2009 Boston Marathon – At Last, American-born Runners Click It Up a notch against African winners

U.S. marketing nightmare that is the Boston Marathon is not going away, but at least two American-born athletes now have offered us a glimmer of hope that maybe sometime in the 21st century wins the race, that we possess.
Two world-class African athletes, one male and one female Ethiopian Kenyan again swept the titles at the 2009 Boston Marathon on Monday (4-20-09). Their names, Deriba Merga (Man) and Salina Kosgei, their ethnicity and do their popularity or marketability in America do not help, despite their world-class performances.
It is difficult, if not impossible, to the market potential of world class foreign athletes on American soil to reach. No matter how much they win or how many records they set. Nobody in America seems to care.
Propose a Nike ad that says: "Just Do It. Like Kebede, Cheruiyot, Asfaw, Kiogora and Cherigat." Not exactly household names recognized by millions of Americans. Now say, "Just Do It, like Bill Rodgers and Frank Shorter. "A world of difference, and that's the point.
Bill Rodgers and Frank Shorter literally jump-started the running boom in America in the early 1970s. Shorter won the marathon at the 1972 Munich Olympics and was runner-up the 1976 Montreal Olympics. Bill Rodgers won both the Boston Marathon and the New York Marathon four times each between 1975 and 1980. Joan Benoit Samuelson won the marathon at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics.
The marketability of Rodgers and Benoit runs fueled boom Americas and generated billions in revenues, while creating new roadside markets and products. Rodgers was born in Connecticut, Maine Benoit.
The demise of American distance runners who can win events signature the world is gruesome in recent years. You would not even know we took a distance Running Team at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. We had only one athlete, Shalane Flanagan, who thought she could win and came home with a Bronze Medal. America got just one out of 32 possible medals in running events from 800 meters to the marathon.
The rise of the African dominance in the Boston Marathon is nothing less than explosive, especially among men. Kenyans have won the Boston Marathon 16 times in the last 19 years, throw in two Ethiopian winners and Africans have won the Boston Marathon 18 times in the last 19 years. The other single, non-African winner in the last 19 years? He was South Korean.
If you do not think this is a sad mess for America, you know nothing about running or the history of running in America. It seems that the big tree in America is delayed by too much success and money, in other words, we have gone soft.
We dominated the Boston Marathon. Since its founding in 1897 to 1945, American-born runners won the race 34 of 49 times (69%). During that stretch, Clarence Demar won 7 times, while breaking the course record four times, and the Americans won 10 years straight from 1916 to 1925.
The African runners who came to America on the road races run in the last two decades, poverty-stricken and hungry. They returned home as heroes and "millionaires". They still appear hungry and show no signs of slowing, which means that American runners had better hit it up or bring any race to watch their back. There is a reason why every Husky in the Iditarod dogsled race to the lead dog in the pack.
And now, American-born runners Kara Goucher and Ryan Hall have finally started to believe they win the Boston Marathon. We know this because Goucher finished third among women in this year's 113th Boston Marathon, clocking 2:32.25, a little after 9 seconds the winner. If she could have found more 10 seconds during the 26 + miles, she would have won this year's Boston Marathon.
Goucher ran 5:09 miles in her 24th and had the race for half hour, but was just sipping the end of a great dream. It was only her second marathon. She has arrived, and now she must train harder and stronger finish to win in Boston. Goucher is coached by Alberto Salazar, who won the 1982 Boston Marathon in a course record 2:08.52. God bless Kara Goucher, we are not many winners in America recently.
Hall also finished third in his race. He clocked 2:09.40, almost one minute (58 seconds) behind the winner, but continues to improve and are certainly long enough to be worrisome to another runners.
Kenyan Robert Cheruiyot (say something close to Cherry-Ott), who won the race the last three years, finished fifth behind Hall, so there is some hope for the Americans.
Maybe three Boston victories and sacks filled with money taken Cheruiyot, then that would be considered poor in Kenya. A lot more Kenyans are having more money than Cheruiyot, but not much could match his fame and popularity.
In a footnote, 45-year-old Masters runner Colleen De Reuck finished 8th among the women. It was an incredible run for De Reuck. The bad news is that its world-class competitors were young enough to be her daughters, the good news is that they were not young enough to be her granddaughters. Greetings from the heart to Colleen De Reuck.
While things are looking in Boston in the American-born runners, we will not come back to the Americans to win both races. The last American man or woman, winning the Boston Marathon was Lisa Larsen Weidenbach in 1985, and it was made her debut in Boston. I believe it was in 1991 that the prize began. This year the winner was home with a check for 150,000 U.S. dollars.
The last Boston Marathon, which saw Americans to win both races was 1983, when Greg Meyer won in 2:09.00 and Joan Benoit (Sound familiar?) Won in 2:22.43, which not only one course, but a marathon world record. It was Benoit's second Boston victory after winning the first in 1979.
As they say in Africa's Sahara, of which 3.5 million square miles and covers ranks as the world's largest desert, it's a long time through the desert and it is a long time between rains.

6 months old American Eskimo fight very submissive new female puppy?
We have a 6 months old male American Eskimo who is very submissive, but is of play. We recently got a 3 months old female Pomeranian puppy is very hyper as well, but is very dominant. Everytime we let the new puppy will always go right on over to him and nip him. They will start playing, but eventually she ends up growling and aggressive. I am afraid that my male pup will hurt her when he was 4 times the size of her. They both have so much energy and it does seem they either give up or surrender. We have never let go on for longer than 15 minutes, because the female end punches in the eyes accidentally while playing and getting knocked all over. She is very dominant and does give and still go on male American Eskimo. What should we do?
Romp is normal behavior for puppies. Yes, they do growl and bite each other and pounce on each other. It's how they learn self-defense for adults as they are. If a dog tries to escape, and neither dog is injured, then let them yourself. In a real air battle you smell an odor characteristic of the stress of dogs. It is like nothing else. In a real dog fight, You can not break up. They have teeth locked together and you have to physically pull them apart (by the hind legs, never your hands to reach in a neck or head during a tackle scuffle, because you really hurt). Both puppies are good candidates for Puppy Kindergarten. There should be supervised puppy play sessions in class where the puppy of comparable size, age and disposition, allowed to interact. The instructor should easily tell the difference between play fighting and real fighting recognize and act accordingly. Puppy K is not only for the determination of the bickering between your dogs at home. This kind of socialization is crucial, so your dogs get along well with other dogs as adults. It's no fun walking a dog that lunges at other dogs when on walks, or which can not be left to the house of a friend if you are outside the city. Early socialization leads to well-adapted pets that are pleasant to live with.
