Hot Wheels Matchbox immediate success and impact on
The Matchbox brand of cars dominated the cast toy car industry for decades. In fact they had no effective competitors during their reign as the only prominent cast toy car maker. That is, until Mattel introduced their line of Hot Wheels in 1968 and was an instant success. Matchbox American sales decreased from $ 28,000,000 to $ 6 million after the introduction of Hot Wheels. There are a number of reasons why Hot Wheels had such an immediate success.
The first and main reason for overnight success, the Hot Wheel wheels. Co-founder of Mattel, Elliot Handler, had created new wheels that are described as less friction. " These new wheels Hot Wheels cars allowed to race at speeds up to 200 miles per hour (for the size of the car). This 'hot' Mattel wheels allowed the line to quickly surpass all competitors, both by car and car sales to the sale. Children just enjoyed having a toy car that ran a lot faster down the plastic track.
Hot Wheels also had a big advantage to start. The company Lesney (Matchbox predecessor) started from scratch with a convicted building, limited resources, and grew out of an injection molding company slow season. Hot Wheels Mattel came from already well established. Mattel was the leading toy company in many categories and had a very successful line of toys as "Barbie" and "See N Say '. In fact, if Mattel Hot Wheels to enter, they did so with a $ 10 million advertising campaign. Hot Wheels also had an advantage in the production of their cars. They had their models to be built in places like China and the Far East, where labor costs were significantly less than in England, where Matchbox arise.
Another major factor that led to success in America Hot Wheels was the fact that an American company. Hot Wheels first success was limited to the United States and Matchbox sent sales plummeting in the U.S. as mentioned earlier. Matchbox was able to get a position in the cast toy car industry due of worldwide sales to maintain.
Hot Wheels were also very popular direct consequence of the models they chose to produce. Matchbox was mainly produced their cars year after the actual car or vehicle was produced. Hot Wheels mainly used the designs of the American made muscle cars and hot rods of the fifties and sixties. They also tend to modify the cars the way that many car enthusiasts in Southern California did, with the back jacked up and flames or other graphics painted on the body. These features of the Hot Wheels design helped succeed in America because children could race around the living room with the car they saw on the streets and their older siblings rode.
In 1969, were one year and half after introduced Hot Wheels, Matchbox himself came with faster wheels and more contemporary models. Matchbox and Hot Wheels subsequently remained neck and neck in the toy car in the world for many years. It was not until the year 1990 began the Hot Wheels and Matchbox pull it away from the clear market leader.
