Olympic Skater

Top 10 things to look at the 2010 Winter Olympics
The 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada is just around the corner. For those not keeping of all winter sports since the last Olympics, here's a top ten list (in no particular order) of the potential highlights. Remember, it's not just the sports that the Olympics to make it worth watching!
- The opening ceremony
No matter who you are, or where the Olympic Games are located deep in your heart you know there's nothing more stirring than the opening ceremony. China summer extravaganza set the bar pretty high for Canada, but you can bet they go back bacon put their all in it.
- Women's hockey
In 1998, the debut of women's hockey at the Olympics. Since then not much excitement about the U.S.. But this year, Team USA is a leader in gold. Canada has dominated this season, but coach Mark Johnson has high expectations for his team. Can Olympic gold to do what it did for women's hockey women's soccer? It is doubtful there will be a "Brandy Chastain moment" with all that gear, but maybe the men out there it will have to take note.
- Biathlon
Enormously popular in Europe but largely ignored in the U.S., biathletes difficulty in funding and training for this year. When the sport was finally noticed by a wealthy contributor money was finally available for things to get going. The conspicuously in the U.S. will be Tim Burke, who won both silver and bronze medals at the World Championships in Ostersund. This is a great beginning to an underappreciated sport.
- Stephen Colbert
If Deutsche Bank went belly-up and their $ 300,000 pledge for the U.S. speed skating team went with her, Colbert stepped on the plate. It took less than one month for the "Colbert Nation" to replace the funds. There is certainly a lot of Colbert's biting satire about the matches. Like him or not, the comedian has the public and the pull to make things happen.
- Team USA a four-man bobsled
Steve Holcomb is the sending of the Night Train with his teammates Justin Olsen, Steve Mesler and Curt Tomasevicz with incredible results. Three gold medals in World Cup events this season puts them on top of their game. It is even more amazing when you consider Holcomb almost stopped because of eye problems bobsledding. Surgery in 2008 restored his vision and renewed his love for the sport.
- Skier / snowboarder antics
Although Bode Miller recently sprained his ankle, he'll probably still the games. And you can be sure that he and The other skier will be as crazy as ever. Add in the new addition to extreme sports inspired ski cross to the mix and you have a recipe for a speed-induced adrenaline madness that only the boys and girls who haunt the slopes can produce. If we could all be there for the after-party.
- Shani Davis and Apolo Ohno
On December 11, Davis broke his own world record for the 1500m by coming in at 1:41.04, besting his previous record of 1:41.80. In long track, Davis is hands-down the man to beat. Ohno, who at 27 is the eldest statesman of the short course, is competing in his third Olympics in 2010. He will push to Eric Heiden's record of seven Winter Olympics medals won in the beat. But he'd better watch out, Celski JR is a young man in the ranks, and one of the few who could give Ohno a run for its money.
- Kim Yu-Na
The South Korean figure skater is undeniable favorite for gold in 2010. Her signature triple-triple combination exhibits an intense sportsmanship with a grace that brings the audience to their feet. At Skate America in Lake Placid, NY she broke scoring record for short program, earning a 76.28. While the Olympics Playing the patriot will, in most of us, sometimes you just need to sit back and appreciate poetry in motion.
- Ice Dancing
The possibilities are wide open for ice dancing this year. While the U.S. couple Meryl Davis and Charlie White won gold at the Grand Prix Final is in no way be placed above the rest of the competitors. Two favored teams missed this season making it difficult to see who comes out on top in 2010. Everyone is sure making it their all in Vancouver. It will be exciting to watch the fierce competition between the couples.
- Skeleton
After a 54-year absence, the specimen back to the Olympic Winter Games in 2002 and included both men and women named as the new metal sled used in 1892 looked like a skeleton;. it is difficult to deny the tension caused by people sliding head first on a track 80 kilometers per hour. Look for the return of Noelle Pikus-Pace, the first American woman to win the World Cup in 2005. She is back from the taking the 2007-2008 season off to a child, but is shaping up to be a major threat in Vancouver.
Canada puts its best foot forward to make this a great Olympic Winter Games make. Take the time to a variety of sports to watch. You never know, you can see the latest curling fanatic, or think you really enjoy moguls than down. Bundle up, grab a hot toddy, and enjoy the best athletes in the world has to offer in winter sports.
