How to Learn the Lingo on eBay
If you have problems sometimes understand when people talk about eBay? Do not worry, a part of the vocabulary is really obscure, and you can not are expected to understand it until someone tells you what it means. Here is a small list of some of the most useful lingo to know, but you do not have to remember – even the most common jargon is only relatively little used.
Words.
Bid: telling eBay system the maximum price you are willing to pay for an item.
Dutch: an auction where more than one of an item is available.
Feedback: positive or negative comments about other users on eBay.
Mint: in perfect state.
Non-paying bidder: a bidder who wins an auction, but not then go on to purchase the item.
PayPal: an electronic payment method accepted by most vendors.
Rare: used and abused on eBay, now entirely meaningless.
Reserve: the minimum price the seller will accept for the item.
Strident bid: a fake bid placed by a seller trying to drive from their auction price.
Snail Mail: the post, which is quite slow compared to email.
Sniping: bidding at the last second to win the item before someone else outbid you.
Abbreviations.
AUD: Australian Dollar. Currency.
BIN: Buy It Now. A fixed price auction.
BNWT: Brand New With Tags. An item that has never been used and still has its original tags.
BW: Black and white. Used for films, photos etc.
CONUS: Continental United States. Generally used by sellers who do not want things to Alaska or post Hawaii.
EUR: Euro. Currency.
FC: First Class. Type of postage.
GBP: Great British Pounds. Currency.
HTF: difficult to find. Not as abused as 'rare', but gets there.
NIB: New in box. Never opened, still in its original box.
NR: No Reserve. An item that the seller has a minimum.
OB: Original Box. One item that has its original box (but perhaps open).
PM: Priority Mail.
PP: Parcel Post.
SH: Shipping. The fees the buyer will pay for postage.
USD: United States Dollars. Currency.
VGC: Very good condition. Not mint, but close.
Chances are that your more specific jargon related to whatever you're selling to find, but it would be an impossible task for them all here be. If you can not figure out one of your knowledge of the subject, type the word into a search engine, followed by the word 'ebay'. The chances are that someone somewhere, will have seen fit to explain.
While it's good to others' jargon to understand, use, unless you really need (eg to prevent, if up no more room in the title of an item). Many people on eBay are not experienced buyers and you lose them when you write a load of gobbledegook all over your auction.
By now, you're well prepared for life on eBay, and you're probably ready to start with that first auction. The following e-mail, we will show you how to dive in and to the stroke.
