NASCAR Sprint Cup, Jimmie Johnson takes second win of the season
Once again, Jimmie Johnson, four-time champion of the NASCAR Sprint Cup, has found himself standing on top of the podium. Johnson took first at the Shelby American, the third race of the season for the top flight in NASCAR.
During the match, which took place at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway, Johnson gave a full demonstration of his talent and skills. This time it was not a matter of luck that was the first Johnson – unlike his last victory. This time it was merit alone that gave the driver the victory, strengthening its position as one of the best drivers in the series.
Kurt Busch maintained pole position in Las Vegas, followed by Jeff Gordon, Johnson, on the other hand, was relegated to the twentieth in the grid to leave.
Busch, could only keep themselves ahead of the competition for a corner, and Gordon quickly passed him to show at first.
Gordon did a incredible performance, making the race for 210 laps of the track 267.
Once in the second round, the race saw his first yellow flag after a crash by rookie Kevin Conway.
After the restart, at lap 5, Gordon took the lead again. He held this position until lap 46 when another yellow flag was raised after Mike Bliss hit the wall of protection. Gordon easily be surprised again when he first after leaving the pits.
The race was predicted that a high-speed event, but as often happens, the predictions proved to be incorrect. On a sunny afternoon with a completely clear sky, the brightness darkened the pilots' vision, and the drivers did not dare to speed up their cars to their maximum potential.
A few laps later, a third yellow flag is created, the indicator lights were not turned off, and NASCAR officials decided to compete for the problem remedy stop.
After his return to competition, Gordon finally lost the first place, over Greg Biffle. During the restart, Johnson was able to climb to different positions and to place in the group of the top ten riders marking the route.
Gordon and Biffl went head to head, and Gordon quickly first. Meanwhile, Johnson did a slow rise in the ranks, on lap 70, the driver managed to secure third place behind Matt Kenseth and Gordon to get his teammate.
These three drivers designed the course to round 88, when a new setback with the event raising fourth yellow flag stopped. On his way through the pits, Johnson had a problem to change with his band, and went up the track in sixth. At the same time, Kenseth moved into the head of the race for Edwards and Gordon.
On lap 93, a multiple car accident caused the fifth yellow flag. Gordon regained the lead after his return to the track. Twelve laps later the lights failed again, and stopped the race for the sixth time.
Back on track, Scott Speed took the first place, but was soon surpassed by Gordon, who apparently had grown to like the position. Johnson was third.
Johnson managed to move into the second and on lap 133, the two drivers of the Hendrick Motorsports team went head to head.
During the last neutralization, the # 48 Chevrolet driver changed all four tires of his car, while his teammate only changed two. Johnson returned to the circuit in the fourth, but managed to not only reach his teammate, but him to the finish in the first pass.
The podium was completed by Kevin Harvick in second and Jeff Gordon third.
The victory brings Johnson to fifth overall in the drivers championship, with a total of 443 points. Harvick is the first, leading with 506 points.
