dropsy is contagious? help! plz hurry!?

omg my platy has severe edema, with nearly all of stabbing his fins up! I know I just cannot to do now, but it's a community tank! dropsy is contagious? I can not really tell if my other fish in my eyes and kissing gourami and Molly had obviously big eyes (I think ..) I also have honey gouramis and tetras. I just have to add dropsy medication anyways just to be safe? Is it curable at an early stage? and wuts the best medication for dropsy? PLZ HELP! And i dont have an extra tank! I have a divider, but do not think it really useful, unless the other fish are picking on him I googled it, and some sites say it is contagious, others say it isn't .. personal experiences of other fish keepers would really help. plz help! i really dont want to loose my gourami, it is with me nearly three years.

It is not contagious … it's not even a disease … The most common cause of dropsy (edema is simply an accumulation of fluid in the body cavity) is renal failure (which can be brought on by an infection, but again, is not contagious). You could try using 0.5 to 1 tablespoon of Epsom salt per liter to help the fish to force water from the body, but, like all other drugs, is no sure way to fix it. Treat the whole tank or let the fish die … you decide. Medication would be considerably more harmful to your fish (and rhizobial bacteria) than the Epsom salt would do.
