, in 1992, University of Miami pre-med Vietnamese-American student Luyen Phan Nguyen, 19, was chased and beaten to death outside a Coral Springs, Florida, the college party crowd of about 15 young white men with their fists, feet and beer bottles. Actually, he was slaughtered just because he was an offensive reference to his Vietnamese origin protested earlier at the party. What is more shocking is the fact that the party crowd ignored the murder.
The strategies used to improve the situation
Of course the situation could not remain unchanged. This is why certain steps were taken to improve it. It must be said that the development of re-education camps were supposed to contribute to the faster integration of the Vietnamese arrivals from Vietnam to the new life in the U.S.. However, this measure seems to be not very efficient because it only helped Vietnamese people feel the real life within the American community. Obviously, the closer integration of Vietnamese and local communities need.
At the same time the development of the strategy of ethnic tolerance is obviously very important and the general anti-segregation policy focused on the integration of representatives of various ethnic groups in the educational process. However, this strategy is not really satisfied, because in general, the representatives of ethnic minorities constitute the vast majority of schools, especially in the city.
At the same time, it is clear that the main strategies that really focused on the improving the situation of Vietnamese Americans, should focus on improving their socio-economic position. However, there is a sort of vicious circle that is very difficult to break. To be more precise, the better social position are obtained by taking the better education, while better education is often not accessible to the families of Vietnamese Americans because of their poverty. This is why it is necessary to develop educational and social programs that would help Vietnamese Americans to higher education that open new opportunities for them and a significant improvement in their lives receive.
Current issues related to Vietnamese Americans in education
Today The situation is clearly better than it used to be even a decade ago. There are virtually no serious language problems and Vietnamese-American children are practically the same position compared with other ethnic groups. Yet there are still serious problems that really matter.
It must be said that the socio-economic status of Vietnamese Americans not improved significantly and are often higher education is hardly accessible to this category of students. Secondly, many of the means of enforcing parental authority which were common in Vietnam are unacceptable in the U.S.. Thirdly, parents and children have different perspectives on which aspects of American culture are desirable. And, finally, the role reversal of parents and children that is typical of immigrant families in conflict with the cultural expectations of Vietnamese parents about their own role.
Conclusion
Thus, taking into account all the above, it is possible to conclude that the Vietnamese Americans face a number of problems in education. Nowadays, some of them have been solved, but there are still many problems they have to overcome, and in principle They are associated with low economic status of their families and their cultural background and differences between traditional Vietnamese and American cultures that provoke bicultural conflict Vietnamese Americans within families.
