A Guide to Fountain
What exactly is a fountain pen? The dictionaries will be made for a fountain pen is a pen with a nib that ink is supplied from an internal reservoir. The ink is pulled by a feed to the nib by a combination of gravity and capillary action. With the ink flows to the nib, the pen requires little or no pressure to write. Indeed a number of people suffering from arthritis could not use pens, but can use fountain pens.
However, if the many online forums and magazines dedicated to the fountain to read, it is a way of life, a collector's item, a best friend, a writing experience, I could go, but suffice to say that a hope people would not be without one either for the signing of important documents or writing their journal.
The Nib
Today, gold (Usually 18carat), preference is related to metal stakes, given the resistance to corrosion (water-based ink) and its flexibility. It is common though Gold nibs are tipped with harder wearing metal or alloy, usually platinum, rhodium or stainless steel.
NIB has a "breather hole in the sky exchange for ink in the ink reservoir to the flow of aid and the nib split along its entire length to avoid prolonged pressure of the user. Pens usually have a crack in the middle to transfer the ink to the tip by capillary action.
There are a bewildering array of shapes and sizes NIB, here are some below.
* = XXXF Needlepoint
* Xxf = Super Extra Fine
* EF / XF = Extra Fine
* F = fine
* OF = Oblique Fine
* SF = Soft Fine
* FM / MF = Medium Fine
* SFM = Soft Fine Medium
* FF = fine pen
* M = Medium
* OM = Medium Oblique
* SM = Soft Medium
* B = Wide
* DB = Oblique Broad
* BB = Double Broad
* = OBB Oblique Double Broad
* BBB = Triple Broad
* C = Coarse
* MS = Music
* PO = Submit
* FA = Falcon (flexible)
* WA = Wavily (stroke)
* SU = Signature (stub)
* Z = Zoom (Multi-angle)
That said, the most everyday pens come in the following sizes.
* Needle Point – an extremely fine point for precise grade work. Useful for architects and designers, but not for everyday use.
* Extra Fine – for fine line writing and requires a minimum pressure.
Pleasant – Produces a fine line and is ideal for general use ..
* Medium – most common and used for general use.
* Broad – Produces a bold, broad line.
* Extra wide – Produces a 'heavy' line, great for signatures fat because it has a large round tip.
* Extra Extra Large – As the name suggests, this gives a bold broad line.
If you purchase a pen, pens as well buy a can and usually do take longer than the user.
Mechanisms filling
Today, most pens or use an ink cartidge or a piston filler. Many pens will also use a "converter", which is a device that the same fitting On the one hand as a pattern, but has a reservoir and filling mechanism that the user to use cartridges or fill the tank of an ink bottle.
So that's it best?
Cartridges are certainly mess free and easy, but some manufacturers make pens that will only take their own brand cartridges, so make sure You know where you can buy and their cost.
Piston filling is more economical in the long term ink is sold in bottles is usually cheaper than cartridges. Addition there is an opportunity to try different shades and selection of inks to the person who really likes you. In addition, bottled ink is arguably kinder to the environment than plastic cartridges. Some advocates of the ink bottle on the basis of the state that extends the use of the pen as it cleans the old dry ink pen and solves every time new ink is drawn.
Ink
Inks can, surprisingly, are 'dry' or 'wet'. This has nothing to do with how quickly it dries on paper, but to do with how free flowing the ink. Some work better pens and nibs with ink and dry with some wet. A free-flowing nib with a 'wet' ink to puddle ink in the pen, especially if you write slowly.
Bottled ink comes in a variety of colors and shades, it's all a matter of finding of the person you want. Beware however that not all inks are permanent and most will over time, especially the water soluble, "washable" ink.
Finally
I hope the bewildering complexity, choice and combinations of pens, nibs, ink and inks mechanisms are not put you off. It's all about finding the right combination that suits you. It need not be the most exclusive or expensive, as long as it suits you.
