Going on an Eco-Friendly Seafood Diet
At a time when organic food and sustainable agriculture have become the latest buzz words and people start to care whether the chickens they buy are free range and cut beef from grass-fed cows, the idea of patronizing ocean-friendly fish begins to gain popularity. In Contrary to common knowledge, concern for the ocean is more than just about saving whales and dolphins. There are actually a number of fish species commonly available in your local supermarkets and fish suffering from overfishing, pollution and other environmental problems. The United Nations says 75 percent of the wild world of stocks been depleted or are recovering from depletion.
Seafood generally has two sources: open water and fish farms. To say that one is better than the other would be simple issue. A more accurate measurement of eco-friendliness is at the discretion of the methods of how a species was caught or landed. With trawl nets, such as open water fish has been criticized for its lack of selectivity and for causing damage to the seabed. Produce many of the trawl by-catch or species that are not meant to be caught. One estimate states that four to ten pounds of bycatch are swept for every pound of shrimp in the trawl method.
Farmed salmon is also rated low on eco-friendly scale. This species is raised in densely populated large netted pens that leak and chemical waste into the ocean. Salmon could also escape from their cages and are a threat to wild species, because it is a carnivore. In this case, conservationists say it's much better to consume wild-caught salmon.
To ensure that you consume are eco-friendly seafood, it is best to yourself aware of how your favorite fish are caught or farmed. There are a lot of environmental organizations providing easily digestible facts and summarized information on this. Some offer useful cheat sheets and cards, while others have downloadable data that can be stored on your PDAs and cell phones. To make it easier for consumers, types of seafood are grouped in eco-eco-bad or good and assessed on a scale of eco-friendliness.
It is also important for consumers to the right questions when buying fish at the fishmonger or order a seafood restaurant. You should ask if the fish in the wild caught or farmed, which region they come from, and what methods are used in catching or raising them. You can also request for specific seafood produced in eco-friendly conditions. These actions will send a message to your provider that your seafood, and hopefully others as well as consumers, concern about the ecological aspect of the products you buy and it would at least get them to think about providing more eco-friendly choices.
Some seafood products use eco-labels like the dolphin-tuna, meaning that the fish have been caught without harming dolphins in the process. Eco-labeling is still not universal and has a loose standards define what is organic, is an "organic" seal on your shrimp does not automatically mean that they were caught by means of eco-friendly and sustainable way. From now on, the eco-label from the Marine Stewardship Council for wild caught species has the greatest range and meets the UN standards for eco-labeling. There are several certifications for farmed fish, but you still over probe the labels to see if these so-called organic seafood are indeed eco-friendly.
Admittedly, making a choice to consume eco-friendly fish requires much effort. But if people become more aware of concepts such as sustainability and ecological balance, we can hopefully muster the political will to reform in the shellfish production industry.
