Handwriting Without Tears – Use the correct approach to the teaching of Left Handed Kids
In the last few years, the number of left handed persons has increased dramatically. This is partly because left handed children are not forced to use the right hand for writing, but are rather encouraged to use which way the child shows a preference on. Previously a left handed child was always corrected and encouraged to use the right hand.
A left-handed child can not be taught to write using the same principles that are used to a right-handed child to learn. The normal and the more regular methods of teaching are more suited for a right handed child. Often a right handed person is not even aware of the problems that a left-handed person has to deal with.
Here are some of the common problems through a left-handed child:
Push Vs Pull: When a right-handed child is writing he or she pulls the pen / pencil on paper. This works well because we write from left to right. Left-handed children need their pens / Pencil on the page pushing. This is very difficult. This also makes the tip of the pen / pencil deeper into the paper rather than seamless.
Stains: When a left-handed child is writing on the paper his or her hand after the pen / pencil. And thus it is easy to spot the letters they just wrote. This can lead to a big mess. The mess More can be when a person uses a good left-handed nib in cartridge or a fountain pen.
Watch what you write: Since we write from left to right (in the majority of languages), a right-handed person can watch what they write as they write. This is often difficult for a left-handed person and hence they can develop bad handwriting if not learned by the appropriate method and approach.
Here are some of the ways you approach a left-handed to help:
Mindset: First and foremost Never discourage a child from the left-handed use of the left hand to write.
Position Paper: Turn the paper 45 degrees clockwise (top right). On This way by moving the paper to the right (instead of the traditional approach of keeping the left) so the left handed child to write them to see if they writing. This gives them confidence, makes them right faster and teaches them handwriting skills.
Pencil Position: Left-handed children hold their pencils an inch and the half higher than right handed children. Encourage them to their wrist and hand holding in the writing line. If you find a lot of spots can then be a harder pencil as number 3 instead of a No. 2 pencil to use.
Preventing Hooks: One of the main problems of left-handed children is that they can not see what they write. To see what they write they tend to hook their hands above the writing line and write. This is a very difficult posture and cumbersome. Get them to stop hooking. A good position paper and pencil position will enable them to see what they write. So encourage proper paper position and good pencil position and discourage hooks.
Special Products: There are special pens and pencils specifically designed for left handed people. To use them and teach your children handwriting skills the right way.
